Usual thread starter. Am I being overly-critical? I just felt we allowed the visitors too many clear cut chances and that this could prove very expensive against better opposition.

Eduardo

Post by Desert_Gooner »

Eduardo is injured so he wasn't on the bench as far as I know, same for Adebayor.

However, I hope Wenger sees that Bendtner and RvP can be a useful partnership up front, and plays a midfield of Hleb/Fab/Diaby/Flamini which should give us the right combination of creativity and steel.
We'll need it against Prague.

4-4-1-1 at home to Fulham says it all. We were playing Fulham at home not Barcelona away. The defence has not improved on its defending of set pieces and balls into the box.I have been banging on all summer about buying a centre half how can head a ball, yesterday proved nothing has changed.Playing Eboue the failed full back on the right of midfield is a cop out.We should have gone all out to get Ribery.
Flamini should only play if we have injuries he doesn"t have enough quality.Would he get in the Manure,Chelski and Liverpool first eleven,Dont make me laugh.
I felt sorry for RVP he needs another partner too play up beside him to get the best out of him. Is Helb the answer? Wenger has got to make the decesion to play either Helb or Rosicky but not both,
If the Fulham game is anything to go by its going to be a long hard season.

Don't agree with much you've written there Kevin. As Martin Samual writes in The Times today, the Arsenal fans need to start being a bit more appreciative of what's being put out in front of them. This constant down-hearted approach is contrary to the talent of the team, and contrary to the efforts being made on the pitch. When are the fans going to start getting behind this team?, perhaps when a few of the blogs starting doing likewise. Arsenal fans have become a right bunch of spoilt bastards. They want the best young players, the best experienced players, 8 goals a game, intricate football, shots from 80 yards, £80m spent on players each summer and great team spirit.

Yes it was a similar story to last season, but that's not so bad, we played great football last season, and great football yesterday. Is it hard to break teams down who are determine to get something?, damned right it's hard! Take a look at Sunderland and Reading this weekend. Despite the way the goals were scored, the team worked their socks off for 90 minutes and played some good stuff. It didn't just start in the last 10 minutes like you suggest, that's a lie, no, that's when we started scoring. Too many fans look at goals, and only goals. Yes, if we score 5 goals, then they say we worked bloody hard and were really on top of our game, if you only score 1, we were crap and lazy. It's just not the way football works.

Hleb should have been off you say, a nice muttered compliment about his goal. Get a grip, by most people's reckoning he was our man of the match yesterday, and scored a good goal, like all the fans have been asking of him, still that's not enough. Praise where praise is due please.

Great fightback from the team, worked themselves into the ground and got their just deserts, but even if we'd lost, I wouldn't have been too down, you can't legislate for goalkeeping like that, if Van De Sar had done that for United yesterday, they'd have lost. These mistakes are easily cut out. The team needs to improve from game to game to do that, and that starts with some positive encouragement from the fans. Right now, it feels like the "fans" are more interested in the team failing, so determined are they that Wenger be shown to be wrong for his morally correct transfer strategy.

you mentioned that Fulham have not spent much , infact they have spent approx 28 million pounds , after player sales their net spending is still 20 million pounds . we on the other hand have taken thriftyness to a new level and have actually made 10 million approx after player sales - purchses .

we can laugh at the massive sums that manure have spent , but its because of that they can lose a player like rooney for 2 + months and have a similar replacement on standby ( Tevez) . i know that if we lost Van the man for a similar time , north london would be ravaged in a flood of tears .

Agree the 4-4-1-1 was the cause of the problems yesterday.
Theres no point in having wingers if u havent anyone in the box.

Alos if teams know u are only playing 1 striker up front ,opposing teams will systematically kick lumps out of them as Fulham did yesterday.

All changed went Bendtner came on and suddenly we sprang to life.

All in all im happy and I thought the atmosphere was OK too.

Didnt hear anyone singing the Edelman anthem though !

What was very disturbing from the start was the fact that we were playing one up front against Fulham at home! Wenger has already stated that (in his opinion) Bendter isn't ready but in truth, when he came on against Fulham he really changed the game for us and won everything in the air and proved troublesome in the box. We have such a weak squad, except for midfield where we have Denilson and Diaby to come in (not Flamini who is championship standard at best). Realistically we need two more good quality signings but we all know those won't happen. I think this year we have to be realistic and be prepared to drop an awful lot of points. The only saving grace is that despite spending 50 odd million, Spurs are as bas as ever!!

Against Fulham I too was pulling my hair out - but managed to keep the faith. The reason I was able to do so was that was
1 Both Hleb and Rosicky had shots on target
2 We ere creating chances
3 Warner in goal was playing a blinder
4 We'd had a couple of decent shouts for penalties
5 I don't think our current team understand the concept of quitting.
6 We were not doing it but no one as I recall threw a moody, they believed in themselves. quite justifably in the end.

Yes it was only Fulham, yes they are relegation fodder but lets put it in context. United threw the kitchen sink at Reading and failed. The Chavs only scraped how against Brum. Only Newcastle and City won by two clear goals on the opening day and Toon required a deflected goal to do that. Most Premiership games will be decided by the odd goal this season I feel so if we can play fairly crap and win I can live with that.

What worries me is that we fielded a team of half-pints and that playing 4-4-1-1 will mean we won't be scoring until AW is forced to throw in the kitchen sink late on.

I think we have to remember that it was the 1st game of the season, it's no more an indicator of our title hopes than people saying United have a serious setback for failing to beat Reading.

I'd like to see how we fare with Eduardo in the side.

And I'm also pleased that more players were getting their heads to corners than last season. An inability to score from corners meant we bagged ten goals less than we should have last season.

Hopefully we'll be hitting our stride by the end of September.

No one likes seeing their team lose but to think of leaving 15 minutes before the end ? Can you imagine what the players must think seeing all the people getting up and leaving their seats. That should be the time in the match when we are even more vocal trying to help get them back in the game not fucking off ! and I hate losing to anyone!

fulham spent £25 million on players. not exactly a measly amount. they had a good few players out there tryin to prove themselves and had a few chances on the counter like you would expect from most prem teams.
Agree with some the other comments, good 2 see the midfielders shooting (hopefully cesc fab and hleb wont get 2 greedy in oorder 2 win their bet) and arsenal actually going behind and winning.
Our squad might look short with 2 strikers out but united having a good whinge cause rooneys out and they have to bring back tevez early. I know they still have tevez but if they rush him and he gets crocked they wont look that formidable either. Only thing i didnt like bout yesterday isdont like to see flamini and cant wait for gilberto or even diaby to get a start back in there

Like ed, I too was despondent and almost wished Fulham had put us out of our misery when they had the chance(s). Nevertheless, like our ed always exhorts - but this time doesn't seem to have followed his own prompting - I kept the faith and was rewarded. I'll go too with Martin Samuels in the Times; even this young Arsenal team are exhilarating in full flow and for entertainment value yesterday's game takes a fair amount of beating. As for Mad Jens, well I guess I can laugh at it now - just, but at the time I couldn't believe it. Didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Maybe just embarrassed for the inevitable countless reruns on those awful programmes - you know the ones I mean. But now it's history, just another part of the matchday experience. And the late arrivals from the corporate bars missed it - we didn't.
