Why Arsenal should not sell Adebayor (3/7)

usual thread starter… fair point about stability, but in fact, Arsenal need to improve – albeit slightly – on last season to win something. Surely Adebayor isn’t going to score more than 30 goals. I say if the price is right, bite the bullet. Do you think he developed the kind of understanding with his team-mates that a newcomer would take a long time to develop? It looked to me that most of his game is based on pace and power, although he did make the occasional run into space to good effect. Some of the misses haunt me though. I think we’d do better with someone more clinical and that if we can get £35m for Ade, then take it.

selling adebayor
if he goes i honestly believe the only viable option is santa cruz. we wont go for etoo as a swap, gomez was terrible in euro 2008, podolski overrated and villa will not be joining. when all the smoke started to circulate a few weeks ago regarding a move away i was all for fighting tooth and nail to keep him. he then however decided to open that big stupid gob of his last week to illustrate quite how stupid he is - one minute he was staying and i was texting my mates to confirm the news, an hour later he was talking about how big teams wanted adebayor (talking about himself in the 3rd person as well, not good). to compound his idiocy he then gives a world exclusive in the news of the world comparing himself to henry. the dust may still settle on this but i for one will be left with a bitter taste in my mouth if i find myself celebrating one of his goals for arsenal next season.
I've been fighting Ade's corner for a while, and like the author, I have been talking (or typing) till I'm blue in the face about stability.
However, there comes a point where you have to wonder if he's worth it? whether he now stays or goes, he's lost a lot of integrity and the fans will never warm to him like before..and it's always been a frosty relationship anyway.
You watch Torres and Villa, and it leaves you pining for a forward with more quality than Adebayor can offer us...I'd still be happy if he stayed, but like Augie has said on many, many occasions....if we can sell him, and effectively upgrade to a player like David Villa, then surely it's worth doing.
However, If we can't upgrade, then we must keep hold of him...like him, or not, he's still a great source of goals, and he deserves a lot of credit for effectively leading the line by himself for much of the season.

I agree 100% with Donaldo. I think it would be one of the biggest mistakes in Arsenal's history if we kept Adebayor after his recent quotes. The possibility of getting anything over £20 million for someone of his ability is surely too good to turn down. I would be absolutely devastated if he stayed as I think he is going to turn out to be a one season wonder and I would be surprised if he scored as many as half the goals he scored last season.

Admittedly the quotes reportedly coming from Adebayor leave a bitter taste in the mouth and my impulse is to say get rid of him. But when I put that to one side I can't help thinking that it would leave a big void that would be difficult to fill.
There is alot more to Adebayor than goals. His physical presence gives us a much needed different dimension. There are more clinical players around. Villa would take more chances, but would he have the strength and power to get in as many scoring positions as Adebayor? Ade aside, we are very light weight; RVP, Eduardo, Walcott, Rosicky, Hleb, Cesc, Vela, Nasri (???). I genuinely believe that taking Adebayor out of the team would take something away from these other players as they rely on him to spearhead the attack and create space.
I agree we need to buy a more clinical striker, but to play alongside Adebayor IMO. I'm a huge fan of van Persie, but can we rely on him to stay fit for the full season?
Given his stupid comments, if we could find a player with Adebayors strengths but with a better attitude, I'd gladly show Adebayor the door. But Drogba aside (who we won't get) I can't see that that player is out there?
I can understand all Gooners being completely jacked off with him and wanting him out. I just feel that on the pitch we could look back in a few months time and regret the decision.

What we need to do is sound out David Villa about a possible move and see what the pricetag is. If we can get him for a similar amount then lets agree to let Ade go. It really is that simple. Nobody is making a move on Villa yet and I know that our enquiry could start a bidding war but surely if we can be as discreet as we have been in the past with other transfers then surely there is a chance. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Arsenal appear to be in a win-win position re Ade now.
If we sell for £30 million that is seriously good business. Whereas if he stays we get to keep an established player we know is going to frighten opponents on a relatively (I say relatively) small pay-packet.
If he stays and scores another 30 goals we could be on for £40m next close season. Who knows?
Like someone said on one of todays's blogs: Wenger and Friar don't appear to be missing Dein's negotiation skills all that much really.
