Old gits terrace legends

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

We regularly reminisce about the peanut man. I was shocked when they went from 30p to 40p a bag, but they must have been 1d once upon a time.

Rip Roaring Reds was my North Bank era mid 80's, wonder if he was earlier than that?

Dr Khan wrote:Have been browsing the forum for a while but felt compelled to write after reading this post...so many memories! Here's a few of my own...

Got taken to the Home Of Football aged 7 by my Grandad in December 1980 (a 2-1 win over Man U) and we sat in the West Stand Lower for £3 each.

Started going regularly from mid 80's - seem to remember it being £1.50 with Junior Gunners card...and as was mentioned, sneaking onto the North Bank from the family enclosure.

Anyone remember the bloke who used to shout 'Come On You Rip Roaring Reds!!!' at regular intervals at which point the entire North Bank would reply 'Shut Up!'..think he was called Ginger and used to wear a baseball cap. He also had an alternative 'Come On You ???? Gunners!!' but i could never quite make that one out.

Also the 'get your peanuts here' bloke, could never forget him...regular crowds of nearly 60,000 squeezed into Highbury (for the big games) before the Taylor report...and of course the top side/middle chants.

I remember an away trip to Millwall (the old Den) which was the first & only time i went there, one of the scariest experiences of my life, absolutely terrifying...and Rocky swallowed his tongue and Millwall wouldnt kick the ball out for ages...and i think we won 2-1 with a Martin Hayes winner off his knee...

Also Millwall at home (a cup game i think) when it was kicking off all over with helicopters circling overhead and all the Millwall jumping into the family enclosure, beating people up indiscriminately...

And a riotous away game at Norwich when i swear we came from behind to score 4 goals in about 10 minutes and win 4-2...

My memories of these days are slightly hazy so i may need to be corrected on some of the above points..

Sadly i only get to see the boys in action 2 or 3 times a season now, despite still living in the area (just across the border in N17!!!) I have been pretty much priced out of going on a regular basis...either way still a Gooner Til I Die!!!

Millwall away was always a pleasure was'nt it  Was at the one you mentioned and the others we had there around that time. On my first visit there I went on me own and decided to walk it from the Elephant and Castle along the Old Kent Rd, had a pub crawl along the way and being alone nobody noticed me until I made the mistake of following about 50 Arsenal getting a police escort to the ground, loads of Millwall piled out of a pub and glasses and bottles rained down on us, even the old bill legged it and I was quite glad when I made it to the away entrance unscathed  Not sure whether that was the scariest place I ever went as West Ham away in the mid 70s was'nt a lot of fun either

gus ceasar is a legend wrote:For those of you who could not read MK Gould's tiny ashamed ramblings here it is blown up...........is that a bad choice of phrase when it comes to space shuttles?

PS Yes I do remember the Space Shuttle on the back of the jumbo jet.....but no-one ever believes me so I tend not to talk about it !!! It was actually in the news a couple of weeks back as its the xxxth anniversary! And Bruce Grove is a station near WHL. The school was called Brays Grove.....

Thanks Gus for the confirmation on the shuttle, I think MK is trying to wind us up by not going to Harlow. He mentioned Tom I think.

They were formed as recently as 1988 as part of a merger between Waterschei Thor and........... Winterslag (see earlier in this thread)!!
Wondered what had happened to Winterslag. Belgian football has also been a bit of an unknown quantity apart from anderlecht, Bruges and perhaps Liege.

i was just thinking that this thread has loads of good stories from the old guys about our glorious past and that it would be a shame to let it fade into obscurity. what does everyone think of making it a sticky?

I can remember the space shuttle, whilst on the back of a 747, landing at Stansted when I was a youngster. My dad drove us along the old A120 so we would see it land. We stopped along a country lane that runs behind the airport (no longer there since the expansion and modernisation). I remember it well.

Johnny Hoy

Post by mickey31 »

Johnny Hoy was one of the best known characters o the North Bank during the late 60's and early 70's when it first became famous. He lived in Avenall Road and his Mum was landlady to John Radford, Sammy Nelson & Tommy Baldwin. I lived in Elwood St near the Gunners Pub and Pat Rice lived around the corner in Gillespie Road. We all would meet in the Gunners pub which was our local. One of our other mates at the time was Charlie George who lived up near Holloway Prison.
John is still alive and lives in near Newcastle & Tenerife. He's got a son & a daughter. His daughter appeared many times as a main character in Byker Grove.
He stll goes to some Arsenal games and the we were at Anfield for the Mickey Thomas's last minute game. Our worst moment was going to the Leeds game in the 60's when only around 4,700 people turned up. The last time I saw him was in Paris for the Champions League Final.
We renamed the North Bank ourselves which used to be called the Laundry End. We stole the name from West Ham who had a North Bank first. Ours eventually became more famous and the club changed the signs outside.
Johnny & Me played football for Arsenal Supporters Club in the Supporters Club League which was disbanded as there was too much trouble during and after the games. Other teams were Spurs, Man U, Glasgow Rangers (London Based), West Ham and others. We won the league and cup double in the late 60's.
A reunion fororiginal North Bankers is planned for May next year.

Thanks for that fella, made for some interesting reading. I read on another site that the rumour that JH was dead was a false one. Good to hear he's still alive and going strong. Not old enough to remember the times you're talking about, I first stood on the north bank in late 71 but I love hearing stories about the old days. Cheers mate
