As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.
Unless you have some prior knowledge of a player you're always going to want to assess the full squad for yourself when you take up a new managerial position. Arteta stated when he arrived that everyone had a clean slate and the opportunity was there for all players to show him what they can do.
No manager walks into a club and automatically clears out the players that the fans think are shit. It just isn't done that way.
I'm not defending Arteta here but you have to bare in mind he's only been here for a year and had 3 transfer windows (in times of Covid). I'm fairly satisfied with the clearout to date and would imagine a few more will be gone in the summer.
You can't blame Arteta and Edu for contracts handed out by previous encumbants.
So a new manager shouldn't give any players a chance when he takes over ?
A manager SHOULD be able to come in and judge a player based on (a) ability and performances and (b) character. Even Stevie wonder could see from game footage that mustafi and kolasniac were simply not good enough. Ozil was a guy that had failed to deliver for years and a competent coach would recognise that his good days were in the rearview, and again there were serious concerns over his attitude.
Arteta came in with the same arrogance that le cock had and thought that he was gonna be the great manager that turned these players into superstars

arguments for and against, some are so shit (mustafi) they dont need a clean slate as everyone with an eye can see how awful they are.
the likes of ozil, then yes, huge talent but other issues, maybe a new manager can unlock him so thus worth a clean slate.
i do think augie and steveo (despite typicaly being good and fair judges on other things, apart from abou/leno!) are critical of arteta whatever happens, i dont like him, didnt as a player (maybe for the first 2 seasons he was ok, but after that he was a liability) and dont want him as manager and fully feel these last few results are papering over the cracks (as unais unbeaten run was despite us playing terribly), but i equally wont dump on him for every little reason! im happy to give him enough rope to hang himself, but with our owner and no fans in the ground to put pressure on i have no idea how bad things would need to get.

I stated my belief before emery was appointed that whoever the new manager was, had to come in and start from scratch and build a team around the younger players in the squad - we have not got the funds to go on a mad splash to sign enough quality players to make us challengers instantly, so the smart thing to do was built a team for 2 or 3 years down the line, and anyone who wasnt gonna be a part of the plans for that team, should have been moved on imo
The second highlighted part I agree 110% with you on
Fantastic window for January , the clear out continues well done Edu and Arteta, the clique have all gone and harmony back in the squad looking forward to summer to complete the clear out and get that quality midfielder and striker.

You can't throw the baby out with the bathwater though Augie. You start with a base and work your way (hopefully) to where you want to be. It will take time with no overnight fix
To reiterate the point, you can't get rid of players if nobody wants them and/or the player doesn't want to go.
You either pay up their contract and say goodbye or you loan them out and hopefully agree to some split on the wages.
To think there is some better way is delusional at best.
Actually I suppose there is a better way in theory if your owner is prepared to just write money off like Abramovic and the Qataris but even that falls to shit when you have your funds restricted like dear old Roman. See how Chelsea have steadily declined without his bottomless pockets to dip into.
There must be a lot of happy posters on this forum with this transfer window. AMN, Willock, Mustafi, Sokratis, Kolasinac and the leader of that pack, Ozil all gone.
Interesting to see Matt Smith go to Charlton too.
With Sami Khedira going to Hertha Berlin will it see the termination of the guendouzi loan, and his return to the club? It may explain the loaning out of willock and AMN, and move xhaka to LB cover, like he did a couple of seasons ago. Shame fat frank got the sack otherwise, i'd have made a cheeky bid for Alonso as back up for tierney, as clearly he didn't want him in the team.
Despite the lack of transfer fee in, clearing out a toxic group of players for no gain, other than wages, surely it is better for the health of the squad, if not for the coffers
A very good window, and the club will only move forward with the weighty anchors holding the ship back.

can blame them for Willian, Ceballos, Soares (even if hes better than the mangina we currently have at RB)
Totally irrelevant in this particular discussion.
not t all, iys about the managers judgement of ability and offering a clean slate, ceballos offered nothing last year yet was resigned likewise he and edu brought in those 2 via the agent link, yes arteta didnt hand out contracts to those being got rid of currnetly but equally he has replaced them with more duffers.

so our owner hasn't written down and accepted huge losses factoring in wages and fees on mustafi, ozil, mkhi, sokratis, kola et al?

The discussion is about getting rid of players, not bringing them in. That's a whole different topic.
