best foul ever by an arsenal player

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Right up until Sir Gilles did the decent thing to the spud dwarf it was Willie Young for me too.

But to stop a spud scoring the first ever goal at our new home and thus avoiding 100 years bad luck????

Mr Grimandi, you sir, are a gentleman. 8)

And a God...

Paul Davis when he broke Glenn Cockrell"s jaw.Normally a mild mannered player he threw the best left hand at Highbury since Enery"s hammer v Muhammed Ali in 1966.

Any one with the name Cockrell needs a good slap.

Paul Davis we salute you.

I remember a beauty from Ray Parlour in a Champs Lge group match against Lens at Wembley.
If memory serves, we needed to win to avoid going out and with a couple of mins left Lens were 1-0 up and it was a bit much for our Ray who just scythed down one of their players near the touchline!

I was at the game when Davis did cockrell but didnt see it till i got home and it was all over the TV. His jaw was wired up for 6-8 weeks if i remember rightly.

The great thing about the Paul Davis incident was we were two nil down at the time, because of the Cockrell injury the ref added 7 mins injury time in which we scored two goals to draw 2-2. That point proved vital because we won the league on goal difference in 89.So that left hander helped us to win the league.

I was on the North Bank to see Smith's equaliser but also didn't see it. I am beginning to understand Arsene a bit more now...

Didn't Cockerill do a very nasty tackle on Davis earlier that the ref didnt punish. Was punished in the end tho!

There were rumours that Cockrell had racially abused Davis but Davis and Arsenal never commented on it so i dont think we ever found out why Davis punched him, was very out of character for him though. He got banned for 8 matches i think.

Totally agree, plus i'm all for him being known as Sir Gilles from now for that tacle alone, being one of the most important moments in our history!!

So judging by responses it's...

1) Sir Gilles
2) Willie Young
3) Paul Davis

It's got to be Willie Young at the 1980 cup final, my one good memory of an awful, awful day. Living in Essex it was hell, wot wiv all the Ammers ere  but fortunately I stayed at a mates in Edmonton after the game so did'nt have to travel back with em and who cared anyway coz the following monday we were all off to Brussels to win the cup winners cup, or maybe not :( So thanks Mr Young, you'll always be a legend in my eyes
