When I used to work in the players lounge, I knew a few people who worked behind the food kiosks at Highbury. They stop serving food and drink a certain amount of time before kick off to make sure that people are in their seats and that the gangways a clear so that people who are late can get to their seats. Basically, it's to stop congestion. That was the rule at Highbury, but I don't know about the Grove.
As for not being allowed beer in the stands, that's a rule that applies to all football grounds in the Premier League (maybe down the divisions - I'm not sure). The rule is that you're not allowed to consume alcohol in sight of the pitch. This rule even applies to those in Club Level. They've got to have their beers in their box with the curtain drawn! I shit you not. The thinking behind it, is that football fans + beer + things not going their way on the pitch = violence.
Make of that what you will.

Had the same problem AFTER the DB10 testimonial queued up for a beer only for the law to lean across in front of me to stop the guy behind the bar from serving, altho I managed to get one anywaystearmaster wrote:i understand pitchside, but to stop serving is pathetic.

I asked the Bill what was wrong and he said that drinkin times depended on whether or not it was an FA sanctioned match and they weren't sure so they erred on the side of "safety"
