Financial restraint must be a factor in our decline since 2005.
Since then, we have seen massive investment into Chelsea, and a large investment at Man Utd.
Our spending power compared to the other top sides is relatively weaker than it was in 2005.
So as Spud says, in the aftermath of us spending big on a new stadium, Wenger decided to develop youth, rather than try in vain to match the spending power of our rivals.
His youth idea was good in theory, but there has been a vital flaw in application.
The lack of level headed experienced players mixed in to guide the youth.
There needs to be a "Captain of each section" on the pitch.
A leader in goal, a leader in defence, a leader in midfield and a leader up front.
If you have those four key spine players, then you can have youth around them, offering vigour, but looking to the leader in each section to offer positional advice, and to calm tempers, to encourage and to advise.
We were on our way with this plan, but the summer of 2008 saw it derailed.
Almunia proved to be a reasonable keeper, but not a captain or world class keeper such as Seaman (or sometimes Lehmann).
Gallas came to the club with talent and authority, but has been inconsistent as a player, and the Birmingham game saw him mortally wounded as a leader of men.
Gilberto may not have played much last season, but his presence at the club was surely a guiding force.
And up front?

Yes the team is poor the poorest ever but Wengers towing the corporate line. He won't publically say there shit as most of his training methods are through self believe.
Regarding Highbury yes the incoming was a lot lower but we didn't have a £18million a season (mininum) payment debt to pay.
We also got screwed on several sponsor deals as we needed the money urgently (upfront) in order to start the payments on the stadium.
Look at the Fly Emirates deal compared to Man u's AIG.
We got £42Million on a 8 year deal. Man U got £54M (??).
Doesn't look that much of a difference expect for when I say the AIG deal is only a 4 year contract.
That means that Man U could and are already neogoticating a new deal ready for next year. Probably another £54+ on a four year. Therefore our 8 year deal should have been nearer £84M.
To put it in perspective that a lose of over £12.5M a season compared to Man U!!
Who brokered that deal? Endleman.
The reason I posted the thread "the Truth" is that I can see this backlash comming for Wenger. It'll be us that sadly push Wenger out.

Gus, you posted that at 7.32am. Poor man, you obviously didn't sleep much last night with all this on your mind. The 476.3 mile round trip last night made me fucked off too. Like you say, until we the fans understand exactly what the money situation is then more and more fans are going to start questioning whether it's time for him to go because of the contradictory messages we receive about what's available to spend. I agree 100% with the your 'stop treating us like idiots' theme to your thread. That is THE worst part of this season.
By the way, our support last night was again first class and for those of you who think The Emirates is quiet, you should have listened to Goodison Park, particularly in the first half!

You don't sack the guy straight away when he hits his first crisis at a club! Give him a little time to turn it round.
Yes the squad is poor and its totally his fault. It's not the boards fault, it's not because DD has left, it's because AW has bought players who are too young, too inexperienced and expected to do too much. They need time, unfortuantely we don't have time when the team play as badly as they have.
If we end up 5th (or below!) AW's first action should be to sell 4 or 5 of the squad, then admit that the team were nowhere near good enough. Then buy and buy big.
I'm sure I'll get shot down for this - and if I had a choice I wouldn't choose it, but - a season, ONE SEASON, in the UEFA cup might not do us any harm as a club. Yes, some of our bigger players will want out - but as long as Cesc stays, is that a bad thing? What it would do might do is force the board to dig deep into their pockets and AW to buy some better players.
Remember the good times and give him a proper grace period.

I would hope he stayed, but player loyalty seems to have dissappeared in football.
I'm not saying I want UEFA, sorry, EUROPA cup football, but it might not be a completely bad thing and it's looks increasing likely. I've added up the points I think Villa will get and it's going be touch and go if we can pip them to fourth. They need to have an injury crisis and we need some players to step up.

As you say, the club needed the money, and fast. If there had been more time to negotiate, Edelman would have had more leverage to broker a better deal.
There was a delay of one year on the new stadium whilst the club struggled to get enough money, and it eventually took six banks to finance the stadium.
I reckon that that finance was dependent on the sponsorship money being available, and that the offer of that finance was not going to be around for ever.
But for the future, let us hope that Gazidis can re-negotiate sponsorship now that the stadium is proven to run at a profit.

Your exactly right about no-one revving the side up - look when we scored and the reaction of Bendtner at the back post - nothing and other players the same. The same with Song on the bench, and maybe others but I didn't see, against Hull when Nasri scored - no reaction! I'm not saying jump around and all that but surely something? When benayoun scored last night and torres was 1 yard from goal he threw his arms in the air as a natural reaction - I know these players aren't fans but surely there is some sort of reaction to a team mate scoring. All this shit from Wenger about "spirit" is bollocks. It seems that the team is split into groups, egos and self-interest with the blame being passed around and no-one taking responsibility.
