2002 Double team

Post by donaldo »

The last member of the double winning team of 2002 has left with Freddie going. In just 5 short years who would have believed it. What a great team that was. TA, PV, TH, DB, Bobbie.Sol and red headed Freddie Etc. Thanks for the memories lads

The 01/02 side was the beginning of what became, if not the greatest, at least the most entertaining side in the history of English football. As this side is supposed to be the beginning of another great era for us…lets compare the two teams.

Seaman/ Wright / Taylor Vs Lehmann, Almunia, Fabianski
Seaman and Lehmann are probably as different as to human beings possibly can be so they’re hard to compare. Wright and Taylor were both predicted great futures but never made it. I very much doubt Almunia will do better but we’ll have to wait and see with Fabianski…have we finally found our new Dave Seaman?

Lauren/ Dixon / Luzney Vs Eboue/ Hoyte/ Sagna/ Gilbert
Whilst the right backs we had 01/02 were defensively more solid we got 4 right backs who all are very good going forward now, which is very important in modern football. Both Eboue and Hoyte’s problem is that they find it hard to keep their concentration for 90 min. However, If Eboue just get his head together I think we might have the new Cafu on our hands. I doubt Gilbert will be here for much longer and Sagna…well we’ll just have to wait and see.

Adams / Keown / Campbell Vs Toure/ Gallas / Djouro / Senderos
Sol was among the very best defenders in the world at this point and Keown was probably playing the best football of his career as well despite being in his 30s. Adams didn’t play a lot but obviously just lifted the whole team with just his presences. I believe Toure has the potential to become as good as Campbell, and hopefully he can keep it up for a longer period of time. Gallas is a great player when he’s fit, although my personal opinion is that he’s a bit overrated. I doubt there are any better defender if the world than Djouro in his age group so it will be really interesting to see his development over the next few years. However, with Senderos not living up to his reputation, I really think we miss a Tony Adams in defence who can pull the strings and be an obvious leader.

Cole / Van Bronkhorst Vs Clichy, Traore
Cole was a world class player at Arsenal where he could do what he’s good at, and his partnership with Pires was simply outstanding. Clichy’s a good player and improved a lot last season…hopefully he can build on that and become as good as Cashly was when he was at Highbury and if not Traore looks very promising.

Freddie / Parlour VS Hleb/ Walcott
Depite not being the biggest or most technically gifted playersFreddie and Parlour never gave up a fight and could run up and down the pitch all day long for their team. Hleb is the completes opposite but if he learns to run without the ball and not hang with his head after one bad pass I think he could make it. We’ll have to wait and see what Theo can deliver but I have high hopes for him this season.

Vieira/ Edu/ Parlour / Grmandi Vs Fabregas / Gilberto / Diaby / Denilson / Song
I remember saying before the 01/02 season…how can we expect catching ManUre with Edu (who still far from had adapted to English football), Parlour or Grimandi in central midfield? However, Vieira could probably have been left to do the job on his own in central midfield if needed at this point (Yes, I think he was that good!) and however played next to him always did a good job.
We have 4 players in central midfield this season that all are more than good enough for the job. In fact, I’d love to see AW play with 3 central midfielders more often this season. The thought of a central midfield with Fabregas, Diaby and Denilson (Like in The CC final last year) is mouthwatering!

Pires Vs Rosicky
I sometimes look at the “Arsene Wengers magic hatâ€

WHY ALL THE NOISE? IT WOULD BE MEN AGAINST BOYS!!

Post by I Hate Hleb »

IN MY NOT-SO-HUMBLE OPINION, THAT 2001/2002 SQUAD WAS MILES BETTER AND WOULD THRASH THE PANTS OFF THE CURRENT SQUAD!!

THE 2001/2 DOUBLE WINNERS HAD A BETTER GOAL-KEEPER; BETTER DEFENCE; STRONGER MIDFIELD AND PROBABLY THE CLUB'S BEST EVER FORWARD LINE.

THE CURRENT SQUAD HAS A DODGY AND TEMPREMENTAL KEEPER; A DEFENSIVELY NAIVE BACK FOUR; A UN-BALANCED MIDFIELD, AND A UNPROVEN FORWARD LINE.

THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT THEY HAVE LOTS OF POTENTIAL AND MAY, BUT ONLY MAY, END UP BECOMING AS GOOD IF NOT BETTER THAN THE ARSENAL OF 2001/2. I HAVE MY DOUBTS, BUT I SUPPOSE ONLY THE PASSAGE OF TIME WILL ENABLE US TO TRUELY TELL.

As far as I know Stuart Taylor is a 2nd choice keeper at Aston Villa . Bob Wilson had high hopes for him too.

Well said Rebel Gooner - At the end of the day we are all gooners who want the best of the club and after going through the Terry Neill years I dont ever want to go back to that again ! Im sure Arsene knows what he's doing but I do think we need a signing or 2 !

I was in hospital in 1979 and got a signed card from Terry Neill , Fred Street and Chippy! I was well chuffed. As a man he was a nice geezer but the footy was shit ! and we had some good players too that was the thing!!
