The ONLY World Cup thread (merged)

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Too late for Le Fraud, Spain have appointed Fernando Hierro.

USA, Canada and Mexico to host the 2026 WC.

FIFA......they've done it again

That's half the globe FFS
Utter fucking wankers FIFA with or without Sepp Blatter. Forget the logistics, the US and Mexico will now host the tournament 2 and 3 times respectively since it has been in England/UK.

Then we got Alex Morgan (who???!!) tweeting the World Cup is coming home!!!!

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/live/footba ... 06711df9bb

Is the World cup becoming something like the Eurovision Song Contest. Something we will never win or host ever.

There is now the possibility that England fans might never see a World Cup finals in our country in our lifetimes.

Looking at the quality of the current england squad, I think that hosting it might be your best chance of making the finals  :barscarf:
Fair enough mate, we are dogshit right now. But I would think having a tournament in the home countries possibly even including Ireland would capture the imagination a lot more, than across pretty much one continent. Could you imagine travelling from Canada down to Mexico.

Obviously I am only taking the piss - judging by the successes at underage level, england seem to have a conveyor belt of talent coming through that they havent had in my lifetime. I have long since argued that young english players need to go to other european leagues if the national team is to improve, and it seems with the likes of sancho and lookman already moving, there seems to finally be a realisation of how it will help them improve 8)

I would love to see the world cup finals held in the uk and if some games were held in Ireland too, then so much the better. The problem is that when these competitions are held over here, we automatically feel that we will get tickets even though the reality is that you would be as likely to get a ticket if you were living in china, nigeria, estonia or wherever

It's not as if Euro 1996 was a disaster when we held it so for the US and Mexico to get another crack at the WC since we last held it is in fact just the same old FIFA bullshit. Perhaps if we put a joint bid in with Australia we'd get it :banghead:

all I'm bothered about is whether the matches are a decent time to watch over here.
I seem to remember USA 1994 working quite well and so I don't mind them getting it again.

I also have nothing against the Russians hosting it this time around - one of the world's biggest countries who have never hosted it - perfect.

as for Qatar at Christmas 2020 :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Well, that is a reflex reaction if ever I heard one. I wouldn't be surprised if he is re-appointed by Friday, unless Del Bosque will step out of retirement.

He signed a new contract with spanish fa a month ago, and they only found out that he was going to madrid FIVE MINUTES before it was publicly announced ? How the fcuk is that a knee jerk reaction ? If spanish fa had any balls they would go after him and real madrid cos they were not even contacted despite him being under contract  If one spanish club did it to another spanish club there would be hell to pay
Thought his contract was up after the world cup didn't read he'd only just signed a new contract. I'll retract the knee jerk comment and congratulate the Spanish FA for dealing with him straight away. Can they sue real Madrid for tapping up lopetegui? Thought this was illegal under UEFA/ FIFA rules or does it only apply to players?

BBC World Cup pundits look top drawer. I like the addition of Cesc.
Vieira hasn't been seen as a pundit since being owned by Martin O'Neill in 2010.
Is Keane with ITV for the world cup or is he out walking the dog?

Fffs, I kid ye not the MLS Commissioner, Don Garber, on sky - " what an exciting day for the sport of SOCCER". Oh fuck off will you they can't even get the name of the game right - it was bollox last time they got it and it's bollox again this time. They should have made it a condition that they have to call it by the global name.....FOOTBALL.

He goes on "a monumental step to blah blah blah and to help grow the game around the world"......seriously! Fuck off you twat, football - real football, is already massive everywhere but your poxy country where you call your national sport of 'throw ball' football - you couldn't make it up. :banghead:

By the way, which foreign nation is taking the most supporters to Russia?

Poor call mate. Think they're in disarray following Lopetgui's sacking and Hierro has zero managerial experience. Shock group stage exit I reckon.

I refer you back to ITV's coverage of that famous night in scouseland in '89, when in the build up before the game they called the sport soccer - as I said here recently, I was absolutely amazed by that cos it was long before america became involved
