But what if he comes good while on loan and there is a claim to be made that you could see it all along and only your managerial expertise and 30 years in football could identify what was needed.

Wtf is it with us and loaning out players that clearly don't have a future?!! Other than ESR, it seems that every player that is up for sale then becomes a subject of loan discussions, with the option to buy usually built in, so no obligation on the club who are loaning the player.
I suspect it comes about for a couple of reasons, firstly...and this is probably the main one...no one is prepared to match our evaluation and secondly, the flawed notion that xgt highlights above, that we're scared to let them go in case they come good, which is a typically cowardly Wenger approach.
Of course, what usually happens is that they go nowhere and sit on their arse for another season while we pay them, or they go on loan for a season, aren't bought and then come back to sit about.
We then eventually let them walk away for nothing when their contract is up, when we could have got a reasonable fee if we hadn't overvalued them. Bonkers. Just fucking sell the blokes.

It was one of the biggest pro-deals Arsenal have offered in the club’s history.
Manchester United came in and gladly doubled Arsenal’s wage offer to £30,000-per-week which the 16-year-old accepted.
Arsenal have a wage structure and were never going to get near Manchester United’s offer.

Some of reports suggesting that we looking for £50m for ramsdale - we bought raya to replace him and he cost around £30m, and yet we supposedly looking for £20m extra for a keeper that we view as inferior to him ?? How the fcuk does that work ??
£16m for Nketiah is ridiculous. Id rather keep him on the bench than flog him for that. Where would we pick up a reserve forward, who has scored EPL goals for that amount of money?mcdowell42 wrote: ↑Tue Jul 30, 2024 11:27 pmEXCL: Marseille make improved offer to sign Eddie Nketiah from Arsenal. Welcome to him, French football may be just the level he’s at to come across as decent, premier league unfortunately is out of his reach for the moment at least
xgtdec wrote: ↑Wed Jul 31, 2024 7:36 amYou’d think he would be getting a better price but at the end of the day he’s only worth as much as another team is willing to offer. We’re obviously willing to sell him, he’s a fairly shit player bar a few one offs here and there so we’ve absolutely no leverage.
So you can get him gone with a few quid in your pocket or you can stare at him on the bench for another season.
