Football Matters
Football Matters
Hi Folks just wanted your opinion on few arsenal matters as im going to a show called Football Matters broadcasted live on setanta tonight at 9.
Rather than have a personal opinion, i thought it would be a good idea if i speak on behalf of the majority of the gooners in here, will be hard to agree with what everyone says but i will try my hardest to represent The
Arsenal.
so if you can take a few minutes and answer few questions;
Whats going wrong with our season?
What are we missing?
Should Wenger be sacked at the end of the season?
Who do we want in January?
Are we going to win anything this season?
Whats going on with our board of directors?
Are we for or against a foreign takeover?

My personal take:
Whats going wrong with our season?
Lake of investment and relient on youth over experience.
What are we missing?
Experience and funds and mainly quality.
Should Wenger be sacked at the end of the season?
No. As we're in for a sticky few seasons and there's no one better to manage us with the use of limited funds.
Who do we want in January?
A DM!.....plus a GK, CD, winger (replacement for Rosicky)would be nice!
Are we going to win anything this season?
FA & CL are our only hopes. Unlikely, but a few 'pool friends are tipping us for CL (??)
Whats going on with our board of directors?
Purse strings are tight whilst paying for the stadium. However, we'd like to actually here that rather then spinning a web. Although our finance reports prints the facts.
Are we for or against a foreign takeover?
Personally No. In 5 years we'll start to reap the benefits of lower stadium payments. Plus we'd have also a new Kit manufacturer contract. Plus at the end of the 5 years a new Kit sponsor (2011). By around (I understand) 2018 the stadium payments should have have finished. Then by 2021 the Emirates naming rights would have expired.
By which time we'd be the owners of our own stadium and no longer be in debt (including a debt to a foriegn owner.) and be the largest self funding club in the world.
Although, it's strongly romoured thats Gazidis is looking at reviewing these current (poor) deals with a few to renegotiating.

Whats going wrong with our season? Everything.
What are we missing? Quality defensive midfielder/midfield general. Quality striker. Quality centre half. Rosicky...
Should Wenger be sacked at the end of the season? No. May 2010 is his date with destiny for me.
Who do we want in January? Quality signings. At least 2. Get rid of Eboue, Denilson and Song.
Are we going to win anything this season? Maybe Champions League as we seem to be able to raise our game for it.
Whats going on with our board of directors? Christ knows!
Are we for or against a foreign takeover? Against. Unless it is is purely free money!! If it's a leaveraged buy out then no way never no more!!

1. Whats going wrong with our season?
Not enough depth to our squad, so now we're relying on players who aren't quite ready yet and lack experience.
2. What are we missing?
DM, GK & Winger. Plus we have a problem with Ade, who isn't even half the player he was last year.
3. Should Wenger be sacked at the end of the season?
No. He should be given at least until the end of 2010 (3 transfer windows) to sort it out - even though it is his own mess! The new CE, Ivan Gazidis, should help take some of the pressure off Wenger in terms of neg contracts, which should free him up to find the players.
4. Who do we want in January?
On a previous thread I reeled off about 10 players, which shows the problems we have, but I'll keep it simple this time: (GK) Given; (DM) Yaya Toure ; & (Winger) Ribery.
5. Are we going to win anything this season?
Unlikely. Although I did a £10 on in the bookies when I saw the odds for us winning the CL (14-1)
6. Whats going on with our board of directors?
They are ultra-cautious and a little entrenched. They have never really listened to the fans and this seems to have worsened recently. They are trying to set the club up for the future, but by failing to explain clearly to the fans what their intentions are exactly and how much it will hurt in the short-term they aren't bringing the fans with them.
7. Are we for or against a foreign takeover?
Completely against it. You don't go through this much upheaval just to undermine all the hard work and sell it on the cheap to someone who only looks at the bottom line and certainly won't understand the club. At least our current board are looking at the long-term, a foreign investor will be looking for a short-term return on the money.
We are one of the last premiership clubs still British owned and I'm proud of that. If we become a foreign owned club I will consider handing in my season ticket.

Re: Football Matters
Whats going wrong with our season? failure to strengthen in the summer has led to a weaker team... which has led to everything else
What are we missing? leadership, experience, clinicality, efficiency
Should Wenger be sacked at the end of the season? no, he I believe he has limited resources and is doing a good job with them
Who do we want in January? a combative and dominant defensive minded midfielder is no 1. A creative wide player would be nice, as would a tall no-nonsense centre half.
Are we going to win anything this season? potentially, we can still win any of the competitions we are in
Whats going on with our board of directors? No idea. Perhaps our competetive struggle has affected them
Are we for or against a foreign takeover? against. our traditions need to be respected, and it is one thing that separates us from other big clubs, in a good way.

