How much would you move for???

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

How much would you move for???

Post by Boomer »

Question for you all,

A Job has come up internally, one which interests me.
Long term (very long) it could be beniefical only in the career sence. (not financially)

Although, there appears to be a bit more work invovled (I think all new jobs do!) the money is roughly the same. I've had my fingers burnt before moving companies soley to jump the pay scale but the stress was bad!!! :banghead: :(

I've spoke to the manager informally of the role and the current employee is on a £1k less then me. I'm happy in my current job it pays okay(ish) and I enjoy it.

So should I move? and if so how much more??

Its hard finding a job you enjoy, and, what you need to also be thinking is, will you get bored of the new job?

I can understand going to a new job for more money, but if there is a chance its the same amount or less than you are on then, i wouldnt move, unless you wasnt happy in your current job.

I was lucky i found a better job than my previous one, more money and i enjoy it plus less hours...

what ever move you make good luck

I took a paycut mate in my last move simply because I was unhappy and wanted a better quality of life. I had roughly 60 employess under me and life was hell. Now I have taken a small cut and have no one reporting to me....bliss. I have not had to speak with HR since I have been here.

So it all depends, a fine balance but you alone will only know if the move is right for you.

All the best!

There is a lot to be said for being happy at work but of course you need to balance that with your ambitions and your need for money. Only you can decide which takes precidence. Good luck working it out.

if ur enjoying what ur doin and can progress thru it stay. if movng is going to in the long term earn you mor money, its worth doing that one. at the end of the day, its what suits you best, and you need to work out (if you havent already) your 'career path' or future, and which one is going to have more of an impact. if neither are going to change how much you earn or progress, id stick with the one youve got.

If it is for an improvement in long term career prospects, then it is worth taking a small pay cut (though by all means why not try to negotitate transferring your current salary to the new job?).

Main thing though is job security.

In this economic climate, well worth going for the job that makes you most employable and would be least likely to be cut should your company need to make job cuts.

Thanks for the input Guys & Gals.

I'm now fair happier here (company wise) then I was at previous companies so I know the difference.

Problem is there being vague on the money. Firstly it's never advertised so I had to ask in the 'informal' chat. The money the current guy who's leaving (He's moving country) is at the bottom of the scale they've quoted. I'm a grand better then him at the mo but the top end is only £2K more then me. :?
(All based on Skills & experience)

I'm unsure. Problem is I don't want to apply and be interviewed to then be told 'X is what your worth' which is only £100 more. (for example)

It's worth mentioning that I've a child (& somes time a wife) to support so the extra income would be worth while! Which at the mo is stretching it a bit.

I made a huge career change in 2004. I went from a very highly paid job as a site manager in construction to the civil service. It cut my wages roughly in half but increased my benefits like pension, medical etc. But the main thing was the stress in my old job was killing me. I worked for my old man and he had a stress related stroke in 2003 (as a healthy 58 year old). That's what made my mind up. I wasn't letting that happen to me.

The pay cut was hard to absorb (luckily I've gotten two good promotions since and I'm back near where I was financially). But the main thing is the stress is so much less. The current job is high pressure and stressful but I can leave it in the office, I'm not bringing it home with me like when I worked for my Dad.

So my advice is think less about the money and ask yourself which job will give you the most satisfaction for the least ammount of stress.

I honestly wish I had made the career change years ago. 8)

Probably quite nice for your HR department too

You spend more time at work than home so you have to be happy.
I'm currently trying to move as well. I have a second interview on Thursday whereby I have to produce a powerpoint presentation on effective KPI's and Cost reduction incentives. I only found out last night that I have to do it.
If I'm successful then the job will be a good one. I'll be purchasing for the high street clothing retail market. FMCG is the place to be. :D

i'm in the non fun position of being into forced movement in my job as was made redundant yesterday....took the job in july so feeling quite peed at my manager as they were aware the compant was in trouble when they employed me!

but the positive side is i've got an interview tomorrow and other opportunities lined up that may work out better for me, im looking into taking a pay cut on my main salary and getting a p/t job to boost my income as the role is better for my future prospects...so i guess im saying id take a paycut for career progression as the long term gains may outweigh short term pain
