Invincibles’ break-up a positive thing (2/8)

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Invincibles’ break-up a positive thing (2/8)

Usual thread starter – I guess there is a certain logic in this, and I too am looking forward to the season ahead. However, a little bit of me fears the wheels coming off in the last two months of the campaign. We’ll see.

You're not the only one, I'm amazingly excited about the season ahead. I don't think expecting qualification for the champions league should be considered ambitious though, I want the title. Or as Arsene says, to expect us to be there fighting for it. No team can guarantee winning it, but I'm convinced we'll be in with a chance.

I agree with your reasoning to a degree, as in, the formal break-up of the invincibles has been a good thing for this new team, but not in terms of shadows being cast and what not, don't really believe any of that.
Henry's shadow wasn't the problem, it was hit fitness, age and ego. We've got rid of too many of the invincibles a year or more too late - Henry, Pires, Vieira, Campbell, Llungberg.

Whilst there were senior pro's at the club, Arsene played them, out of respect for those players, he does everything with honour, he wouldn't humiliate those guys. Now he has got rid of them all, he is free to unleash all of our young talent.

I am excited about the season i know everyone keeps saying can we last the whole season or will we drop off towards the end of it but i trully believe that if we can keep our injurys to a minimum then we can and we will last season was hard because there was allways a key player injurd, i don't think we had a fully fit squad at all last season.
on sunday we played a team that looked good but still wasn't our best squad.
If we take a month at a time and just ignor the lure of the end of season fixtures and cup runs and just consentrate on easch game as it come we might just suprise a few people.

Anyways on saturday we should get our next silverwere
Hopefully see Eduardo and see how Arsene will use him. :D

certainly think that this season has potential to be a top one however although it can be agreed that wer probably ok without titi i do think that players such as campbell viera edu and pires were got rid of too quickly. Bobby and sol especially. Look at the americans, sorry i mean mancs  - they have people like giggs  g neville  scholes  who although they are all terrible *word censored* those players have been able to keep performing into their advanced years and have changed their game (giggs mainly) as theyve aged to suit the side

i love the raw talent and promise this Arsenal squad has but still think that it wouldent have been a bad thing for some of those invincibles to have ended their careers with the club, or at least hung around for a bit longer to tide us over for the last 2 fallow years

they wouldent have had to be first team regulars, but their experience would have been invaluble for the youngsters to have around and to look up to and its not like we have got a solid left winger worth 10+ goals a season or a highly experienced centre back whos good in the air to partner kolo

Anyway no need for all that cause theyv all left and at last this team is ready to challenge for the title again, pity it took so long....

Greetings! I'm a newbie on this forum. I live in Vancouver, Canada and I've been an Arsenal fan all my life. I even went to London twice last year to try to watch a game at Ashburton but no luck! I'm hoping to befriend someone on this forum so I can catch a game they can't go to or something! Wishful thinking but all I can do at this point is hope.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand.

I agree with GoonerBen when he mentions that Pires and Sol were let go of too early in their career (although I think I'd add Viera to that list as well). I think we can all agree that Henry and Ljungberg are past their prime due to injuries or attitude. I've noticed that everybody is worried aobut how we will cope without Henry and I don't have to remind anybody about the fact that he didn't play for half the season due to injury but I truly believe that if Van 'the man' Persie were not injured, we would've been challenging if not ManU for first, atleast Chelsea for second.

I'd ask you all to ponder the flip side of Henry leaving. I will be following La Liga closely this season to see how Henry performs in Barca and whether he'll even be healthy for the whole season. I believe at the end of the season, regardless of where we finish in the Prem, seeing Henry's performance (or absence) in Barca, we won't be wondering "what if Henry were still around?" and that on it's own should lay to rest any speculation about whether letting Henry go was a good move or not.

Having said that, I hope Henry does well in Barca because he served us well and was classy enough to leave on a good note.

I'm confident for this season.

I think the title would be a bridge too far, but I expect that we would get the top four finish a lot more comfortably this season and probably a final in one of the cups.

A good Champions League run also hopefully.

A lot more confident after the pre-season. Bendtner scoring a few including one from a corner on saturday, Eduardo getting one with his head. Two things I was moaning about last season and it looks like these two could go someway to amending that.

Arsene does indeed 'know'.

Does having all these people on the forum from the US, Canada and Aus mean we have to start sleeping during the day? I'm all for that that!

I agree Pires was let go too early but Sol and Paddy are different cases. Sol wanted to get away for personal reasons and I still firmly believe the information that came out around the time regarding Paddy. His physical state had been assessed and it was determined that he would not be able to meet anywhere near his high standard over a long English season. Whether a less than formidable Paddy is still better than no Paddy is another question.

I wish Henry well but won't be following La Liga - following the Arsenal is more than enough mental stress.

And if you want to look out for possible tickets, look on the for sale part of the site. Something might come up during the season.

Galasso - thanks for the tip! Not sure what you meant by the comment about sleeping during the day ?

One of the things Henry mentioned was that he was upset about the sale of Viera. That's when a manager has to choose between keeping up teem morale or getting rid of a player that won't be up for the challenge of a lengthy season. I'm not suggesting it's the reason Henry left but obviously it had an effect in the locker room which along with other things led to our recent semi-drought of trophies.

That's why, as the article says, it was important for the Invincibles to move on.

As for the team wearing out during the course of the season, AW has said he could buy two more players. It's cutting close to the start but hopefully he does. We won't know till it happens so we can just watch and wait.

That's about the size of it!

With Aussies, Canadians, Americans, Indians and Irish all in different time zones, I don't know which way to turn...

I am going to try and program my computer so that when I am asleep, it sends regular messages to this forum on different topics. I just hope that I get lucky and one of my messages actually matches a current discussion!

To be safe, I think the subjects tits or centre forwards and I am just about covered!

well covered at left back

how comfortable do we look at left back? clichy and traore are both fantastic going forward. bit to learn at the other end can even play clichy left midfield.

Thanks for the welcome!

U.F.G Anfield '89 - there were plenty of gooners a few years ago when we won the double but now I seem to be surrounded by ManU and Chelsea fans. Mostly bandwagon jumpers that I meet but I'm sure there are some around. I just haven't met them yet. In fact, last year in my endless search for tickets I met someone who lives in Seattle and ended up meeting up at the Gunner pub to watch the game we couldn't get tickets to (Arsenal v. Everton 1-1 thanks to v.Persie's brilliant free kick).

Galasso - I happen to be an Indian living in Canada. Just thought I'd confuse you further!

After watching the brilliant runs by Clichy in the Lazio game, I think we're well covered in that position. Right back is covered thanks to Eboue and Sagna. The only concern I'd have is down the middle but hopefully Senderos has a consistent season.

Our first team can win any game at any time in any stadium. The only worry I have is in overall depth for player rotation, injuries or international duties. I mentioned it before and I say it again -- hopefully AW signs the two players he says he might want.
