Why Not Play Scout: Suggest Possible New Signings !!!

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Re: Why Not Play Scout: Suggest Possible New Signings !!!

With Freddie now gone we have to find someone who can score some goals from midfield. Rosicky will score more this year if he can manage to stay fit for more than 5 minutes. Hleb will not score goals, neither will Walcott. Eboue is cetainly not the answer on the wing. I would like to see Wenger splash the cash and sign Deco from Barcelona - a player Barca do not want any longer. I would also like to see him sign Michael Owen as the Club needs the boost of a real big-name signing. Owen could come in to the side and would not need the settling-in period of a foreign star (if not Owen then Anelka who is also used to English football). The comments made by Henry, Ljungberg and Gallas lately seem to indicate that the players are frustrated at the lack of big name arrivals.

Let's not forget that in 1997 we signed Marc Overmars, Manu Petit and 3 others to galvanise the squad and the fans - we won the Double. In 2001 we signed Sol Campbell, Richard Wright and Francis Jeffers and it had the same effect. I realise that not all of the signings made it at Arsenal, but it sure as hell gave players and fans a boost knowing that the Club was showing genuine ambition.

Have to agree with gus yet again when i say that some of the suggestions put forward on this forum are laughable. I'm not even comparing them to our unbeaten side because I think most would struggle to get on any Arsenal side over the last 20 years. I have said all summer that I would like to see us purchase queresma and that opinion still stands. However from there it gets a bit murky for me - I would say at the moment we have 4 centre midfielders (cesc, gilberto, diaby & denilson) and to sign an enforcer there would probably push diaby down the list although I would prefer him alongside cesc as he has more steel than gilberto although less defensive positioning. I also fear that if we sign a centre half it will djouru who will lose out and i def don't agree with that.

Realistically I can see us selling even more players before we buy with senderos the latest linked with a move away while reyes is gone as soon as someone is will to pay us a fair price. I rate cannavaro highly still and even though he is in his 30's I would still make an effort to see him cos he is a winner and was unsettled in madrid up to last week. It is very true to say that we are now doing our shopping on street markets as opposed to high street stores and, given the whole negative image of our club at the moment, that needs to be addressed. Every so often the club needs to make a signing that makes everyone sit up and take notice instead of just talking about what a big club we are. I suggested some time ago that it looked to me that wenger was stockpiling his transfer cash for a massive transfer like eto and as much as I want that to be true I suspect that the board is stockpiling it for their accounts to present at the agm.

We are at a crossroads here and the next 6 weeks will have a fair indication of the direction we are going. I do not doubt that if we cannot add quality additions in this transfer window (& pref before the season starts) then our glory days will be gone for a few years at least and wenger will go with it.

Royston Drenthe - superb left winger fro under 21 euros.

Ricardo Quaresma - amazingly talented Porto winger.

Nery Castillo - looked amazing for Mexico in Copa America, man city apparently after him.

Like the suggestions of unknowns that some came up with, after all thats the sort of player AW would go for and you don't need a scout to tell you how good some of the big names mentioned are.
