The Sunday Mirror is sometimes way off the mark, but Steve Stammers has fairly close links to the club so maybe there is something in this story of us trying to buy two older players?
Arsenal target proven stars Vincenzo Iaquinta and Daniele De Rossi in January
By Steve Stammers, sundaymirror.co.uk 9/11/2008
Arsenal have adopted a new scouting policy as manager Arsene Wenger looks to bolster his squad when the transfer window opens in January.
Rather than concentrate on emerging young talent, Wenger wants to bring in men who are proven at the highest level.
On his current list of targets are Juventus striker Vincenzo Iaquinta and Roma midfield player Daniele De Rossi.
Iaquinta will be 29 this month and is an Italian international.
De Rossi is also a member of the Azzurri squad and though still only 25, has won more than 30 caps.
Though not a prolific scorer, Iaquinta has shown he can compete with the best and would be an ideal addition to the Arsenal strike force.
Wenger would have noted that De Rossi was outstanding against Chelsea in Roma's 3-1 win in the Champions League last Tuesday.
His problem is that both clubs are still involved in the Champions League and will be reluctant to let prize assets leave while they still have the chance of European glory.
But Wenger is determined to revive a season that promised so much and he has been assured that funds will be available.

The Daily Mail reckon:
Gunners wait on prospect Sergio Busquets as he stalls on new contract at Barcelona
By Sportsmail Reporter Last updated at 5:27 PM on 12th November 2008
Arsenal are set to make a move for Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets if he fails to agree a new contract at the Nou Camp.
Busquets, 20, is regarded as one of the best young midfielders in Europe and has broken into the Barcelona first team this season.
The Spaniard has progressed through the ranks at Nou Camp but is out of contract at the end of the season and is attracting interest from a host of clubs in England and Italy.
After seeing Mathieu Flamini and Alexander Hleb leave the club during the summer, Wenger is keen to strengthen his midfield and would jump at the chance to sign another talented youngster.
Barcelona have offered a new deal to Busquets but he has yet to pledge his long-term future to the club which could spark a fierce battle for his signature in the New Year.

i agree with augie tho, de rossi would be good!!
No one believes that we are seriously interested in signing all these players, but it is interesting to see who's name crops up and how frequently.
Similar thread on the summer transfer window extablished that we were linked with 106 players by the media (well, that is how many the members of this site counted).

Two familiar names from the summer crop up on this story from Premiershiplatest.com
plus a familiar name of late who has got himself a new job.
Comoli To Fight Arsenal Double Swoop
Submitted by Jake Briggs on Fri, 2008-11-14
Arsenal will face a fight from St Etienne’s new sporting director Damien Comoli for Les Verts pair Blaise Matuidi and Mouhamaou Dabo in January after the former Tottenham Hotspur director revealed that he intends to keep the pair at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger had reportedly been on the verge of signing 21-year-old Matuidi just before the transfer window shut in the summer, but Matiudi’s, transfer was blocked by the French club, with the former Troyes player staying at the Ligue 1 side.
This was despite the French Under-21 International declaring an interest in leaving St Etienne for the Emirates Stadium.

Channel4.com reckons:
Gunners eye Felipe Melo
Saturday 15 November, 2008
After failing to snap up Sebastian Giovinco, Arsenal are now said to be hot on the heels of Fiorentina’s Felipe Melo.
The Gunners are evidently keeping a close eye on Serie A’s young talent, as in recent months they have been heavily linked with bids for Juventus starlet Giovinco and Udinese’s Swiss sensation Gokhan Inler.
The latest midfielder they are eager to capture is Brazilian Felipe Melo, who has impressed since joining from Almeria in the summer.
The Gazzetta dello Sport claims that Arsenal sent scouts to watch the 25-year-old in the Champions League match with Bayern Munich on November 5.
The reports also state that Fiorentina have no intention of selling Felipe Melo, who has quickly become a fan favourite.
They paid £5m for the player and tied him to a contract until June 2013.
The Mirror pontificates:
Arsenal set to launch raid on Cardiff for Joe Ledley - Exclusive
by Rory Smith, sundaymirror.co.uk 16/11/2008
Arsenal are preparing to launch a £6million January swoop for Cardiff starlet Joe Ledley.
Scouts have been tracking the left-sided midfielder since the start of the season and Arsene Wenger is ready to launch a second raid in six months on the Bluebirds as soon as the transfer window opens.
The Arsenal boss needs to strengthen his midfield because of the succession of injuries suffered by Czech star Tomas Rosicky. That has left Wenger desperately short of cover on the left flank, with just Abou Diaby to slot in for Samir Nasri.
Wenger could face competition for the 21-year-old from Tottenham and Everton, but the Frenchman believes his good relationship with Cardiff - after this summer's transfer of Aaron Ramsey - could swing the deal.
The Daily Star regurgitates a summer linkage:
North London rivals Spurs and Arsenal are both chasing Werder Bremen's midfield ace Diego.
