Story by Paul Meadows for FansFC:

Arsene Wenger is known to want to bolster his midfield in the New Year, something which has become more of a priority due to the injury to Cesc Fabregas.

Rumours in Italy claim the Frenchman is considering a move for former Chelsea star Samuele Dalla Bona, who is threatening to quit Napoli due to a lack of first team action.

It is being suggested that Wenger will make a move to loan the 27-year-old Dalla Bona for the rest of the season, with the view to a permanent summer transfer.

From Soccerlens.com - Eddie Griffin, Greg Ptolemy in Goal.com and The Daily Star:

Wenger has squashed speculation linking him to a bid for Robbie Keane[!!!!]

From J Sanderson on youngguns.wordpress.com

Arsenal will push through a deal to sign Fluminense striker Wellington in the New Year, Young Guns understands.

The 15-year-old starlet recently completed a 7 day trial with the Gunners, and after playing 45 minutes against Norwich Under 16’s last week, he left a massive impression on the coaching staff.

101greatgoals.com says John Ley in Daily Telegraph has linked us to Galatasary winger Arda Turan.

Fansfc.goal.com etc cast their net wide!

Regardless of how unlikely the rumours are I will post them here, just to compare who we actually buy with who we are linked with.

And undoubtidly when you cast your net wide you will always catch more shite than anything else. Anyway if wenger signed him I would have him (wenger) assasinated before the turn of the year

According to french newspaper footmercato.net, Arsene is looking to sign both A.Young and Gareth Barry. I believe it very unlikely...

French newspapers have us linked with a different player evey day. Hopefully Quartz you don't have to deal with other newspapers than the English one otherwise you would just spend your life on this thread...

ARSENE WENGER TARGETS TOON THREE

NOTW By MARTIN TAYLOR, 27/12/2008

What do you think?

ARSENE WENGER will start his radical transfer-window surgery with a three-pronged raid on Newcastle.

The Arsenal boss has targeted Toon trio Shay Given, Steven Taylor and Charles N’Zogbia in an attempt to fix the Gunners’ flagging season.

Wenger has been forced into the January sales after seeing his inept troops slide out of the Champions League positions.

And with skipper Cesc Fabregas crocked for virtually the rest of the season, he wants to move quickly and relatively cheaply to strengthen at The Emirates. His scouts have been scouring Europe for a keeper to rival Manuel Almunia but have come back with the news that there is nobody available better than Given for the price.

The Republic of Ireland stopper would set Arsenal back around £8million — which would appeal to the Frenchman’s sense of value with his £60,000-a-week wages unlikely to threaten Arsenal’s pay structure.

Sources close to Given have made it clear they believe he will be sold by the end of the transfer window with Arsenal his preferred destination.

Wenger was also lifted by the news Given travelled back to Germany three weeks ago and was given the all-clear by the surgeon who treated him following his collision with Marlon Harewood.

But it isn’t just Given, 32, who is on Arsenal’s radar.

Under-fire Wenger is desperate for cover at centre-half and wants Taylor (above left) to help provide an English-style spine to the team.

Taylor, 22, has been out of favour at St James’ Park for much of the season but has forced his way back into the team recently and Wenger has long been an admirer.

The Geordie signed a £30,000-a-week deal last season but knows he could almost double his money with a move to The Emirates as well as the chance to play under Wenger.

The final part of the jigsaw is French midfielder N’Zogbia (above centre) who is out of contract at the end of the season and has made it perfectly clear he sees his career away from Tyneside.

Toon boss Joe Kinnear is resigned to losing N’Zogbia, 22, but would be anxious to keep both Given and Taylor, although a joint bid of around £15m for the pair would be tempting as he looks to rebuild and strengthen.

Toon owner Mike Ashley is unwilling to invest heavily and has told Kinnear he will have to sell before he starts wheeling and dealing in the transfer window.

Personally I would make shay given our number 1 keeper in the morning if I could and many of you are already aware of that. However I doubt very much if wenger is planning on bringing in a player to replace what is effectively our club captain at this moment of time with cesc out inj so I am afraid that any dreams we may have of having a top quality keeper playing for us in the near future will be no more than dreams

As for the other two, I aint really convinced about taylor and I wouldnt want nzogbia playing for our ladies team much less our 1st team  Where is our commanding defensive centre midfielder though ?

Thanks FrenchGun. Yes, foreign language papers would keep me so busy it would be too much! But I think most Arsenal fans would be happy with those two players.

Goonertalk.com suggest:

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger could be considering offering Inter Milan midfielder Olivier Dacourt a 6 month contract at the club.

Dacourt, 33 - formerly with Leeds and Everton - may be allowed to leave Inter at a cut price £400,000, and French tactician Wenger has reportedly instructed his scouts to check on the player’s fitness.

Jonathan Northcroft in The Times links us to some old favourites and some surprise new ones:

David Villa (Valencia), Xabi Alonso (Liverpool), Andrei Arshavin (Zenit), Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus), Steve Finnan (Espanyol), Didier Zokora (Tottenham), Karim Benzema (Lyons), Daniele De Rossi (Roma)

david villa - too dear
xabi alonso - scousers wont sell for fear of a rebellion
arshavin - too dear
chiellini - too dear
finnan - do we need another right back ?? :?
zakora - is today april 1st ??
benzema - on our budget ??
de rossi - too dear

Now if you can find us some proven quality players in the £5m price range we can do business otherwise I will just tell the fans that we have all the solutions internally and that players are just not available to buy

After watching shay given's 1st half performance v the theiving scousers I would be surprised if he would be available for £8m but by the same token if wenger cannot see the difference between a genuine top class keeper like given and an average keeper like almunia then really there is no point having him there anymore
