I agree but this was vital to win, for confidence, belief and to keep the press and AKB's off Dicks back.

Cardiff will be tougher. hopefully Dicks HT team talk did sink in and we start the game as we played in the 2nd half this week.

we have to at least get a point. 1-0 would be ideal to show a little more progress.

Happy we won but to be honest this was never a game we should be measuring our forward momentum from, these games were gimme's last season under shit for brains and should be again this season :rubchin:

As RayC said next game away to Cardiff is where we get an idea of any improvement, we were woeful away last season even against the relegation fodder and bottom feeders so if the philosophy is going to work we must pick up points away this season

Good point Muzz...These games were Wenger's get out of jail card for a number of years and while welcome the win isn't a sign of a corner turned..I feel sorry for Emery, I think the scrutiny from the media after two games was over the top. Not just because of the opposition but more so because of the awful mess left behind by his predecessor. It's going to be a long road but I am more than hopeful that it will be worth it. On radio yesterday they said that when Arsenal were breaking for the third goal Sokratis was screaming at the central midfielders and gesturing at them to stay in position and not go gung ho ( like at Swansea a fee years ago when we turned a routine win into a dreadful loss)..Small things like that give hope that at least the culture is changing.

If Dick wants to dig us out of this hell hole the French cunnt left us in, he needs to do 2 very simple things - ditch the previous playing philosophy COMPLETELY and instil some defensive discipline from back to front. It seems to me there's some strange appetite inside the club to perpetuate le fraud's open attacking philosophy and an identify crisis is starting to emerge. We are caught between 2 playing philosophies and it's causing havoc. We get a corner around 90mins, instead of playing it short, we commit a criminal number of men forward, proceed to take a poor corner, and within the few seconds WH were clean through and should've scored. I know it's early days but this is outrageous and typical of the many brain dead moments we saw last season. The win helps build confidence but short term I'm not hopeful from what I've seen so far. Yes it's going to take some time to cure this malaise but it would take a lot longer if we don't focus on the basics. Obvious we are trying to run before we can walk.

oh, and Jack was anonymous apart from being robbed by Iwobi and Xhaka and a few fouls.
Good riddance. Glad we have the likes of Doozy and Torreira instead.

Deserved the win though I too am starting to get annoyed that Emery doesn't start Torreira. We looked so much better in the second half with him as the destroyer in midfield with Xhaka further forward. He really should be starting from next week.
Jack is surrounded by shite these days, I still think he has much more to offer Arsenal than the fraud Xhaka. Fuck knows how Arsenal managed to give him (Xhaka) a new enhanced contract after all the shite performances we have witnessed after the last two seasons.

Amazing how fickle some footy fans are ehh.
Xhaka is dogshit but fitness wise he's several levels ahead of Wilshere and that's important. Jack flatters to deceive and you can bet your money he'll be on the casualty list very soon.

But we also hae ramsey and xhaka - prefer both of them to wilshere ? I certainly wouldnt
I would prefer any player that is fit and Wilshere hasnt been fit for the last 5 years.Only Wenger the fool keep giving him contracts. He will be well and truly found out at West Ham.And he wanted £100k a week at Arsenal.Hope he likes championship football

No argument there, injuries definitely held Jack back. But he had enough quality to make the difference between a semi final and a final of a World Cup for England.

How much have you had to drink?
Where did England get found out in the Semi? Yeah midfield where we had no ball carrying midfielder to take the fight back to Croatia. One of Wilshere’s best games in an Arsenal shirt was vs Barca a few years back. The Spanish were raving about him that night, his injuries prevented him from hitting those levels again but last season he was as good as any other fit option to go to the World Cup. Just don’t get how people talk about what we missed when the solution was left at home.
Sorry Wilshere is a myth. The only game anyone talks about with Wilshere is that Barca game SEVEN years ago!! 8 goals and only 17 assists in 170 games is piss poor for the so called saviour of English football

Listening to the commentary on the radio for this game, it became clear that Mkihitaryan was the fulcrum of the team as his named was mentioned more than any other Arsenal player. It seems that it has to be either Ozil or Mhki because they are both playmakers. I still think we should go two up front.

Only watched highlights from .con - can’t say yet that I can notice too much difference to last season (I know it’s only 3 games in)

We still look awfully vulnerable to a counter attack, with our fullbacks pushed right upfield and no huge desire from the team as a whole to get back.

If we are to play out from the keeper it has to be Leno
If Cech is still the no 1  then don’t ask him to do something he cannot do.

I get that maybe axing too many seasoned team players too soon could be detrimental, but I had hoped Dick would be no nonsense.

As a positive, the team morale looked really good after scoring the equaliser :barscarf:

This probably one of the key problems throughout the later Wenger years, both full backs all the way up the pitch, insufficient cover in the midfield and the CBs far too slow against some of the fastest players in the league time and time again. From a coaching point of view i see absolutely no need for both FBs to be up on the edge of the box, we should have more than enough players for the opposite full back to be deep enough to support the CBs should a break happen.

This is the big thing i expect from Torriera, sitting back and covering the CBs, he doesnt seem the sort of player to push on unless he knows someone is available to cover this combined with one of the FBs dropping deep would cut out the number of times we get caught on the break with 8 players beyond the ball as it comes back to us.

Having watched the entire game I can tell you the radio guy lied. Mickey Tarragon was poor mostly. The game passed him by his touch was poor he lost possession too often too cheaply. He had only a handful of good touches and passes tbh. We were lucky with the goals. A big deflection for the first put the ball on a plate for Monreal and an OG and poor poor defending for Welwide's got us the win. We were poor and created little of quality. Wet Sham were just a lot shitter.

I'd agree. He did have one really tasty shot in the first half, but outside of that, there wasn't a lot of quality. We really can't play both him and Ozil at the same time. Iwobi tracked back (imagine saying that last year), but lacks quality to be a mainstay (at least for now).

West Ham had two clear cut chances that they blew at 1-1 that other teams will not miss.

That being said, there was some good defending from the front which produced a lot of turnovers. Had we the personnel, I think that we'd have walked this game.

Emery and Sven have their work cut out for them.

Mkhitaryan is a flat track bully. He’ll never be good enough to run the show against really good sides.

Personally I wouldn’t mind seeing us with wing backs. Would suit Bellerin (if anything does) and would allow us to play Ozil or Mkhitaryan along with two strikers if we want. We just can’t accommodate two strikers plus a luxury attacking midfielder against a decent side.

That said we barely have one decent CB never mind three.

Ok maybe not but it was a poor clearance and we capitalised on it well
