Dein - The Raven at Arsenal’s Tower of London? (1/8)

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

I CERTAINLY COULD DO THAT CUS, BUT THEN IT WOULDN'T REALLY BE ME, WOULD IT? I SINCERELY APOLOGISE IF IT IS 'DOING YOUR HEAD IN' - THAT IS NOT MY INTENTION. HOWEVER, EVERYONE KNOWS IHH WORKS WITH HIS CAPS ON!!

I WROTE:
FROM MY ELEMENTARY KNOWLEDGE OF MATHS 83 - 10 = 73!! THUS THE DECADE BEFORE DEIN CAME ON BOARD COMMENCED IN 1973 NOT 1968!!
Well pal if your gonna nit pick.......
ONE MAN'S NIT-PICKING IS ANOTHER MAN'S STATING THE FACTS!!
..As for the Everton comparison, you neglect to point out that they have won one trophy in two decades. This may be comparable to Arsenal in 1953-71, it is not comparable to Arsenal in the 70s and early 80s.
SO CUS, WINNING ONE F.A. CUP FROM 1972 -1987 IS NOT EQUALLY COMPARABLE? YOU SEE, IT ALL DEPENDS ON WHERE YOU WANT TO START. WE CAN ALL BE SELECTIVE TO SUIT OUR PARTICULAR ARGUMENT!
Ask today's supporters of big supported sides like Everton, Spuds or Man City if they'll think that's the end of the world.
MAYBE NOT, BUT WE ARE BIGGER AND BETTER THAN THOSE CLUBS NOWADAYS - THANKS IN LARGE PART TO DAVID DEIN!! SO IF ANYTHING, YOU HAVE HELPED MAKE MY POINT!!

I'm suspecting that Dein was instrumental and wanted Venables and had no intention of bringing in George Graham and cannot take the credit for his appointment, as was suggested by IHH.
AND SUBSEQUENTLY WITHDRAWN BY ME IN AN EARLIER POST, AFTER I HAD LOOKED IT UP IN GEROGE'S BOOK!! BUT THEN AGAIN, AS ALSO MENTIONED EARLIER, IT WAS VENABLES THAT SUGGESTED GRAHAM, NOT ANYONE ELSE ON THE ARSENAL BOARD!!
Personally I think this is more accident than design.
BLOODY HELL!! YOU DON'T WANT TO GIVE DEIN CREDIT FOR ANYTHING GOOD THAT'S HAPPENED AT ALL, DO YOU?
..Wenger had achieved great things by standing on the shoulder of giants..
IT GETS WORSE!! YOU'RE NOW DENYING WENGER'S GREATNESS AS WELL!! SUPPOSE THAT UNBEATEN TEAM WAS DOWN TO GEORGE GRAHAM THEN?
..Also note that it was incredibly lucky that the next footballing genius was in the place that many a self made millionaire hangs out, in Monaco. This is not like discovering Shankly at (de)Preston North End or Ferguson at East Stirlingshire is it folks?
THIS IS NOW BECOMING HILARIOUS!! YOU ARE HAVING A POP AT DEIN FOR NOT DISCOVERING WENGER IN SOME NORTHERN HELL-HOLE!! MY ADVICE TO YOU CUS IS THIS: WHEN IN A HOLE - STOP DIGGING!!!

AS FOR THE FACTS - AND I KNOW YOU DON'T LIKE THE FACTS TO GET IN THE WAY OF A GOOD RANT - DEIN FIRST MET ARSENE WENGER AT HIGHBURY WHEN THE FRENCHMAN WAS TAKING IN A GAME WHILST IN THIS COUNTRY WITH HIS TEAM. DEIN INVITED WENGER OUT TO DINNER THAT EVENING AND THEY GOT ON FAMOUSLY.

WHEN THE MANAGER'S POSITION BECAME AVAILABLE AT ARSENAL, AFTER (OR WAS THAT DURING   ) BRUCE RIOCH'S SHORT TENURE, DEIN PROPOSED ARSENE TO THE BOARD AND WENGER WAS GIVEN THE JOB. THE REST, AS THEY SAY, IS HISTORY!!

