Those years when GG just couldn't or wouldn't get the players we needed ended up repeating themselves 20 years later but with worse player on huge salaries.
Thinking back to those mid 90s years, we hadn't adapted to the changing environment of the Premiership and had slipped way behind Man Utd and been overtaken by the likes of Blakburn and the barcodes who were suddenly lobbing money around. We were linked with players like Keane, as you say but also other 'big' names like Shearer, Rob Jones, that cûnt Sutton and the odd player overseas. Nothing ever came of it though because we just didn't have broad enough horizons. That's why the signing of Bergkamp in the summer of 1995 was so incredible, it's hard to get across to younger supportes, just how incredible and groundbreaking that signing was.

Either way, the Bergkamp signing was the single most important signing in the club's history.

Has much changed ? Really changed I mean ? We dont sign top players at the peak of their game - never have and probably never will. The lunatic cultists have always defended our refusal to buy the top players by throwing phrases out like FFP etc, but other clubs manage it by looking at the bigger picture - proper big clubs like madrid know that the revenue they will get from merchandise and sponsorship deals for the likes of mbappe will more than cover the cost of the deal to sign him, and it ensures the club will always be seen as THE club in world football and that in turn entices more fans and more merchandise sales. I'm not advocating that we should be pushing the boat out to that degree (cos that was one massive financial deal), but for sure we should be well capable of landing a superstar player every season but CHOOSE not to go that route. Going on tours to america and asia can raise your profile to a degree, but if you really want to raise your profile sign a world class player and watch the money and the hype flow in on the back of it
