Ashburton Grove or Highbury?

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Ashburton Grove or Highbury?

Post by southwest clockender »

If we'd known how much the new stadium was going to restrict us in the transfer market and affect the quality of the team would you have prefered to have stayed at Highbury?

I personally have missed Highbury ever since we left and always said i'd go back tomorrow if l could but even more so recently when this new stadium seems to be such a loose around our neck stopping us adding much needed quality to our squad.

Highbury for me provides many happy memories where as Ashburton provides so much frustration.

Highbury with terrraces, a hardcore 20,000 working class supporters supporting their team..the good old days, gone for ever

West Ham on a saturday used to a buzz ffs!..feels like a chore going now..rather go down the pub

Highbury. 38000. Trophies. 8)

I do like the new stadium as a building, but it is lacking so much as a football stadium, especially atmos wise. Highbury had it's quiet days as we all know but nothing like the new place.

PS; I really want the Grove to work, to become a fortress with great atmos etc but until they give us two huge standing areas behind each goal it ain't gonna happen. :(

If i could look into the future and see Arsenal competing with Barcelona or Milan for the top players due to the Groves income etc then id settle for that but i miss Highbury and at the moment wish we could go back home

Highbury.

I hate the new ground because it stands for everything that I hate about modern football. Not only that, but they could have done a better job to make it distinctive from other identikit stadiums - But I guess that's what the "younger generation" are used to and accept...and expect :?

It's just a personal preference.

I went on the last ever Highbury tour and to be honest you couldn't believe what a run down shithole the place had become in places.

It was easier to see that when it wasn't disguised by 35,000 people.

Ok they had obviously stopped spending on the place long ago but it had run it's course as our home.

As much as I miss it I am happy with the Grove. As new stadiums go it looks good and it ticks all the other boxes.

Remember though, it is not the new stadium that stops the atmosphere but rather the new supporters and the club with their Nazi stewards!

I dont thinks its the new stadium to blame but the fans who attend. The JCL"s and the daytrippers.I would get rid of the club level though and have one end behind the goal for fans who want to stand up and sing

Highbury had charm, it had history, it represented Arsenal. That feeling started to go downhill when they knocked the North bank terracing down. Highbury had a magic about it & with the terracing, we were all together as one through thick & thin. The last 10 years at highbury don't apply. Library atmosphere, fake fans, impossible to get tickets etc..I disagree it was rundown though..what are you on about?

At the Emirates, we've got w*nk pretend fans who never sing & give funny looks to those that do want to get behind their team. I don't give a flying f*ck what some muppet steward does or says & he ain't gonna do anything if the whole block are singing but that don't happen.

15 years ago, football took on a new face with TV money, Champions league etc. The quality on the field is better than ever but going to a match & especially for my beloved team, the Arsenal is pretty souless. We've got tons of overpaid mugs who can all run 100 meters in 10 seconds (when they want to) but with zero personality. No character. Everyone just waits for something to happen & even when we're one nil up we still don't sing. It's f*cking embarrasing.

I miss Highbury!

I've been with fans to the Grove that never went to Highbury and they think the Grove is amazing and a credit to Arsenal, But i think the Grove does lack the Highbury Atmosphere.

What we need from the grove is some great memories.

The atmosphere in Highbury was shit long before the NB terrace went... It had it's good days and it's bad...

As for the place being run down, Gus is right. It was starting to get that way, mostly because the club were moving and not spending on upkeep.

As I said Alex the place was very run down.

Like I said it was obviously due to the club reducing what they spent on the ground with the move on the horizon and rightly so.

The East Stand was a mess. When we was in the dugouts you looked up and there was paint flaking away, cables hanging down and just general untidyness.

The changing rooms looked grubby and the corridor from the changing rooms to the tunnel had patching up work on ito make it safe.

It looked terrible. I know...........I saw it.

Sure the North Bank looked better as it was newer but even that had a tired look.
