first of all DB I know how hard it is to mod a forum you are always stuck between a rock and a hard place
I do think you have been a bit harsh on BP here (unless there were pm's that we've not seen ) I think he meant as banter
a search for tarmac on here will finding many occasions (latest last year ) where it has been used in stereotyping
(I am one of them amongst others)
search paddy and mick jokes ,the basement is full of them
thank you for explaining the term Paddy is as offensive to an Irishman as boy is to a black person I never knew that in all my 62 years
whilst doing my searches I found your post reasoning that Basque cu-nt is not a racial slur by the same token is Irish cu-nt not a racial slur ?
Harsh? I could have banned him permanently on the spot. By giving him a one week ban it gives him the benefit of the doubt. It wasn't OTT racism otherwise he would have been permanently banned. But it was racist enough for a warning by a temporary ban, but that was my call to make.
As I said context is everything.
His post was made in anger. It was not banter and wasn't intended to be banter. He's been pissy as fuck since I and others called him out on, and took the piss out of, his ITK rubbish. He's had jabs at a few members lately. He thought it was hilarious when it looked like OneBard had been scammed on the streaming thread. What type of person laughs at another's misfortune?
The term "Paddy" is offensive to many Irish people but not all, unless its qualified with a negative stereotype or an insult. It's also offensive to many British people that have Irish parents or grandparents, but again not all of them are offended by it as a word. It's the context it's used in that matters.
As for Basques.... not sure why you brought that up? Are you trying to say I'm a hypocrite?
The Basque question is a quagmire as not everyone would consider the Basque a race for a start. Most people would consider them Spanish. Do you consider scousers a race? Calling someone a Basque cùnt or a Scouse cùnt isn't in and of itself racist to many people. It's offensive, its xenophobic probably, but to go into racial territory you need to play on negative stereotypes too. And then it has to have a connotation of hate or anger towards the intended target. That's how I judge it.
You are right about one thing, it is tough to mod a forum - especially when so many fucking members can't act like adults but get pissy when they are challenged in a debate or lash out after a bit of banter.
And tbh its not a committee modding here, I'm not asking for anyone's opinion on whether he should be banned for his post or not. I make the call based on my experience and the tone of the post or the situation building up to that post. I have the full backing of the owners and if someone doesn't like the way I mod they can complain to the owners who will ask me to explain any given situation.
Example: fivetothree complained to the owners about my banning him for repeated trolling, they contacted me, I explained, showed them the posts in question, the number of complaints from other members sick of his trolling and they agreed with me and thanked me.
If people could act like adults on forums there would be no need for mods, but they can't mostly. So there you go.
