Of course, Ireland isn't a shit team. I think there's a bit of a level there, in any world cup you will get weaker sides. Sometimes they excel as Ireland, South Korea and Nigeria have done in the past, sometimes they don't.
To have a pop at a team that qualified on merit is poor form IMO.
I suppose it depends on what you define as "on merit"

There are a lot of european teams that didnt qualify but are better than panama (yes even Ireland even though we are shit), but more places are being given out now to the weaker confederations (in return for votes) so more shit teams are going to qualify. It isnt jealousy or anything like that on my behalf, cos most Irish football fans will openly say that it is better for us that we are not there cos we are not good enough. If fifa were serious about quality over quantity/money, they would reduce the size of the finals and take back places for confederations which reduces the number of shit teams

Just to add to this, England Drew against Algeria and Costa RIca in recent World Cups. Both teams are probably in the same category as Panama. Just because we thumped them doesn't mean they aren't worthy of a world cup place.augie wrote: ↑Sun Jun 24, 2018 5:00 pmnut flush gooner wrote: ↑Sun Jun 24, 2018 2:18 pmIt's coming home it's coming home its coming........

Ireland has never put out a "World Class" side, average players have played out of their skin especially from memory in 1994 from memory when they beat Italy. There has also been a few other examples but don't start having a pop at lesser sides when Ireland fall exactly into that category.

For the record, before jack charlton became manager of Ireland we had a line-up looking something like this -
1. McDonagh
2. Chris Hughton (the scum)
3. Jim Beglin (victims)
4. Mark Lawrenson (the victims)
5. David O'Leary
6. Paul McGrath (manure)
7. Chippy Brady
8. Tony Galvin (the scum)
9. Frank Stapleton
10. Michael Robinson (some spanish club)
11. Kevin Sheedy (toffees)
That is ignoring what subs/players we had coming through like packie bonner (celtic), kevin moran (manure), ronnie whelan (victims), kevin o'callaghan (he who starred in escape to victory

Anyway, can I say again that I am having a pop at fifa and not at teams like panama who are shite but cant help that they are shite - I'm not gonna go all pc and talk them up when every bit of evidence out there is showing that they are shit

Re: The ONLY World Cup thread (merged)
You know I absolutely shit you not here but Ireland could have actually won Euro ‘88 with just a tiny bit of luck on their side.
Only 8 teams qualified for that tournament, no dross and the Irish played both finalists in the group (not to mention beating a serious Engerland side in the opening game) - the Dutch and USSR and were a match for both.
That team was packed full of division one players and it wasn’t just pashun and speeeeerit that made them a force either.
Anyway back to the WC - Columbia were an absolute joy to watch tonight. Fucking swarmed all over the Poles for the entire 90 minutes and strangled them to death.
High tempo, hard tackling, total commitment from the entire team with some serious attacking quality to boot. Of course Ospina brought serious banter to the occasion having the physio on three times which most be a record even for him.

Re: The ONLY World Cup thread (merged)
I know it all comes down to how teams perform in the later knockout stages but there are a few outside bets at the moment who are looking good and a few of the 'big' boys who dont look nearly as good as previous competitions, i wouldn't be surprised to see a few shock results in the round of 16 and quarters
Englands competition depends less on the result and more on the performance against Belgium, a well displined performance could see them setting themselves up nicely to go to the quarters and it surprises me to say that

Beieve me I am not a bit bitter - the thought of martin o'neill and his negative, uninspiring, pre-historic football being in the world cup sends a chill down my spine.
As rodders pointed out. our Irish team back in the 80s wasnt just full of players playing Division 1 football, but these lads were playing for the big clubs of the time (victims, toffees, manure, us and the c.unts from the swamp) - nowadays our team is made up mostly of championship players and back-up players at premiership clubs

Barring a collapse it seems that england are odds on to top their group - belgium are openly saying that they wont be playing their first 11 in the last group match, and a draw will do for england topping the group. Personally I think that would be foolish on their behalf - the winners of this group will probably be playing senegal or japan, and england would be either of these teams with their u-21 team. The runners-up of this group are likely to play columbia though and that wouldnt be as comfortable a game - I still think that they would beat columbia cos the columbian team strikers options are poor and they depend totally on rodriguez and quintero in midfield. After that game england will be in the quarters and god knows what can happen from there, although I think that they will be playing brazil there (had only a quick look at permations so I could be wrong)

Heard a bloke in work day yesterday that Ireland should have been in the World Cup ahead of Panama....Wrong on two counts Panama qualified through their group from their area and the word World is the biggest clue in this tournament , and Ireland had their chance and lost 1-5 at home to Denmark when the self appointed greatest fans in the world( who are now spouting this rubbish) walked out on them.
You are always going to get big wins in this tournament because of the nature of the competition and how the various teams get there.

Most Irish football "fans " can't see past the end of their noses when it comes to Oierland in the two major tournaments. It starts out with " there is no reason why Oierland can't do well in thus tournament "...and ends with " shuur we'll sing and dance and drink even in defeat because we are the best fans on the world "augie wrote: ↑Sun Jun 24, 2018 5:00 pmnut flush gooner wrote: ↑Sun Jun 24, 2018 2:18 pmIt's coming home it's coming home its coming........

For most Irish people it's not about the football it's about the party. Binge drinking and screaming the stupid " you'll never beat the Oirish" in a stadium or at a big screen in an over charging Dublin pub as the greedy publican counts the takings from your paid for patriotism.
I'm glad Ireland are not there, mainly for football reasons but also so I don't have to listen to every other person tell me about the game I love or the national team I passionately supported from 1971 to 1989 until the prick Big Jack publically and deliberately humiliated the greatest player ever born on this island.

Yes the Germans have now got back on track, surprised that Ozil is still there, Spain Portugal Brazil usual suspects looking good and would not be at all surprised if Messi United not, sneak through!...GoonerMuzz wrote: ↑Sun Jun 24, 2018 9:38 pmI know it all comes down to how teams perform in the later knockout stages but there are a few outside bets at the moment who are looking good and a few of the 'big' boys who dont look nearly as good as previous competitions, i wouldn't be surprised to see a few shock results in the round of 16 and quarters![]()
