METALLICAAAAAAAAAA
even Nas these days has mellowed but lets face it every genre goes through different stages of development, dont forget even Obie Trice sold his soul. While i love eminen (commercial shite) i also still love some of the old ones.gas_face_gooner wrote:there is still good hip hop there but very little (especially when it comes to commercial acts) Nas is the only commercial rapper with any quality output.

I saw Snoop Dogg in concert in july and to be honest he was awesome. He put on a good show and the live band he had playing his music was incredible. I grew a lot of respect for him after seeing his show.SCREAM AIM FIRE wrote:good hip hop (hate them words) died with 2pac & biggie, everyone got scared after they got killedxDAVEYx wrote:with every genre and style you have to dig deep to find quality as big labels and distributors will only back stuff that will sell, whether its any good or not is immaterial.SCREAM AIM FIRE wrote:as for whoever said hip hops good...how can you call a person who takes someone elses song and puts shit lyrics about having money over the top good?

new slipknot album is good, however i think slipknot should have stuck to their brutal guns instead of turning into stone sour with masks and 3 pointless members

Sorry, but as a rock/metal guitarist I have to pull you up on that one; the word is "riff"...EL-Z wrote:giving the new album a listen and gotta say quite impressed so far. much better than st anger which you got the impression didnt even try whereas theres alot of work on instrumental issues on this one. Feels alot more complex. Rifts are alot more complex than that frantic shite from st anger

Right, for Metallica fans only, some feedback on your welcome suggestions of best tunes to try out. Please don’t take it personally if I don’t like one of your faves!
Memory Remains – Decent tune. Use of Marianne Faithful inspired
Enter Sandman – Epic stuff
The Ecstacy of Gold (cover) – Instrumental from the start of the ‘S&M’ concert. Not strictly Metallica, but love this. Will download the rest of the album as a result.
Harvester of Sorrow – Bog standard late 70s/80s metal. Turgid. No wonder teenagers start taking guns to school to terminate their classmates’ lives if they listen to this repeatedly.
Master of Puppets – Slight improvement on the above, but I am still seeing spandex trousers in my mind. Does anyone remember ‘Sounds’? Might keep this one on the i-pod as a representative of what I suspect are the earlier years. There is at least the hint of variety in the tune and some welcome chord changes to spice things up.
Sad But True – Just sad. Metal plodder. My life will be enriched by never hearing this again.
Battery –Nice brief solo a short way in, but I can live without this quite easily. I am beginning to remember why I could never sit through a concert of theirs on the box. There are hints of a tune trying to break out in the middle of this one, but it remains incarcerated. Mercifully short.
The Unforgiven – Relief. An actual undisputable tune. Can see this one being done at the S&M concert. Much better. Probably sails a bit close to Bon Jovi, but after what my ears have just been through, that counts as sanctuary.
For Whom The Bell Tolls – Better metal. Rainbow used to turn out the decent odd number, although some of them went on a bit. Puts me in mind of them around the time when they had Ronnie James Dio as their frontman. Not convinced this will survive the i-pod cull though. Life’s too short.
I Disappear – Actually might not. Like this one a bit more. (Three minutes later) Changed my mind. The lack of variety as it went on has killed it.
One – Always gives it more of a chance when there’s a bit of a chilled start. Yeah. Like this enough to give it repeat listens, although I did start to lose interest near the end
(Welcome Home) Sanitarium – Think I can see how the hardcore Metallica audience could relate to this one… But still, decent enough. I am starting to see Spinal Tap though – good of Metallica to team up with them for that version of Big Bottom on Live Aid… (just looked for it on youtube and the copyright freaks seem to have prevented anyone posting footage. Oh well)
Fade to Black – Much more like it, although the longer it goes on, the worse it gets. Think it will just about survive, although if I was being critical, there’s an argument that a Metallica EP would suit my personal needs in terms of quality from their entire output. Nice guitar work salvages this one. The problem with metal is it’s so damn samey. And I speak as one who was into some of the bands about thirty years ago. Christ, in my mum’s attic somewhere, I think I have about the first 30 issues of ‘Kerrang!’ – probably used by mice to make nests about 15 years ago though…
Seek and Destroy – Predictable. It’s astonishing to think these guys have made so much money. It makes me appreciate Deep Purple so much more. I think a grounding in blues music is what sets the likes of Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple apart from a lot of what followed after those bands had their heyday. AC/DC were another quality band, but so much of what has followed really has no reason to exist. This is so formulaic. And to think Zane Lowe is going to have to be enthusiastic about these guys on Radio One this evening. Talk about selling out. I think I’ve heard too much metal in my time on this earth and I can tell the good from the bad. And the majority of it is bad. I did want to like these songs. Honest.
Four Horsemen – And people were trading this stuff on Napster? Just the hints of a tune, but the clichéd guitars kill it stone dead.
Nothing Else Matters – Credit where it’s due – if these guys put their mind to it, they can knock out an excellent song. Quality. Or at least, it seems that way compared to the majority of their output. This must have been played at ‘S&M’ as well. Can see the orchestra going full pelt on this one.
Whiskey In The Jar (cover) – Salvation. It is almost impossible to go wrong with a Thin Lizzy cover. RIP Phil Lynott.
Creeping Death – A return to (bad) form. Will be deleted without the slightest hint of remorse. And it’ll be instant not creeping.
Blackened – The end is in sight. I can honestly say I gave these boys a go. Another track bites the i-pod dust. I can’t doubt their ability to knock out a complex guitar solo, just the ability to make me want to hear it more than once.
Metal Militia – Fast and furious intro. Hint that this could be half decent until the vocals kick in. Did you know headbanging is not condusive to good mental health? Don’t do it, and if you must, at least do it to something worth it. Try the Velvet Underground ‘Live 1969’ and ‘Rock’n’Roll’ – I can’t stop nodding my head to that one in a fashion that I am sure isn’t doing my cranium a single favour, but hey, it’s the Velvet Underground, which justifies the mental fallout.
And Justice For All – The eternal optimist, I am hoping this last one will be a goodie. And it starts with some acoustic plucking which is always encouraging where Metallica are concerned. There are some listenable bits, but it’s too much of a grind. I can’t salvage this one with the best will in the world.
So as much as for my own reference as anything, I will keep the following out of the suggested 21 songs on my i-pod.
Memory Remains
Enter Sandman
The Ecstacy of Gold (cover)
Master of Puppets
The Unforgiven
One
(Welcome Home) Sanitarium
Fade to Black
Nothing Else Matters
Whiskey In The Jar (cover)
That’s ten out of 21 – not bad (albeit including two covers).
And I will download the ‘S&M’ album, as I think the discipline of having to play with an orchestra should cut out the worst excesses.
Many thanks for all suggestions. I will listen to the Radio One thing this evening out of curiosity. Now, just got to find that Foo Fighters thread and do the same as I’ve done with Metallica. If anyone stumbles across the url for that one, PM me – think we are going back to late spring/early summer.

Fairly good analysis there Kev. Unbelievably The Unforgiven is NOT on S&M. Bizarre. If ever a song suited the full orchestration treatment that was it. And there is still a good bit of excess on S&M...
Keep an eye (ear) out for Hero of the Day on S&M. Great version.
Just bought the new album "Death Magnetic" and it is quality. Some great stuff on it.
Big Lizzy fan too? Love them.
