Although it's very unlikely I don't think we're as far off as some of you seem to think. Wenger neeed to be brave enough to make some changes but if he does and it pays off we will be a very very good team. Say he decides to play Ramsey and Vela every week and it works, plus that Toure gets back to his best. That's bacsically all we need.

I remember (in 1998) that I did not believe we could do it until we won 4-1 at Blackburn in April. Scorers that day Bergkamp, Parlour and Anelka. If I remember rightly Paddy confirmed his legend status that day.

Anybody see us winning 4-1 at Wigan in April and believing we'll have a midfield including the likes of the above plus Overmars and Petit.

You've hit the nail on the head Chippy. Form is temporary, class is permament. In those days we could have a slump, fall 10 points behind and win the league by winning 10 on the trot because some of the players were world class. Unfortunately these days we may only be 6 or 8 points adrift but without quality we aint gonna be there at the finish.

It was a two-horse race in those days. Catching one team is one thing, but hoping that 3 or 4 are all going to screw up enough for us to catch up is something else.

That game at Blackburn was fantastic though, great memories.

I was at the match, and if I remember rightly, it started snowing heavily in the 2nd half, and they had to switch to an orange ball.

I was worried the game would be abandoned, which would have been a disaster, as Ewood was a tough place to go, and we were 2 or 3 goals up!

Proof of what a big win that was... ManUre went to Ewood the following week and drew.

I agree Chippy, that was when it all started to feel real. That and the 1-0 win at Old Trafford, of course 8)

I have so many wonderful memories of that season, and that win at Ewood was definately one of them!

This Is The Daybreak wrote:Do you remember 1997/98? 13 points behind Man Utd after a defeat to Blackburn at home in mid december...Tony Adams argubly had his worst game in an Arsenal shirt that day...we dropped to about 6th or 7th in the league.

We kept on doing our business quietly...1-0 victories here, 2-1 victories there (Remember Gilles Grimandi grinding out a 1-0 victory over Palace at Highbury) and lo and behold March/April came around and we were right up there again.

Ok fair enough I cant see a Adams/Vieira/Bergkamp in this squad and it's incredibly unlikely, but as long as we keep winning (which with this Arsenal team who know what'll happen week by week) who knows
Or a Keown, or a Bouldy, or an Overmars, or a Wrighty, or a Parlour, or a Petit, or a bleeding Remi Garde for that matter!!

The team will come good.

remember i told you 1st.

theres players to come back.

And the average players will only get better.

PS. I am not mad. and i honsetly belive this. Its not impossible, if we get our act together ASAP.
I often think this tbh. Then I see the team sheet for the next game and snap back into reality.

98 is what gives me some hope as well..

I now wish Almunia and Adebayor will get inured and Fabianski and Vela will replace them the way Manninger and Anelka did with Seaman and Wrighty :barscarf:

Seriously though, Man Utd will be hard to stop but Cska West London are dropping points and their board and star players will be starting to sulk now. I can't see Liverpool and Villa having as good a second half of the season while hopefully we can only improve.

Saying that if things start to / keep going wrong like,

Almunia start playing as poorly as we all know he can do

Toure never get back to what he was despite the proming signs on sat

Clichy keep refusing to learn from his mistakes

Diaby & RvP keep getting injured

and Ade only turn up when he feels like it...

well, then 4th place will be a struggle.

Basically what I'm trying to say is, with the right attitude and a bit of luck..who knows what might hapen but with the wrong attitude and a bit of misfortune, Uefa cup here we come!

In 1998 we had the greatest back 5 ever in English football,PV4 and Manu in midfield Overmars and the great Bergkamp upfront.Dont even think adout comparing this team with them.In fact this is by far the worst squad in Wengers 12 years at the club
