You'd need to tie a plank across your ass and bring mountaineering gear to climb back out of that thing. Her burst hedgehog would be like an aircraft hanger covered in bears.

Good training match to stretch the legs before Sunday. All good

One way of looking at it I suppose.
Conserve energy, don’t concede and take chances. Achieved 2/3. We could’ve gone up a few gears but it wasn’t necessary.

You seriously believe that we only went through the motions, set out not to concede, but had no intention of putting in the extra effort to win the game?

Apart from the fact that it would be a disgrace if true (and no way is it true), then it must be the way we approach almost every European match, because it was the same old disjointed, crap performance. We were poor, very poor and trying to justify every aspect of our performances as some cunning masterplan is bonkers. I'll admit that one or two of us on here lean towards the negative side, but trying to put a positive spin on performances like last night, really is polishing a turd.

I didn’t watch the game but I was able to see the double save on YouTube.

How poor were we? (Honestly?)
Like running through molasses - Slow, Turgid with NO Creativity.... If Martinelli doesn't score against Cheaty; I'm assuming he'll get picked, then he
needs to be dropped to the reserves or fuck off ... He has had 3 Very Clear chances in the last 3 games and totally fluffed his lines. :(

We clearly put in the effort needed to win because we created chances. My point is that this was not a win at any cost game and Atalanta are far from pushovers like some suggest. There are 7games left at this stage and with a key game coming up on Sunday, we had to be pragmatic.

I don't recall anyone saying that Atalanta are "Pushovers", if anything the posts on this thread were saying they are a decent Attacking team etc

The save against Villa and again last night were absolutely incredible. Look at where he is at the moment both players head the ball, dead and buried, yet somehow he manages to scramble and make the safe.

The Villa one is still the best for me because he’s still on the ground when Watkins heads it.

As OBG has said, I don't recall anyone on here suggesting Atalanta were a pushover, but many were predicting a tough match. Also, I didn't say this was a win at all costs game, but I wouldn't be quite as complacent about things as you and others seem to be. We have a history of fucking up in Europe and getting wins under your belt is the best policy. It also keeps a positive momentum going.

As for creating chances, I think that's generous. We had Saka's free kick and two chances for Martinelli from open play, neither of which were as nailed on as some think....that was it. My contention was that we couldn't have "moved through the gears" as you said. No way were we deliberately holding back, it was simply a crap performance and typical of us in Europe.

Both cracking saves, but for me Rodders, last night's was the best of the two. He was further away from the ball after it was headed and last night he had to get down to scoop it off the ground. The Watkins one was a better height to save.

Still, pedantry really, because both deserve to be lauded.

What I also noticed; as I'm sure many of you have done is that (after having spoken with the GK Coach) Just as Retegui looks at Raya then starts his run up to kick the ball in that split second between him looking at Raya and then to the ball as he is about to kick it (19 - 20 seconds on the video) Raya moves slightly to his right which gives him the edge to dive further and quicker to save the ball. 8)

Even so his recovery from being on the ground having saved the actual penalty kick to then get back up and stop the header is pretty fu king Good! :barscarf:

True. And a far cry form the days when they’d easily trickle in past helmet head

Ah yes, the good old days, when every penalty was a certain goal conceded. Never sure why we bothered making the other side take the kick, instead of just awarding them the goal.

As you say, Cech was abysmal and likewise Leno and Ramsdale after him. In total they faced 43 penalties and saved 3. That's a 7% success rate.

As it's Friday afternoon I decided to take a look at the stats all the way back to Fabianski (not including odd keepers that played a couple of games in total). Stats as follows, first figure is number of penalties faced and the second is the number of saves and the % success rate:

Fabianski 11 - 3, 27%
Szczesny 19 - 3, 16%
Ospina 8 - 1, 12.5%
Cech 18 - 1, 5.5%
Leno 17 - 2, 12%
Ramsdale 8 - 0, 0%

TOTAL 81 - 10, 12%

Fabianski way out in front and woeful from Cech and Ramsdale. We're going back about 15-16 years here, so a fair sample to arrive at a 12% success rate overall. I wonder what the PL team average is over 15 years?
