Wright bang out of order to use Rocky in this way (31/7)

usual thread starter… I know working for TalkSport can make the hosts say stuff just to get a reaction, but Wright should consider the memory of Rocastle in using his sadly departed former colleague to back up his statements, either on the radio or the newspaper.
And aside from that, one of the things that thrilled about Rocky was that he was a young player finding his way and learning from mistakes made because he was given the opportunity to play by a manager that believed in his raw talent. Not so different from what Arsene Wenger is trying to do. We all agree a couple more experienced heads are required, but Wrighty’s gone a little OTT on this one by using Rocky to make his point.

i think where rocky's concerned, a raw nerve has been touched here.
so some people are going to get worked up.
wright often blurted out statements that he came to regret, including one about wanting to go to benfica half way through the double season. wenger punished him by not giving him playing time at the end of the season when he had recovered from injury, no appearance in the cup final, he missed out on the world cup finals squad and was sold to west ham.
better for him to have kept his counsel methinks...

I agree
I think his comments are well below the belt.

The whole tone of his piece is designed to whip up the impression that he really cares about Arsenal and that it's very sad what's happening to the club.
Pathetic stuff.

The Rocky statement was naive but Ian Wright is not the sharpest tool in box..However I 100% AGREE with the basics in what he is trying to put accross.
Whether he is trying to get headlines for his own ego or actually cares about the club, his words are the same as many of us talking down the pub or at football training. The current situation is a JOKE. Wenger has done absolutely nothing about the squad or lack of depth. This is the 4th season in a row that anybody with half an idea about the game knows what an impact an experienced proven talanted player has on the other players - look at the impact that Beckham had when turning up for training!! Cesc was writing on the website kissing serious arse.
Eboue can have bad game after bad game but knows in his heart that there is fuck all alternative and the chances are that he will be in the starting XI the following game.
Fuck the board and fuck the manager.... This is our club - if he keep buying saucepans then fine - fucking charge half price for the tickets but the club are treating us (the fans) like uneducated clueless idiots that are willing to pay THE HIGHEST TICKET PRICES IN THE WORLD!
Who are the CU*@s ?????

Never liked Wright.
Was Wright in there when we beat Liverpool in the League cup?
Was Wright there when we won the League at Anfield in 89?
Where was he when we won the the league only conceding 18 goals and losing one game all season?
What impact did he really have during the double winning season of 98?
Apart from having a pop at the Arsenal fans after we lost at home to Blackburn
The week Arsenal signed Wright Arsenal put 6 past Austria Vienna and 5 past Sheffield Utd and if my memory serves me correct we top of the league and reigning league champions with the two of the best forwards of thier era (Smith and Merson) and two of the best striking prospects (Campbell and Andy Cole)
Cole never got a look in and Campbell went backwards, Smith never hit double figures again after Wrights arrival.
I always associate Wrights arrival with break up of the Thomas, Davis, Rocastle midfield, boring long ball football and mid table mediocraty.
So as far as I'm concerned his comments count for fuck all.
I'd be more inclined to respect the view point of Tony Adams , George Graham or Charlie George. Proper Arsenal legends.

80's Gooner,
You are joking, right?
You're entitled to say you didn't like Wright's Rocky comments, the man himself and even that you didn't rate him as a player. But to start deminishing his reputation because Arsenal achieved success before he was even at the club is just plain ridiculous!!
Someone can't be responsible for not being at the club/in the team when success has been previously achieved, otherwise you can point to any era in Arsenal's history and say exactly the same thing about other Arsenal greats.
And whether you like it or not, Ian Wright is an Arsenal legend who scored an amazing 185 goals in just 288 matches - a better strike rate than Henry - and by the way, almost single-handedly helped us compete and win trophies during the early to mid 90's, when we had a great defence but an absolutely dreadful and unimaginative midfield.
I could go on and dissect a lot of the other rubbish you wrote - associating Wright's arrival with George Graham's decision to dismantle the midfield
; or the fact that you'd rather have kept Campbell instead (are you sure?)
for instance - but to be honest, I'm not certain your comments warrant being taken that seriously as they are obviously borne out of ignorance!!
Sorry if that seems harsh, but really....

Dare I suggest that without Wright we may have at some point in the mid 90s done a Forest and found ourselves going down a division, as no one else could score at that point.
Agree with comments about his personality - this being a guy who called a phalidomide linesman a 'fucking cripple' against Norwich in 1993. He had an excessive amount of righteous indignation at Ron Atkinson making those comments about a certain Chelsea player in 2004, yet has not sufficiently apologised for his conduct on that occasion to get self righteous with others for my liking.
As for the Rocky thing - this is a by-product of mawkishness - as a Daily Express reader would endlessly claim 'What would Princess Diana make of this if she was still alive' to any number of self righteous rantings on our nations decline, Rocky becomes the subject of any rantings about Arsenal's decline.
When as pointed out - he would approve of much about Wenger's way and did benefit from a similar outlook 20 years ago.

Good to see a measured, reasonable and insightful assessment......row 29 wrote:The Rocky statement was naive but Ian Wright is not the sharpest tool in box..However I 100% AGREE with the basics in what he is trying to put accross.

You might be an uneducated, clueless idiot or a *word censored*, luckily not all of us are. You might also think Wenger is a rubbish coach who knows nothing about football and who should fuck off, but the reality is we are in the middle of a transition and most of us (even those who are critical of him) can see he is one of the best coaches in world football. If you can't see that we're in a transitionary period, where have you been for the last 3 years?? Let me know if you need more info, it's been addressed in shitloads of detail on this forum and on many, many other Arsenal websites, so it wouldn't be difficult.
Oh and by the way, did you notice what our team did last season, without the transfer and wages budget of even Portsmouth, West Ham or Man City, let alone Chelsea, United, Liverpool and Spurs? Looked like a fucking good performance to me.
Compare like with like - we are in the middle of a transformation, and are doing bloody well given that all the money is sunk in the property projects right now. It will be another couple of years before we have real money. I suggest you learn to live with it. And enjoy the genius of one of the best coaches in the world.
The tickets are undoubtedly expensive, but when you take into account that other big clubs don't include the 7 cup games we get in their season tickets, the difference is not as great as it looks.
Perhaps you should stop getting your football information from The Sun and other tabloids. They talk shit, which is why Wright's column looks like it's in the right place.
And what is that bollocks about Beckham's influence in a few training sessions???! Or was that in The Sun too?

I wrote an article for The Gooner a few years back saying that whilst Wright was a great player he was never an Arsenal legend in my eyes. I got a lot of stick for it but I think I had a good point.
The main reason I gave (amongst a lot of others) was the whole Benfica incident, which Wright apologists seem to forget. I'll never forget his interview on MOTD, with his stupid floppy hat, as he moaned that we wouldn't let him speak to Benfica for a transfer. This was a couple of months after breaking the goalscoring record! How quickly he forgot. Yet four months on when we've won the league he hangs out the dressing room window like he is Mr. Arsenal who has single handedly won it for us. The guy has no class.
And to use Rocky's name in this way is pathetic. I can put up with his rubbish Sun column saying whatever he likes, but the minute he starts using a real Arsenal legend to make his cheap points then he has gone too far.
What a fool that man is. Though I do quite like him on new 'Gladiators'.
