It’s a new striker Arsenal need for a title challenge (30/8)

usual thread starter… hmmm… well we have Eduardo to come back, Van Persie to find form and frankly more pressing priorities at the back and in midfield. Having said that, I am far from convinced that Bendtner will ever develop into the player as good as he thinks he is. Poor first touch and not really worth a place in the starting line-up. Strictly a last 15 minute man. A bit like Theo in that respect. And if everyone was fit, these guys would be on the bench where they belong. Back to awaiting reports from the treatment room then…

adebayor at times proved that he can be useful during direct combos, but still not smooth enuff for a starting attacker. totally agree that we need a link up man but not a 'striker' whom i think we have aplenty. a magician with primitive unpredictability, if you'd prefer, in the mould of kanu n bergkamp is what i miss to see. rosicky is the closest to having the classic poise im talking about. when he and the devastating eduardo return to 100%, we are in for a smooth ride. i also hope to see fabregas pushed further up, taking over hleb's roaming duties. everything is fantastic, actually, see u later, and peace out.

To be honest, I think our problems are at the other end of the field.

Gallas and Toure aren't an ideal pairing, and both would benefit from playing alongside a big, strong and powerful, centre back like Vidic, Campbell or Terry.

Denilson - who played well today - doesn't give us bite in midfield, and although we'll be ok at the Grove, I do worry that we'll struggle to boss the midfield in the away games. Hopefully Wenger will bring in a midfielder over the next couple of days

I rate Ade. Yes, he's had a busy summer, but I think he'll settle down again, and will be great for us again this season.

RvP has bags of quality, and can score goals, so fingers crossed he can stay fit this season. And if RvP and Ade can get plenty of playing time, then I think we have a real potent strikeforce that any team would want.

Vela looks to have real talent too, whilst Theo and Bendtner offer us options from the bench...albeit, unpredictable :?

And Eduardo - when fit - could be our wild card, and the boost we need come the turn of the year.

I'm not saying we don't need another striker, but I think we have more pressing matters to address, elsewhere in the team.

I agree, up front I think we are ok at the moment, I really rate Vela and think he could become a top top player.
Gallas is the weak link at the back but because he has been made captain again (why?) he is untouchable.

The article was obviously written before yesterday's superb performance. I know one display against a depleted Newcastle must be taken in context but it was light years away from the craven display at the Cottage, which must now be buried as a one-off aberration. :barscarf:

Striker is not the problem.

G88ner highlights the wealth of talent on display, plus we have -

Nacer Barazite on loan - he looks very promising and similar to Vela but a bit mroe direct

Jay Simpson in reserves. He may yet make an impact, he looks very good at that level and at 19 is still developing. Good of the ball runs.

Gilles Sunnu - only 17 but bags of pace.

Luke Freeman - younger than Sunnu but highly rated.

I think the biggest priority is a top, top class goalie or we have to hope that Almunia becomes world class for a seaon.

Up front, we're fine, so long as van Persie stays fit and Eduardo makes his return as soon as poss. As gooner.ed says, the problems are at DM and to a certain extent at CB. But we've got to live with what we've got now.

Just a point of detail: Kyiv isn't cold in September, in fact it will likely be warmer than London. I was there last week, and it was definitely t-shirts and shorts weather.
