Didn’t see the HT analysis so not sure if this was discussed or not but the most natural (and technically correct) thing for Mustafi to do is play the ball with his right foot back up the right hand channel where it came from. Worst case scenario for us is that it goes directly out for a throw or straight to a chav who’s 70 yards away form our goal. Either way the danger is cleared. The ball is coming towards him on his right hand side, at a perfect height for that scenario to play out. Simple, beginners level defending.

But does he do that? Does he fuck.

Instead he opts to let the ball run across his body and play the ball back to the keeper with his more favoured left foot. Now the problem with doing that is, if you’re as shit and technically inept as Mustaf-shit is, there’s a serious danger you’ll let the ball run too far past your body so that when you attempt to play it back you won’t get near enough purchase on it and end up leaving it horribly short of
pace.

And this of course is what happened. When you’re as shit and error prone a defender as Mustafi is, you need to just do everything as simply as possible. Don’t try and over complicate any situation. Give the simple pass every time, don’t try and be clever because 9 times out of 10 you’ll fuck up. Unfortunately this turd cannot be polished and he will continue to drop clangers whenever he plays (which hopefully is never again by the way).

Apart from Martinelli and Torreira we were total shit but fought hard for the draw.

That was a gutsy performance, one we haven't seen for a few years.
Martinelli's goal was brilliant once the ball bounced right for him you just knew he was gonna slot it home, and his pace, he's got that magic pace that just takes him away from players with the ball at his.
Xhaka seems to play better when his filling in in the back line, rather than his normal position. Last season did well at Lb and tonight he organised that defensive line as well as anyone we've had play there for 3-4 seasons. Even keown praised him.
Saka looked a bit suspect at first but he ain't a LB and thought he is better on the ball than he showed tonight. Leno had a competent game.
Really disappointed at the way we conceded the second goal, really soft goal.
Bellerin looked like he thought we could win this game, after he equalised which could explain his non-celebration. Memories of winterburn and sylvinio pulling out belters to get a result at chelski.
Got to praise Arteta for not making the rushed decision of the defensive substitution once Luiz saw red. I don't think Luiz had much choice but to bring Abraham down and really took one for the team, what about this double jeopardy rule? does it only apply to the keepers?
Mustafi was at fault for both goals but you could see he was trying his best, but he's just not good enough. Lacazette was dreadful. Ran around a lot but didn't create anything, didn't hold the play up and didn't use the ball well when he got it, and just kept whinging for a foul. If a swap for Lemar at Atletico is still on the cards I'd take it.
I don't get what Pepe was doing, he easily had the beating of their full back and yet never took him on once the full back got booked. Surely, the brief is just run at him at every opportunity once he's booked because he would've got a second yellow. Pepe didn't seem to understand the importance of the game.
It feels like a positive result given the circumstances but I think chelski were there for the taking, even with 10 men but we just didn't have the players on the pitch to take advantage of them.

Woahhh, slow down. Xhaka didn't do anything special. If you are comparing him last night with the usual level of shiteness he serves up then I agree, but MOM no way.

We concede way too many goals, the finger can easily be pointed at the likes of Mustafi and Luiz, but its also down to the CDMs to provide that defensive shield.

For me Martinelli was MOM, he had Chelski running scared and I didn't realise he was that quick. Yeah he got a bit of luck with Kante slipping but you cannot take away from the run and composed finish under severe pressure.

Apparently hes under contract until 2024 on a salary of £1.1m pa. 1/15th of what Ozil earns. The first thing we need to do this summer is improve his contract and make sure when he does leave for the likes of Barca or RM we get top dollar for him. He is that good. I am more excited at this prospect than I was with Anelka.

Really not sure what match a few of you lads were watching last night. Xhakatard was utter gash as usual in the middle. When he went into CB he wasn't a total disaster but that's about it tbh. He did a bit of pointing and shouting? He does that most marches. Wooppeedoo.

His positioning was poor most of the time, and when the chav got in behind us it was usually Xhakatard that was playing them onside. He reacted to everything - often a half second too late. The best defenders don't react to everything they anticipate most things. The fact he didn't give away another stupid penno or rifle the ball into his own net does not mean he played well. Let's not fucking lose the run of ourselves here lads ffs. He is gash. End of. Along with Mustafalaugh he has to be top of the clear out list.

MOTM for me was Torreira. Just fought non stop for everything and anticipated their attacks well, and broke up alot of those attacks. Was doing it almost singlehandedly long before the rest of them got "motivated" and fought back. He also distributed the ball simply and well, no Johnny clever bollocks shit like Mustafalaugh tried for their first goal.

A great fight back and a gutsy draw but we were shit mostly.

Saw a few mentions of Leno. Again he did the basics tbh. Nothing there last night that he shouldn't have stopped. The chav finishing was poor. He did his job. No more no less.

On the positive side, having gone 1-0 down with 10 men inside the first half hour you wouldn’t have given us a hope of getting something. We stayed in the game and took our two chances well. We had a decent spell in the second half and didn’t fold like a house of cards. Martinelli and Torreira carried on their good form. Xhaka did a decent job when he filled in at CB - I don’t know if he touched it when he was in midfield before that.

On the negative side, I know we are threadbare but any other solution is better than Mustafi. Why is he even thinking about playing that bouncing ball back to Leno from halfway with his weaker foot rather than smashing it down the channel? They were also very poor but missed a hatful of chances either putting wide from point blank or just repeatedly smashing great chances straight at Leno. Unbelievable that we could switch off for that short corner for their second. We scored with our only two shots in the game, one of which came from Kante’s slip and the other a great finish from a speculative area.

Great result considering where we were at 1-0 down and very pleasing to rob them of 2 points. However, let’s not pretend that it wasn’t Phenomenally lucky. Also that was 25 dreadful minutes of football at 0-0 for us, genuinely awful.

Hopefully it will give us some confidence and a bit more resilience but smugness at thieving a point aside the positive signs were still pretty weak for me. Not a huge criticism of Arteta by any stretch as we all know what he has inherited and the fundamental transformation needed, but just saying that I don’t think that we’ve turned any sort of corner or that yesterday was some kind of watershed moment.

No reason not to pick Rob Holding ahead of Mustafi. Mustafi has seniority, is a 35m signing and has played for Germany 20 times, so the easy option is to pick Mustafi rather than be brave and pick Holding. Arteta will not move this team forward is he doesn't treat players on performance alone.

Sometimes (understandably ) I get criticized on here for being too negative, but fcuk me some of you lot need to have a chat with yourselves - Martinelli is 5 months into his first season with us, and already some of you fcukers are going on about how "he wont be with us long" or "he'll be off to one of spains big clubs in the summer" FFS he is a kid just in the door and already ye have him leaving He seems happy and intelligent, and I guess would be well aware that at his age playing regularly for AFC would be better than irregular game time with one of spain's big clubs.

FFS lets just enjoy the type of performances and enthusiasm that he is bringing to the team right now - if it becomes a reality that there are offers on the table or efforts on his behalf looking to leave, THEN we can worry about that