SURELY DAVID DEIN DESERVES A LITTLE CREDIT FOR THAT, IF NOTHING ELSE IN YOUR EYES?

Cus Geezer wrote:May I also note that sneering at the board of the 70s and early 80s in wanting to keep that club stable and lacking ambition is an incredibly cheap shot. Especially when taking into account that this was not a period in which Sky was throwing money around.
AND WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT DEIN IN ALMOST ALL YOUR POSTS, ESPECIALLY THE SELF-MADE MILLIONAIRE KNOCKING ABOUT IN MONACO JIBE, WASN'T? ESPECIALLY WHEN YOUR POINT ABOUT IT WAS WRONG!!

AND WHY DO YOU THINK SKY GOT INVOLVED IN THE FIRST PLACE? BECAUSE THE LIKES OF DEIN WERE BEGINNING TO DO BIGGER AND MORE EXCLUSIVE FINANCIAL T.V. DEALS WITH ITV!!

SKY COULD SEE THAT FOOTBALL ON ITV WERE GETTING THE AUDIENCES IN SO WANTED A PIECE OF THE ACTION TO HELP GAIN AUDIENCES FOR THEIR FLEDGLING SATELLITE STATIONS!!

CUS, MY FELLOW GOONER, I SAY THIS WITH ALL DUE RESPECT TO YOUR GOOD SELF. I DON'T NEED A HISTORY LESSON ON THE SEVENTIES AND EIGHTIES - I LIVED THROUGH THAT PERIOD AND KNOW EXACTLY WHAT WENT ON BOTH ON AND OFF THE TERRACES!!

ANYWAY, IT'S BEEN A GOOD DEBATE!!

Firstly can I make a polite request for IHH to turn off his caps lock because it's doing my head in.
Can't do that Cus, that would make IHH impotent!

No ITV were pushed into that because BSB turned up bidding, by 1988 they'd learned that the days of the cartel wouldn't work anymore.

CUS,

ON THAT POINT, I WAS WRONG AND YOU ARE 100% RIGHT. 8) ALTHOUGH DEIN WAS INVOLVED IN HELPING THEM AND ITV DID INDEED WIN THE FIRST EXCLUSIVE CONTRACT, IT WAS IN COMPETITION WITH BSKYB. I STAND CORRECTED, MY FRIEND!!

Unfortunately, I am not in your kingdom (!!) to be able to pick up Sky. In fact, I don't have a TV!!

Am wary of trying out something new as don't want to waste all my time hooked on something new! Have pretty much done the same as you with The Simpsons - don't know I can handle South Park as well! Does it come in baggies or by the ounce??

No I'm no more attributing Wenger's success to someone else than Isaac Newton was attributing his own achievements to someone else.

The fact is that a very important element of Wenger's double side was entirely built by George Graham, the defence. There is no doubt that Wenger would have been success in the Premiership but having such a solid and dependable back five hastened that process by at least 2/3 years if Wenger had to build that side from scratch.

Let's not forget that they were so good at what they did that in 1998/99 they only conceded 17 goals, they second lowest amount in history at the time and we didn't even win the league.

4/5ths of that unit were still there by the 2nd double, Keown had only left in 2004 so was around at the time of the invincibles. Although they were almost entirely gone by the time of the invincibles, they must have had a big influence on younger players coming through. I'd be surprised if Cashley Hole or Kolo Toure learned nothing from WInterburn, Dixon or Keown. I'd be surprised if Vieira didn't learn any leadership skills from Adams.

And also with regards to the board of the 1970s lacking ambition, it depends on how you define 'ambition'.

Arsenal showed no lack of ambition when they signed Alan Ball for a record transfer fee in 1971 and he did turn out to be one of our best ever players, yet he came in on a high wage and lead to several other 1st teamers demanding the same and leaving when they didn't get it, hence the mid-70s dearth.
