The anger should be directed at Premier League rather than Amazon. They could easily have a winner takes all bidding process so it would be just one subscription, but they are so greedy they want three companies (arguably 4 with BBC highlights) to stump up as much as they can. No other competetion has this and from what I know no other country (though Benfica have their own channel for home games to the exclusion of the others.

As it happens I have Amazon Prime anyway so it makes little odds. In some ways I hope this is a success and that Amazon along with Netflix blow Sky and BT out of the water next time around not only on Premier League but UEFA competitions as well.

I'm not sure if the PL are allowed to have a winner takes all deal any more and thought they were being pushed to open things up to other bidders? Amazon don't seem to have announced yet how much they paid but it's going to be peanuts in the scheme of things and the noises from Netflix about bidding turned out to be just that, noise. Sky pay about £3.5bn for their football rights and BT are now approaching the £1bn mark, I think, so it is going to take serious money from a third party to break up that scenario. The problem then is that these twats are just going to target smaller rights packages or specific competitions which just spreads the subscriptions.

Because of course, as Sky lose some of their matches they don't reduce the cost of their football package but of course the firms winning packages from them do start charging and I end up paying an extra tenner for BT (it's the principle not the tenner ). Amazon isn't going to charge for it's games.....yet but they will, so that will becomes another extra tenner for their games which I originally got from Sky. Amazon will then have to decide whether to raise it's subscription for everyone a couple of quid to pay for football (that will please non football lovers!) or whether to charge extra to those who opt in for the matches. Now Netflix will feel left out so will go and bid for something which will lead to another subscription.......and this is for the benefit of the consumer....fuck off pull the other one.....this is government looking after big business, they couldn't give a fuck about football, no fucker did until Sky turned up which is why I will always appreciate what Sky did. (I know there is the argument re the armchair experts who have never been to a match in their life......but fuck them.)

I thought our dear old government had put the squeeze on the Premier League to spread the wealth under the monopolies commission. None of the other sports you mention involve nearly as much cash as the PL does BUT it's possibly even worse than that if the source quoted below is correct -

As others have said, surely just a matter of time before every game is available.

The lack of monopoly is a double-edged sword. Whilst it avoids Sky charging whatever they want, they do still charge a bloody fortune and it just means shelling out for 3 or 4 subscriptions if they're split up.

Surely the monopoly issue can be managed by requiring those with rights to make their channels available on other subscriptions for a price which isn't hugely inflated from what they charge (i.e. Sky having to allow their football channels to be purchased via BT Sport). Pretty sure that has been litigated through the European Court of Justice continuously actually

I knew that it was some sort of anti-monopolys legislation, but I wasnt aware of the contrast to the coverage of other sports on tv. Football could, and probably should, fight this law on the basis that it is unfairly punishing the customer and that other sports are not being forced to impliment the legislation, but the reality is that probably nothing would change for football and it would just mean other sports have to fall into line as well. In recent years I have enjoyed non AFC matches more than I have enjoyed watching our own games (most of the time), but at the same time if I could have a season ticket to watch all AFC games on tv, then chances are that I would subscribe

I should have known I and the EU would be to blame!

I don't know the situation in every other European country and every other sport, but when I have been in France and Kuwait one provider covers the Premier League. And as far as I am aware there is no other European country where TV rights are split in this way. Portugal is an exception as Benfica only allow their home games on Benfica TV.

Anyway all the slicing and dicing makes little odds to me as I have Amazon Prime, get BT Sport chucked in the TV package on Virgin and only get Now TV day passes for Sky, so in the main I don't subscribe to anything I don't have anyway. Well except the 70 euro I pay for GAAGo. I can live without Sky for GAA with them missing most of the first half of games.
