Imagine finishing outside the top 7 for the THIRD consecutive season

Huge congratulations to Arteta for managing to finish outside the top 7 even TWO seasons in a row - the first time since 75/76 & 74/75

I was a very little lad back then and didn't go to my first game till 77/78, so I'll let the oldies comment but generally speaking people talk about that Arsenal side as the worst in living memory

Roll forward 45 years or so and we're heading in the right direction! Genius

I am getting a bit fed up with people saying that we MUST get 4th place this season or else! :D

Can I ask - where were you when this thread was created last August?
As far as I can see only 1 person on here said that we could finish 4th, and that is the only person entitled to moan if that position is not reached come the end of the season.

I predicted 5th which I have always thought the most likely, because we have a good up and coming team but have always felt Spurs/ Man United had too much depth of squad for us to compete this season.

Yes I will be disappointed with 5th, but I will see it as an improvement and take it from there.
As long as all the young talent remains this summer and a striker is bought then I will accept that.

Hang on, Rob. Saying we must get fourth and saying we can get fourth are two very different things. I didn't believe at the start of the season we could get fourth. I think I had us anywhere from 6th to 10th. But the position we were in a couple of games ago, before the interlull, with games in hand, our nearest competitors in free fall, and with Martinez-Lite then stripping the squad to the bare minimum, the least he should deliver is fourth and if not then he has failed, he has got it wrong.

If he gets fourth then I'd back him for another season or two to see who he can bring in and if he can put together a title challenge. Not necessarily win the title but at least be in with a shout in May, rather than out of it in January or February. If he does not get fourth from the position we were in before the interlull and this latest run of games, then he has failed and has done no better than Emery - but having spent alot more money. And at that point I want him out.

I won’t be moaning about it, but be a little disappointed. Two completely different things!

Ok so a few weeks ago you must have been delighted with Arteta because he was exceeding all your expectations.
For me he is doing exactly what I thought he would at the start of the season.
Getting quite frustrated really - I haven’t been able to get excited or angry about anything this season!

Will the young players stay if we dont get top 4? Klopp is a big fan of Martinelli Pep loves Saka are those two going to turn down a move to massive clubs like them to play for Arteta?. Dont think so. We have seen it before with our best players leaving because we dont compete with the big teams

:coffeespit: !!! WTF Lefty!? Easy son we're all Gooners on here.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

How can I put this? :rubchin:

Okay: When Arteta was first made Coach (& then Manager) I thought "But he hasn't managed anyone else yet and we're a Top Club!"

But I thought well okay maybe he will surprise me (and everyone else!) which is why I started the thread, simply because I wanted to know what y'all thought (Hence the Poll)

I have been one of his biggest critics - even lowering myself to calling him CaptainBlack ( copyright Me! :) ) as well as Farteta etc

But always I Truly Wanted him to succeed, simply because if He Succeeds - Means Arsenal My Team SUCCEED.

And over the past 3 months I began seeing signs of improvement, to see 'signs' of a recognisable Style and System - and thought maybe there is a process that just might MIGHT work.

I was anything but happy with the not signing of anyone in January - But was glad to see the off-loading of some of the Deadwood.

And though our 1st squad IS Very Thin - As a unit - the team have been playing really well (despite losses to the scouseFilth and $hitty)...it looked like we were beginning to show signs of Consistency, which for me is one of the most difficult things for any team to maintain.

Up till this weeks game against palarseholes (Nice one FG!) I though we had put the days of Playing like Utter Shyte behind us, but alas! It has reared it's ugly and Depressing head again...Also the lack of signings in January - which was one hell of a gamble by Arteta & Edu - particular with the Ousting of Auba from the ranks....Sadly with the injury to Tierney (Not Arteta's fault) and now Partey, it looks like that gamble has blown up in their faces...

So from being in pole position for 4th we now find ourselves not quite drowning but nor are we waving :?

All I want Is For Arsenal to Be a Success (Again) and if, IF Arteta can pull that off! Then I'll back him 100%... But at the moment it is very much in the balance; perhaps now looking even more of an Uphill struggle than it appeared before losing to Palarsoles.. so if he does get us 4th .. The I consider it a good season, But, if we only get 5th / 6th.. I'm Arteta Out! (again). :? :|

As Tony Soprano use to say with a resigned shrug of his shoulders "What Ya Gonna Do Huh?"

I have reluctantly put top 6.
It is hard to see which of the top 4 will finish out of those places next season, but I am confident that we will finish 5th.

No European football will help along with a fairly settled squad.
Certainly we were a better team than our finishing position suggested last season - 47 points from the last 24 matches is clear top 4 form. Saka is now one of the best young players in the world and White is a good addition to the defence.

I just don’t understand how some posters on here are suggesting a bottom half finish - no facts at all to back that up.
For starters with a crowd back our home form should improve. that was what ultimately cost us a top 4 finish last season.
Its easy to predict - it's called continual decline

Remember 10 years ago it was deemed impossible to finish outside the top 4

3 years ago impossible to finish outside the the top 6

Last 2 seasons we've scraped 8th

Teams below catching up - more ambitious owners, better managers.

It really is that simple. Leeds, Villa, Everton, Wolves all more than capable
Is that the same continual decline which saw us get 5 more points last season than the season before ? :rubchin:
For all those wanting Arteta out - i think we can safely say that he has stopped the continual decline - whether he has improved us enough to get top 4 is still unknown, but generally he has had a good season. I am still unsure whether he is good enough long term, but I dont trust anyone at the club to appoint anyone better, so for now I think he should stay regardless of whether we finish 4th, 5th or 6th.

It is interesting to listen and read people harking back to the halcyon days of the not a trophy Wenger period.
We all felt that he had gone stale but he did seem to have the knack of qualifying but we all knew that following his reign was going to take a long time to get over the change and the gradual demise that was taking place.
The club has been run in the boardroom like a basket case , highly paid people have conducted their power struggles to the detriment of the teams performance , knee jerk purchases , over inflated contracts and an overloading of basic squad players . They came , failed and left , some on loan and still need to be shipped out.
Kicking out The Edu ? Arteta axis will now just be a continuation of the chaos and the players that we want to form our basis Saka , ESR ,Martinelli , Odegaard and Ramsdale would suddenly be unsettled as they have definitely bought into Arteta's system.
We all said it would take time to turn things around and we just might be halfway through that turn , we can change and go back to square one or be patient and see how things progress.
