When you look at the Defencive options that Red nose has you'd probaly find MS at the bottom of the pecking order. So you understand that he was surplus to requirments.
Ferdinand
Vidic
Neville
Evra
Brown
O'Shea
So are main defencive pairing would likely still be Kolo and Willy. If one of them is injured/suspended our only back up would be Senderous.
Kolo
Willy
Djourou - Like to be continuing his development with action at Rennes
Senderos - Oh Dear!
Norveit - Already on loan at Salamanca.
Song - Is probably continuing as Def CM.
Now that we have the use of 7 subs to choose from have MS and the experience that he holds suprisenly this transfer makes sence.
I'm looking forward to seeing our new Def midfielder when he comes although this may (could & hope) be nearer the deadline.
I still would like a tall stong (mobile) defender. Like Sol & big Ton. MS signing is the Lauren Blanc signing to help others in the next two seasons. Which means Wengers in for the long game....
TheOne2Smooth wrote:another midget centre half yeah thats what we need!! sorry as i said on the other thread did he get a 1 year contract? as he is over 30! we lost so many decent players because of that 1 year contract bollocks
Oh but doesn't Arsene know?
Midget................
The man who says you must cheer and love everything Arsenal regardless is already knocking our latest signing!
Nice one...........how are your principals these days?
Like I said on a previous post I am A rose tinter but I consider myself to have a better grasp of reality we lose so many headers in the centre of defence Silvestre is not reknown for being a great header of the ball and I'm pretty sure he aint that tall either, I hope he proves me wrong but I cant see it!
Well maybe you will withdraw the midget jibe then as none of us are allowed to call an Arsenal player anything derogatory?
Find me a proper quote saying Silvestre is not good in the air from an expert on such matters?
Or was he lucky to play for Man Yoo for 8 years?
Fuck me some of you lot really need your heads sorting!
Arsene knows!
We have to respect the financial position we are in at the moment!
We need experience and squad depth!
Silvestre ticks all tose boxes but you still are not happy!
Amazing how the rules change when he used to play for one of our rivals! Already people are saying they won't cheer himand that to me is fucking sad!

United's first choice defence is the best: Vidic, Ferdinand, Evra, and Neville, with van der Sar behind them. But they look pretty thin after that. Brown is one decent back-up option at CB and FB, but O'Shea has been shit for the last couple of seasons. And then who else? Perhaps Ferguson has one or two coming up from the youth ranks that we don't know about, or is about to make a signing, but allowing two CBs (Silvestre and Pique) to go in one transfer window looks risky to me.
A nice juicy double injury to Ferdinand and Vidic for a good chunk of the season would make life interesting. Brown and O'Shea at CB? Yes please.
Does anyone think that he might actually get a better run in the first team than is being suggested?
* He was rumoured as being on his way to City. Only one motive for that - guaranteed first team matches. He wouldn't sign for us knowing he'd be a reserve player. (I'm guessing, but there's a lot of 'ifs' and 'maybes'...)
* We need a strong CDM. If Wenger can't find one he wants for a good price (wouldn't surprise me, he himself hasn't ruled this out) then Kolo might be an option with MS alongside his compatriots in an all French backline.
* He's being promoted a bit on the new site (picture specials, interviews etc. being advertised). Maybe its just me, but this sort of hype seems a great deal more than Amaury Bischoff (who is undoubtedly a squad player for a while) received.
Some valid points Ram and the first one especially was of my main concerns at first. At Man City (as a LB at least) and definitely at Sunderland he would have pretty much been guaranteed to be a first choice starter so I’m just hoping it’s one of those situations whereby he’d rather play 20 games for a club like Arsenal than 45 games for Sunderland/City - I know I would!
Still a bit baffled by the £50k a week wages (assuming it’s true) if he is gonna be essentially a squad player - would certainly put the contract offer to Flamini in a different light.
Time will tell I guess, it'll either be a stroke of genius or... well, just a stroke! And we'll end up with nothing down the left side!
So what if he was on the bench for United . He was just unlucky that at that point in time united had Heinze ( now starting LB for Real Madrid ) and later Evra ( also one of the best LB's in the world as competion .
If Cashly Hole had not fecked off to Chelski , maybe Clichy would not have had the chance to prove his brilliance , or maybe he would also want to leave due to lack of first team oppurtunity .
At the end of the day we have to keep in mind the financial outlay , we are getting MS for peanuts . He is versatile and experienced and if nothing else provides us good cover for Clichy .
Also i can see Wenger putting him on the pitch in the final 20 minutes or so when we are leading to tighten us up defensively ( either as CM or LM )
I think its good that we have signed him...we all been moaning that we need experience....think we can safely say that he has that and may well prove alot of you wrong and help mold some of the youngsters.

