Football began with Euro 96 (3/6)
I guess it is right that we should embrace the nouveau supporters who have attached themselves to football and our club since Euro '96. As you say they fill the grounds. However, they must adapt to us and not the other way round. Too many of them are part of the text - grass culture that seems to have emerged at the Grove. Tatquin and Giles by all means come and support the Arsenal but be aware that the bloke next to you might shout, swear , sing and stand. Don't complain about it because that's the football culture we know and love. It's our game , we got there first ! Enjoy and embrace it for what it is or return to Twickenham !

there's always a weird thread of adapted authenticity whne talking about class and football
somehow a working class fan is seen as more 'real'
I'm middle class and neither proud nor embarrased of it
an accident of birth
I'm a gooner who's born and bred islington
would be ridiculous for anyone to consider themselves more of a fan because of class background
if '96 got more people through the turnstiles then its 100% a good thing IMO
for me atmosphere issues are far more influenced by the failure to introduce safe standing

A mate of mine was an England member and he got us tickets for all the England games except the opener against the Swiss (too expensive, so we went to Turkey v Croatia at the City Ground). Buying tickets for 3 first round games guaranteed us tickets for the quarters
, semi
and final
. He offered to get tickets for a lot of people at the time, but there was no great interest!
But then Gazza scored that cracker against the sweaties, and SAS put Holland to the sword (we drove past the Dutch team coach on the M1 on the way back to MK
!!). And there was THAT song! So from a relatively slow start I agree that Euro 96 was indeed the tourament that relaunched football in England......
