usual thread starter… Wishere’s promotion is based on the kid making the most of opportunities in pre-season – the same opportunities the others listed have had. Arsenal attempt to develop talent in-house, but invariably, Wenger feels he can get better in the transfer market from elsewhere. So he buys youngsters who have been playing first team football and who he thinks are better than the Academy produce. Jack Wilshere is a one off.
Note that Justin Hoyte has not had any promotion in his squad number in the way that Theo Walcott has. But Theo was another example of young talent bought in. Coquelin is another. Interesting to see if he gets promoted next year. If that’s to happen I expect to see him on the fringes of the first team later in the season.

If you are good enough you will make it...
And if you are not you wont.
Fact is the majority of Arsenals youngsters wont make it, AND the reason why the Lansburys et al, have not been promoted like Jack has, is that when it all comes down to it, they just arent good enough yet (possibly ever) to make it at the required level at Arsenal! As far as Justin Hoyte goes, he will never be good enough to play for the 1st team (consistently) so if some mugs like Villa or Borough want to buy him
...let him go.

If a player is good enough he will make it.
There is a tricky problem with that though.
Often, only a run of first team games helps a player make the final leap from a player who has been good on loan, to a first team regular.
So it is a bit chicken and egg, and it is what has happened to Hoyte, who is to good for the Championship, but not quite a Premiership player.
The academy players who make it often have a look of being ready on their first team debuts. They have made the step up on loan, have not fallen into that skill gap between loan level and first team.
We saw this with Cole, with Clichy and I think we are seeing it with Wilshere.
