'The One Club Player' - Dead?

Post by RaM »

Well, over here, there has been a lot of debate recently in Rugby League circles as to whether or not there is such a thing as a 'one club player' anymore, with most players moving for more cash, or even worse, moving to the English League for more money than they will be paid here. Note that the English League is (or was) perceived here as the place where aging stars go to earn their last paycheck before retiring.

Many say that with the retirement of the last of the players who stuck to a single club for their careers throughout history, good or bad, the modern day player is one who has no sense of a dedication to a club and is more than easily bought for the right price.

Is this the same with this sport?
Is the 'one club man' dead?
What do you guys think?

With one or two exceptions the club man is a thing of the past. :(

With all the flack that was thrown at TH14 for leaving I think it should be noted that he was with us for eight years, a lifetime in the modern game.

If we look at Cesc, I have to say I'll be very pleasently surprised if he's still a Gunner in two years time...

Sad but true. :(

Kolo and Gilberto. Whilst we criticise him Freddie seems to want to stay.

Head home possibly but not to one of our rivals domestically or european and not until his best years are over.

Agree Freddies games will be limited but still think he will stay as he's...Arsenal through and through.

Well said to all about Freddie. 8)

He has been loyal and one of the reasons he's not quite the player he used to be is the injuries he picked up giving everything playing for us.

I know on a previous thread someone said cut him lose and save 70K a week but I think, f*ck it, we owe him a testimonial... 8)

Freddie has been a great player over the time he's spent with us, even if his last two seasons haven't been good.

how many'one club' men have there ever really been to be honest?

there might be people who are only associated with one club but they always had a few seasons somewhere else.

it always has and will be a rarity

stop romanticising!

Obviously, 99% of players will play for more than one club. Even if it's only for a couple of seasons at the end.

I think the author was refering to that select group that are associated with one club (through thick and thin) for the vast majority of their career.

Football has changed the last 10 years which I think is the main reason.

Some players are inspired by money but don't forget the clubs also ease players out if they can get the right money or need to sell before they can buy.
