Arsenal’s weekend of promise and frustration (30/7)

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Arsenal’s weekend of promise and frustration (30/7)

Usual thread starter. Would you like to see the Emirates Cup take place every season? My take on Wenger’s approach to pre-season is that I am glad he is not knackering out the players in the far east as Man United do, and despite the need for revenue and building up the profile of the team, I am glad the board have resisted the commercial possibilities of July tours to far-flung places. Mind you, might that change with new owners…?

The Emirates Cup is a good idea in my opinion.

Wouldn't say no to a tour of Australia next year though. :D

As for training in south east asia, it can be a great idea if the players get time enough to rest afterwards. The Australian team for example were shedding the kilos after every training session for the asian cup there.

Mark Schwarzer lost 2kg playing in goal in a single match. The humidity etc, can get the players fit very quick so a week or two over there, followed by the rest in London could be useful in getting the players fit quickly.

Wenger will never allow us to tour the far east. He sees it as a waste of time & energy.
More likely to have a tour of the US with our rapids tie up, again an idea Wenger will not be keen on.
Re Emirates cup, i think it is good. friends of mine who seldom get tickets went had a good day, took the kids - all for a reasonable price against good oppo and got to see some of the new boys.
Keiran Gibbs looks a good prospect. Nice to see some of the fringe boys play & it must've done Flamini's chances and confidence the world of good.

All in all a good family football day out - keep it coming but, remember the MAkita tournament, we need quality opposition each year to keep people coming

What about a real madrid or barcelona, change inter to ac milan, and change psg to lyon how about that.

speaking of knocking them out we get petit and vieria back for that game and also have Diaby in the midfield.

I don't doubt that the Emirates Cup will become a regular feature. The fact that people were queueing to get in to both Club shops on both days indicates that there is real money to be made out of the people that only get to go to this type of event. I would estimate that they made over £1million in the shops alone at the weekend. Maybe we can sign a goalscorer now!

Yep...I take issue though with Gooner.ed who says the board have so far resisted the temptation of far flung tours. I am quite sure that given only a slight window of opportunity by the Boss then they would have jumped through. As we stand now, AW is grateful for some tough opposition at this time, because unlike his first eight years, we not only now have the start of the season but also a very important CL qualifier which he wants everyone ready for.

Just about the place to train in the offseason, how hot is it in Austria? What sort of temperatures do they get there?

Because Adebayor, Walcott and Rosicky suffering from the heat tends to make me think that it is hotter there than I originally thought. And Adebayor is African!

I think it was getting around 30-35 degrees for some of the days in that part of the world (South Eastern Germany/Austria) and can get pretty humid. Adebayor has now acclimatised to England and finds this a shock to the system.

I think the Emirates Cup should happen every year because it gave someone like me who rarely sees the gooners live saw some quality football. However perhaps getting some tougher opposition, as it seemed to me like we made this competition just so we could win it!!!

Then again more silverware in the cabinet