Who is to say that he could'nt have got more at Man City or Sunderland, they are throwing huge wages about?
Also with reagrds to playing Champions League football and the chance to win titles.............is that not exactly what we are trying to acheive this season?
He might have got more or at least the same amount of money at City, I'll give you that but I doubt he's coming here to pick up medals. In that case he might as well have stayed on at MAnUre and fought his way back into the team but maybe that was to much hard work for him.
It's hard to see anything else than that the main reason he's here is to join up with half of France and live an easy life in london. It would hardly the first player AW pick up without giving a fcuk about his attitude either.

As a player I am not doubting his quality and always thought he was quite good in the air actually and I could not care less which club he played for in his career. I am really really afraid that there is a possibility that toure will be pushed into midfield now and wenger will stick with what he has got then. I know that if you put your "common sense hat" on you would quickly dismiss that thought but we have seen over the last few seasons than common sense and Arsenal/arsene do not always go hand in hand
I think, although dont know for sure is that they got 1 year contracts because they were historically on big money and if the club had decided in that two years to sell them then they could have sat out their contract and took their wages (although I dont think they were those types of people). Whereas Silvestre comes in at £50k a week and over two years thats not going to break the bank. Could be wrong though
I cannot believe we have bourght this bloke. Injury prone and quite simply past it.
The fact he comes from Man Utd is worse. It speaks volumes that we are reduced to buying cast offs from other clubs and injury prone 'risks' ala Bischoff.
The only reason we were able to buy Nasri was because Wenger knew Hleb was going and could use that money to buy him. Do we really expect Silvestre to be a first choice centre half, the fact he was going to go to Man City or Sunderland shows how useless he is. I will boo Silvestre eveytime he plays and shame on you Arsene Wenger for buying him.
Four years without a trophy, no decent defensive midfielder left at the club, a team in permanent transition.
One last thing, our problem's in the last few seasons has been dealing with long balls over the top and our poor finishing, in the pre-season games and West Brom we still haven't improved in there area, just WHAT do they do in training?
Absolute disgrace that we bourght Silvestre and this signing makes me wonder just where we are going because at the moment it's nowhere.
Does any body have AVTO and listen to Silvestres interview.
I don't but I've heard that Silvestre hasn't arrived to sit on the bench and when asked about the backfour he is seeing himself as a Central Defender.
This could but the theory speculated on hear that Kolo would push up into Def Midfield. Personally thats not the answer and if anyone watches Kolo off the ball movement. He almost moves up the field as if its a big effort. All heavy & flat footed not what we need if the middle of the park.
I'd still like to see more of Eboue in the centre midfield role as I joked before about him playing there and soon thought it wouldn't be as bad.
I played up on the joke to the guy next to me and he started to win me and him over against W.Brom.
Did anyone notice Clichy playing as a winger in the one of the pre-seasons
games?? Could Silvestre replace Clichy and Clichy move up field. Where'd this leave Nasri. He'd move over to the right. So where's Eboue & Theo going?????????
What I have realised is that as a squad most all our players are versitile in more then one area.

I agree with you 100% that the "wrong geezer" is captain but lets get one thing clear.......it is gallas not kolo who is our best central defender and it isnt even a close contest either.