Thrown away lots of stupid points - looking at the fixture list, we should have been clear at the top by November - instead we're out of the race.
Reasons? Wenger's failure to replace Flamini, Gilberto and Diarra in defensive midfield (not signing Alonso was a disaster); poor concentration and spirit (last few mins vs Spurs, Stoke, Man City, Villa away); internal divisions (Gallas is a dickhead); injuries (creative/attacking heart of the side ripped out with Cesc, Rosicky, Walcott and Eduardo); shit behaviour of the fans; boardroom divisions.
What are we missing?
Above all else, a defensive midfielder. Injuries mean we now lack creative spark but we're only trying to sign Arshavin to try and salvage something from this season. Ideally, I'd like to replace Almunia and get a Vidic-like centre back in but these are not priority items at the moment, what we've got is just about good enough for now.
Should Wenger be sacked at the end of the season?
Absolutely not, despite his share of the blame for this season's failure. But for the last 12 months I have become increasingly worried that the fans will drive him out. He's still our best bet for a future at the top, esepcially with the economic crisis about to hit football in a very big way.
Who do we want in January?
Defensive midfielder plus Arshavin.
Are we going to win anything this season?
Doubt it. We're obviously out of the running for the league. CL is going to be between Real, Barca, Inter, Bayern and United. FA Cup possible but United could well win that too.
Whats going on with our board of directors?
Very worrying, seems Fiszman's driving everyone out (Dein, Bracewell-Smith and Edelman). At least the fat Russian doesn't have the cash to take over. Can only hope Kroenke is going to take a bigger role.
Pretty clear now that Wenger's cash will be more limited due to Highbury Square problems - the risk on that probably looked a senisble one a few years ago but is now an albatross round our necks. Damage limitation is now the name of the game. But we (along with United, City and Villa) are still better placed to ride the financial storms than almost everyone else. I predict very bad times for Liverpool, Chelsea, Everton and Spurs over the next few years.
The lack of quality in the board has become a big problem. Would like to see the back of PHW, and hope that Gazidis can live up to his New Dein billing.
Are we for or against a foreign takeover?
Don't care where owners come from so long as the club doesn't become a toy, especially for someone as deeply suspect as Usmanov. Would rather we stayed the way we are than did a Chelsea or a City. But would be happy for a sensible owner (like Lerner at Villa) to take over or assume a big role, and Kroenke may be that person. But there will be very little cash for buying football clubs over the next few years, so the question is probably academic.

so if you can take a few minutes and answer few questions;
Whats going wrong with our season?
Our season started on wrong foot, because we let Diarra, Flamini and Gilberto go last season. Three defensive midfielders, yet we did not replace any of them.
The squad is also badly divided into cliques.
What are we missing?
A defensive midfielder (or two!) and a dominant aggresive centre back.
Should Wenger be sacked at the end of the season?
No. He has had limited funds compared to other clubs.
Who do we want in January?
A defensive midfielder (Matuidi?), a centre back (Chiellini?) and an attacking midfielder to strengthen squad because Cesc, Rosicky and Walcott are injured (Arshavin?).
Are we going to win anything this season?
No.
Whats going on with our board of directors?
Chaos! Looks as if the remaining members of board are preparing for best conditions for a sale, should they decide to sell
Are we for or against a foreign takeover?
Against at this stage
Whats going wrong with our season?
The squad is completely imbalanced. Too much youth not enough experience, too many technically gifted players not enough grafters. The inexperience and lack of winning mentality means the squad has a fragile confidence.
What are we missing?
Defensive midfielder, leadership and tactics. Flamini has been missed more than any other departure under Wenger because we have no one else like him and no replacement was signed.
Should Wenger be sacked at the end of the season?
No, but he should be told by the board that what is currently happening is not acceptable. Unfortunately he has answered to no-one for to long, has made mistakes and now risks the supporters gradually turning on him.
Who do we want in January?
A defensive midfielder should be the priority, but it appears Wenger doesn’t see this as a problem area, instead focusing on ANOTHER creative player. van Bommel would be ideal. Upson would also be welcomed back with open arms.
Are we going to win anything this season?
Unlikely but I said that in 2006 and we can extremely close to landing the big one. Probably need the other English teams to get knocked out by others in Europe to have a good chance of visiting Rome twice this year.
Whats going on with our board of directors?
Similar to the team, a lack of decisive leadership, people may not have liked Dein at the end but no one can deny his influence at the club and in English football in general benefitted us. Kroenke looks in a good position to gain more power but does he want it? I’m not convinced he does. Usmanov looms large but won’t move for a while due to the economic climate.
Are we for or against a foreign takeover?
Open to options but certainly not Usmanov, the current directors need to have their own “fit to own the clubâ€
