Hillwood says money is tight

In tonights Standard Hillwood is quoted as saying due to the financial crisis currently effecting the world it would be unwise to spend large sums in the transfer window.

Don't expect to much to happen.

There is always a reason with the board not to spend.

What has the crisis got to do with the main income of Arsenal. Matchdays and television money stay the same and they are the main sources of income for us.

The fact is we don't have any money so why don't the board come out and tell us?

I just hope that with the players we have comming back in feb/march we can secure 4th place.

Every chairman goes "oh look Arsenal have no money"
Wenger says "Hay mister can I have your best player we have a tenbob note and a few Dong left over from a tour we did a few years ago"
Chairman say "Ok Arsenal here you are"

Hillwood says money is tight and yet on Arsenal.com we are told

ArsÃ¨ne Wenger believes that Arsenal's "naturally healthy situation" leaves them in good shape to cope with the current economic downturn.

Something doesn't add up

It's not that things don't add up, in fact they make perfect sense, and before anyone has a go at me for stickin up for the board don't bother cos that is not what I'm here to do, I am just as frustrated as every other gooner I know, BUT............ there is no point in everyone sayin "we were told that the reason we were moving to the new stadium was so that we could compete with the super rich clubs, but we're actually worse off"

we only moved a couple of years ago and surely it makes sense that the benefits might not be readily apparent in fact like it or not sometimes in order to move forward you have to take a couple of steps back, what I think the board are guilty of is underestimating the speed of change in the financial side of Premiership, but considerin the fact that nobody predicted it then IMO it's hard to vilify them for it!

Could they've done things better, absolutely yes but they got the biggest decision right and the reason we are so skint is the merchandising deals that are poor in comparison to our closest rivals who everyone of are already bloated by investors cash, but I like everyone esle would like to see some money spent in the window to secure 4th place purely cos there's no point in savin 20M only to miss out on the 30M in TV rights from the CL

So anyways I can see where most are coming from, but does no-one else think there is any sense at all in what the board are tryin to do, and altho there is also no doubt that AW has been guilty of talkin a lot of shite and in a manner so repetitive that makes you wanna pick up the TV and throw it out the window, think about it..... what choice does he have??? - really!

[/colo The board and AW seem to have forgotten the team is the product and every spare penny should be spent to make the team as good as we can make it, the sad thing is they talk about buying players like it's throwing money down the drain not like they are investing in the business and definitely not like they want to give the fans what they are paying for or what they want.
You say what choice does AW have, he has the choice to keep his mouth shut, this is half the problem we have a manager that thinks he is an economist and wants to have control over every part of the club, it's time he just got on with the job he is paid to do, getting the best players he can and getting the best out of those players and he is doing neither at the moment.
I don't want to hear his economic theories he's a football manager for christ sake we pay guys to deal with the financial side of things he has no need to get involved or comment on it. Every time he opens his mouth about this stuff it just proves to me that it is he who is making most of the financial decisions with regards players not the board, thats why he is constantly talking about it because he is trying to justify himself and his own decisions otherwise there would be no need for him to explain. Something doesn't add up

Yes, it's naturally healthy and it has been naturally supported by in excess of Â£20m per annum of Champions League cash (10% + of the club's revenue and more than half its operating profit). It therefore follows that it will be fucking naturally unhealthy when we finish 5th or lower for the next 3 years +

That is a very fair point B-G except that if it weren't for AW's awareness of the economic side of the game then we would have never been able to build the new stadium!

When Leeds went tits up O'Blarney typically tried to wash his hands of the whole affair sayin that it wasn't his fault as it was his job to ask for money for certain players and it was up to the chairman to decide wether or not the club could afford it, now I admit at the time I thought that was a fair enough comment until other PL chairmen pulled him up on the fact that it wasn't the fact that he'd spent the money the chairman gave him but the fact he'd spent it poorly leaving the club with virtually no assets to sell off when they got into financial trouble!

I have therefore no doubt that AW is very wary maybe even scared to splash serious amounts of money until he is 100% because his record at that end of the market is less than impressive eg. Wiltord, Reyes and if you look at the other clubs in the "big four" they have all signed massive flops making those two look like super signings and that is something unfortunately we cannot afford to do!

ManU are a freak of nature and even they are living beyond their means, along with the Chavs, L'pool had no assets to speak of, had never won the Premier League and yet they had to sell out to avoid goin bust and where the scousers are concerned that is pretty scary considerin they are a huge club with a far bigger fanbase than us!

Like I said I hope the club do spend a few quid this month cos some new blood can work wonders for a team especially one so low on confidence as we clearly are, only time will really tell whether or not the club have been shrewd or too timid,but I know where my money is!

Just look at Gordon Brown a man who is currently in demand all over the world giving other governments advice on how best to handle the current economic downturn, pretty unbelieveable innit a man who not 6 mnths ago was a dead man walkin is now seen as a financial guru to the entire western world and even he thought (and was so sure he actually allowed himself to be quoted) that he'd "abolished boom and bust" so be very careful before assuming that football is going to somehow be immune from being so prolifagate in the past ten years!
