Is Merino just Cebellos 2.0?

Hard to tell - ceballos has at least played for real madrid almost 100 times in his career, but merino went to geordies and dortmund and flopped at both
Wasn't he about 21 when he flopped?!

He can't be that shite if he's a Spain regular.

I think Merino is a good player, will do really well for us. Can't judge him on what he did for another club...... We would never have signed Henry, Bergkamp, Paddy etc etc!!

Bergkamp had done it with Ajax who were a big european club still at that time. Henry had done it with monaco and they were successful club at the time. Both PV4 and Henry were still young players who could develop into top level players. Merino is 28 years old so at this stage he probably is what he is, and he has never produced at a big club, and that rings few alarm bells for me anyway
And yet he's deemed good enough for Spain.

Your judging him on a long time ago and by all accounts barca and other were in for him this time.

No idea how good he is but hopeful if he's deemed good enough for the best nation in Europe he ain't that bad!

He is a back up for Spain so lets be clear about that - if gavi had not been injured merino might not have even made the squad for the euro's, and then he also got bumped up pecking order when kroos clocked pedri and he missed the last few games. Secondly yes I know that spain won the euro's, but this isnt the same quality of spanish squads that we have seen in previous tournaments - absolute dross like ayoze peres (used to play for geordies) and fernan torres were in the squad, and their main 2 strikers were morata (who was shit for chavs) and 34 year old joselu who was shit for the geordies, so the ;evel of quality has dropped A LOT.

That being said, you are correct when you say that I am judging him from years ago and he might have improved since that time so maybe I am being harsh - however the thing here is that he is filling a position of massive importance in any team, and I cant help feeling that it is a patchwork signing for a crucial position. Does the actions of the club not speak loudly too ? Putting him on a par price wise with nketieh is not a positive indicator at all in my book, plus for a club that talks a lot about winning the league, if he is good enough why wont we just go out and pay the asking price cos it is far from excessive in today's market ??

Agree with this and to keep it in context with what was being discussed, I seem to remember that Ceballos was also in the Spanish squad, back when they had a better side than the one they’ve currently got.

Fair play to Temu Pep. If he pulls Merino off, he would’ve rebuilt the midfield from the fragile mess left behind by the French waffler

Surely Partey qualifies in this instance, as he was also signed by Lego Head.
To be fair Partey is about 3-4years older than what is stated on his passport. He would’ve been in his prime otherwise. Saudi beckons. Emerging midfield is going to be a mixture of brute force and guile and we haven’t had this for 2 decades.

Maybe we’re at cross purposes here. I’m no fan of Partey, he’s been a disappoint from day one imo and I’ve wanted him gone for the last three summers including this one.

I thought that your point was that with the signing of Merino, Arteta now had his own midfield and my point was that he has that with Rice, Partey, Jorginho and Vieira, because he signed them all.

🔴⚪️👀 Arteta on final days of the summer transfer window: “Anything can happen and we have to be ready”.

“A lot of surprises can come…”.

“We will be prepared”, says as reported by @SamJDean.

Arteta says delay over his contract down to a busy transfer window. Confirms plan is sit down for talks once transfer window shuts.

🔴⚪️ Arteta on Nketiah and Forest deal on: “I expect Eddie to train with us today and get ready for tomorrow, that’s it”.

“Whatever happens will happen if it’s good for everybody”.

Yes I think with Merino, the midfield balance should be close to what Arteta wants. Apart from Rice, none of his buys have made the cut so the search has continued instead of settling for dross like Venga did. This has been an area of neglect for 2 decades so it was never going to be an easy fix.

From Artetas news conference on BBC Sport
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was asked about any interest in Raheem Sterling: "My time with Raheem was exceptional. We built a really strong relationship together. He was unbelievable at the time we were together. He taught me a lot as well, about individuals, how they, players think, how we support them. He is someone I have really strong feelings about."
It's fucking gonna happen ain't it? :banghead:

If he signs this whinging c.unt, then the cone boy has put a huge target on his back should it not work out - the media are already dropping hints that the progress narrative is growing old and that he needs to win trophies now, and with exception of a tiny percentage of really young fans all Gooners will be disgusted if we sign this c.unt, so it better work out for him

I'm surprised people still get pissed off about this.

It wouldn't be the same if we didn't sign one of their rejects.

But our record of signing utter turds from the Chavs doesn't bode well -
Gallas, Diara, Cech, Luiz, William,

Even the less appalling players are nothing more than meh -
Benayoun, Havertz & Jorginho

We can't fish in that rancid pond any more :banghead:
