I disagree with you suggesting we didn't have the quality - we came 3rd by 4 points last season! We didn't have the numbers when a combination of injuries and bad form hit us.

Yes we came 4pts behind Man Utd but you fail to say we threw away a 5pt lead. with 9 games to goWe threw away leads against Birmingham twice Man Utd,Chelsea and Liverpool in the CL.If the squad was good in quality why did Wenger have to play Toure at right back and the error ridden Senderos at CH. :banghead:

However, in the last 4 years we have lost Vieira, Gilberto, Flamini, Diarra, Edu, Pires, Freddie, Hleb and many more all from midfield! And a lot of them from C Midfield!

We have one player left from the untouchables! and since that season we have been a "team in transition" - But we have lost so many since this that every year we become another team in transition!

This summer we lost 10 players through either sales or loans and brought in 4 that are eligible for the first team! Cesc is our most experienced player at 21 years old! - Our 7 man bench at fulham had an average age of 19.5!!!

We cannot continue like this, and although its blatantly obvious we can no longer keep up with Utd, Chelsea and now City in spending power, it shouldnt mean we dont buy altogether and become a selling club!

Someone earlier commented on how many times Wenger has had us finish outside out the top 4! I ask you this, before we started signing kids left right and centre, how many times under him did we finish outside the top 2!!!!
Last year we were unlucky with injuries, but we were lucky to be there or thereabouts at all!! No one expected us to do that well, and no one should expect it again!

Exactly right mate 8) It used to be a great source for us Gooners that we had never finished outside the top 2 under wenger and now we are saying that we have always finished in the top 4 and qualified for the champs league under him - if this is an indicator from the drop in our ambitions and standards then how soon will we be claiming to have always finished in the top 6 ??

Last season we overperformed simple as but it did give us a great possibility to use that as a launch pad in our quest for success this season but instead we have broken up yet another team by losing so many more players and experienced ones at that. To expect this team to perform as well as last season is totally unfair and unrealistic as our rivals have strengthened while we have weakened

Spot on Augie,

Before long it will be " we have never finished outside the top 6", then "we have always qualified for european football" then "we have always finished in the top half" i shant go on!!!

This issue needs to be addressed! I dont want balanced books, i want fuckin trophies. And the books are not balanced at that! They are very much in favour of making money - money that we never spend!!!!!

If this does anything good, i hope it gets rid of the corperate *word censored* that plague our stadium week in week out!

Another season without a trophy is simply not good enough the Arsenal faitful will turn on Wenger if this happens at the end of the season.

the simple fact is wenger must live or die by his decision. if the club fails to mount a realistic and sustained challenge for the major trophies,ie a cl s/f place, and 3rd place in the league by no more than 5 points off the top, then hes done ok.

anything worse imo is a failure, and a failure that in all liklihood could have been avoided with a couple of solid signings.

if he fails i think his time is up, as his self serving development of his 'own' team will have proved that it has been at the detriment to the club as a whole, due to a number of trophyless years with 4th place finishes. if he meets the targets, fine, but still he needs to take the club on again to start actually winning things.

being constant nearly men for a massive club is not ok, and if it occurs consistently something has to change. would benitez still be in cahrge at liverpool if they hadnt won the cl...no. that got him a stay of execution which i think is coming to an end if they dont win anything or get 2nd place. why should arsenal be any different? the past isnt a guide to the future, so wenger cant live on his past unbelievable glories, he has to be judged on the here and now, and the club has been major trophyless for to long (i mean CL or league, fa cup is meaningless on its own to me in todays game). if it carries on someone else must be given the opportunity to get the club wining again.

Thats my opinion.

i have a queston to others, if the club finishes 3rd or 4th again this year more than 15 points off the title and fails to get beyond the cl q/fs should wenger remain, with the prospect of the same the year after, should wenger still be in charge???

Not good to answer a question with a question, but who would replace Wenger?

Although Wenger hasn't spent what's available, and I criticise him for that, money is still going to be tight for another couple of years. And if Wenger goes, there's a strong chance Cesc will go, as will a number of our other players. And the coaches and scouting network too. Do you seriously think we could get a manager of the requisite quality on those circumstances?

For all the folly of not signing a DM, sacking Wenger next summer, even if we don't do well this season, would damage Arsenal, it would be cutting off our nose to spite our face.

the problem 26th may 1989 is next summer Wenger will go out and buy another few teenagers and ask for them to be given time while we will probably lose Cesc if we fail to win one of the big two trophies. How much longer do we give Wenger-youth to develop while we dont win trophies.

wenger has 2 more seasons and will then retire, my own feeling is he knows this season is a season too soon for the team and will have them ready for his last two, is that good enough then no, have promises made been broken then yes,

You hit the nail on the head - if Cesc goes before we start winning trophies again, Wenger's position will be very, very difficult to maintain. It needn't have been that way, but not signing additional quality this summer ramps the pressure up.

I'm seriously pissed off that Wenger hasn't signed a midfielder, and it does raise real doubts about his judgment, but I maintain that losing him at this stage would be the worst thing for our development. Until someone can explain how his sacking and replcaement could be achieved without damaging the club, I'll stick with that view, even with serious failures such as this.

We really need to win the fucking league this year, else things are going to start going tits up.

I'm not advocating that Wenger should go - far from it! - but I really don't like that question.

When Rioch was sacked in '95, most fans would have listed plenty of names to be the next manager... but who - apart from Dein - would have suggested Wenger? not many.

We simply do not know what managers are out there, and who could take over from Wenger... so it's an unfair question, that some on here - not necessarily you, 26may1989 - use to undermine someone else's argument.

However, the fact is... under Wenger, we have won 1 trophy in 4 years.. the FA Cup. In that time we have finished 3rd, 4th, 4th and 3rd.
- Now, with that record, I don't think it's wise to ask who could do a better job, because it really isn't all that impressive, is it? :?

Despite what I've said... I do not want Wenger to leave Arsenal! I have not lost faith in him, and I really believe we are good enough to win a cup competition this season, and remain in the top 4.. but I also don't believe that Wenger is the only man out there who could bring success to our club.

Just smacks of arrogance for me by Wenger, I think he's actually believing his own hype these days. He should remember he's not the manager of the reserve side, and we're not paying to see a reserve side.

As I said last night, we are in no danger of dropping out of the top 4 this year, but that in itself should not be good enough. Wenger said he would sign a defensive midfield player this year, he said it in the opening games programe notes, and he said it numerous times. Yet he hasn't signed anyone, even though he's had since May when Flamini left. Its baffling.

Fact is, if he doesn't win anything this year he'll completley loose the fans. I've remained patient with this team, I was convinced that this summer we would sure up the positions we needed and be ready, but we haven't, we've weakened. Amazing how he's started to spew shit about players this morning on Arsenal.com, as if to try and convince us.

Don't worry 88, I don't hide from asking who could replace Wenger, whether that's an unfair question or not. In fact, I think that must be capable of being answered before we can think about sacking Wenger. Otherwise, we'll just become like Newcastle.

I understand your point, that we the fans can't literally be expected to know who would replace Wenger. But my point is we should assess whether or not Wenger should be sacked if he doesn't win trophies etc only if there are credible alternatives, regardless of whether one of those replacements is going to be our boss.

Of course there are plenty of excellent coaches around, but I don't think any of them would touch us with a bargepole at this stage in our development and with Wenger sacked. In a couple of years' time, yes, they'll be breaking down the doors, but following a sacking of Wenger I think we would have to assume we would lose Cesc and a bunch of the other players. In that situation, AND without money being immediately available, I honestly don't think we could get a big name coach, and we'd end up with a hopeful young manager (Bilic, Adams etc). That may well mean not just finishing 3rd or 4th, but slipping back in a big way.

And we're not the same prospect that the younger Wenger joined in 1997. Then, it was a no-lose situation for him - great club but underachieving. He could have done much less and we still would have lauded him. Now we're different. We expect CL football as a matter of course, and apparently we expect to win trophies more regularly than at any time since the 1930s. And we probably expect to see good football too. A much more demanding job for an incoming manager.

So I'll continue to ask the question, fair or otherwise!

Wenger has far to much power.

The current board have built the club around him and it is proving fatal.

The man should just be concentrating on coaching and the plyaing the staff, but he seems to be pulling all the strings ala the new David Dein as well as manager of a football team? In my view an impossible situation, not just impossible but crazy!!

I have never been so angry as i am now, all summer we have been fed a constant flow of bullshit, and the sad thing is 90% of it has come from Wenger.

There are times when you have to buy a player when his price is over the odds, not worry about the value of the player in 3 years time. If we win things then the cost is worth it.

Iam sad to say it but Arsenal will not win anything this season, FACT. because of the boards inability to manage the club and lay all the responsibilty on Arsene Wenger.
