usual thread starter... except it isn't for two reasons. this is well late to start a thread but as someone else posted the piece i haven't even had a chance to read it. and that's because i was offline for over 24 hours and have sh*tloads to catch up on. so er... do i have the feeling that the topic of silvestre has already been well explored in general chat? i won't even bother looking as if i go there i won't get our for at least an hour. still, if you want to discuss the blog entry below, feel free...
Taking the Mik? - Blog (21/8)
So a lot of gooners 'hate' him... er why ...do we 'hate' opponents who are crap? No. Do we hate opponents who are excellent players and frustrate us year after year when playing against us? Yes. Clearly Silvestre is not crap and has delivered for years at the highest level. I used to hate Sol Campbell when he was up the road and I disliked Gallas. Silvestre like Wes Brown has been one of those players you hope is shit but never actually does much wrong. Clearly United chose last season to go with Wes Brown and that leaves Silvestre out in the cold. I'm sure what we are seeing here is Fergie losing his grip on the club. After all he fucked up with Aaron Ramsey by not meeting him and he's given us a player for next to nothing when clearly this was supposed to be a quiet deal to help out his mate Roy Keane. Arsene has hijacked the move. He's a squad signing who gives us good cover on the left side and has bags of experience at the highest levels. How can people complain we lack experience and then complain when we sign experience? Or is it that they just complain? Now if we had signed Gary Neville on the other hand ......

Agree, but I'm not sure if rednose is losing his grip on the club, although the way he treated the Ramsey deal was hilarious. AW has shown his (considerable) skill in the transfer market again. Even if the guy only plays half a dozen times in the season, that is good enough. Let's pray our midfielder is on the way, and then the squad will actually be looking rather good.androyd wrote:So a lot of gooners 'hate' him... er why ...do we 'hate' opponents who are crap? I wouldn't say Silvestre was crap, but the mancs have had the best years out of him. Now Ferguson has bedded Evra in he saw Silvestre as surplus and was happy enough to get him off their wages.
I just feel we should be aiming for better quality, experience does not have to mean 30+ years old. You look at what other clubs were chasing him, Sunderland and Man City, are these the clubs we expect to be competing with for players?
Gareth Barry for me is the type we need, not won a great deal, hungry for success, can play wide left or centre, only 27.
He may cost £16 mil but thats the going rate for top internationals.. If only he had been born in Honfleur instead of Hastings.
One other thing what happened to the clubs policy of only offering 1 year contracts to players over 30, yet Silvestre (31) gets a 2 year deal.

Gareth Barry is the most over-rated player in the premiership, 16 million pounds for that guy would be worthy of a prison sentence for theft in most countries - he has never played well against a top 4 side for villa and never played well against a good team for england.
That midfielder is never on his way i fear toure is going to be converted into a holding midfielder and silvestre is going to be a regular starter.

Sorry but I remember Ure for his high profile errors, low profile errors, ginger hair, medium profile errors and being generally very crap. Despite being a world record price for a centre half (no one had centre backs then) at the time.OK he may be the player, like Ian Ure many years back, who will be remembered for his high profile errors but he has always been whole hearted in the cause of Arsenal.
