NOW ALMOST ALL OF US THINK WE NEED A WIDE PLAYER, A DEFENDER AND MAYBE A STRIKER. SO WHY HAVE WE SIGNED ANOTHER CENTRAL MIDFIELDER, I HEAR YOU ASK?
TRYING TO GET INTO WENGER'S HEAD TO WORK OUT HIS REASONING FOR THIS SIGNING, ONE WOULD HAVE TO COME UP WITH THE FOLLOWING ANSWERS:
HE IS HAPPY WITH THE FORWARD LINE THAT WE HAVE (ROBIN,ADE,BENDTNER,EDU,THEO AND EITHER TOMAS OR ALEX AS SUPPORT STRIKER WHEN REQUIRED);
ALTHOUGH NOT PERFECT FOR SOME OF US, WENGER SEES EDUARDO/TOMAS/ALEX/THEO/EBOUE AND MAYBE EVEN RVP AND CLICHY AS OUR WIDE OPTIONS;
THE MANAGER PROBABLY BELIEVES THAT IN EBOUE/HOYTE/SENDEROS/GILBERTO AND TRAORE HE HAS DEFENSIVE COVER FOR SAGNA/TOURE/GALLAS/CLICHY, AND STRENGTH IN DEPTH - AND THAT'S NOT FORGETTING JOHAN DJOUROU, WHO COMES BACK IN JANUARY.
IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT, BY SIGNING DIARRA, WENGER PROBABLY BELIEVES HE HAS KILLED THREE BIRDS WITH ONE PEEBLE.
FIRSTLY, DIARRA CAN FILL IN FOR GILBERTO IF/WHEN HE IS INJURED OR HAS TO DROP BACK TO CENTRE HALF; SECONDLY AND AT THE SAME TIME, IT MEANS WENGER HAS ADDITIONAL COVER FOR THE CENTRAL DEFENSIVE POSITIONS (GILBERTO) AND RIGHT/LEFT BACK (DIARRA). FINALLY, HE IS PROBABLY THINKING THAT HE HAS THE PERFECT REPLACEMENT FOR GILBERTO WHEN OUR BRAZILIAN MOVES ON/RETIRES.
DIARRA IS MAYBE NOT THE KIND OF SIGNING THAT MOST OF US WANTED/EXPECTED, BUT I FEEL HE IS A GREAT ACQUISITION FOR ARSENAL NONE THE LESS.

Have to say I'm with Cockerill's Chin on this one lads - I know that he looks a fine player but aren't we already well covered in the centre of the back ? Even if we did manage to sell flamini & song(some hope) we would still be left with cesc,gilberto,diably & denilson so is wenger doing with centre midfielders with George Graham did with centre backs ie hoarding them ? If we play diarra at right back tomorrow then what does that say to hoyte(who i dont think is good enough myself) ? Last season he was behind eboue and now sagna has also jumped ahead of him so if he isnt rated then why the f*ck did he get a new contract only a few months ago ? It is also pissing me off that we seem to be buying a lot of players that can play in different positions but no-one that is a specialist in any one position and again that smacks of doing things the cheap way - we cannot afford to have a big enough squad to last a season so we buy players that can cover several spots but you know what they say....jack of all trades but master of none. I again will say that I like the player but believe that we have more pressing needs elsewhere(left winger & a striker) that should have been addressed 1st but then again wenger probably plans trying out fabiniski in those positions shortly.

liking that UFG, could obviously use it for La Sagna as well, but probablt better for Lassana...good work..
interesting signing..2m is very cheap for a player I heard hailed as "the new Makelele" last season..versatile..I wouldn't have thought he was being bought to play in midfield too much
good luck and welcome to the boy..

EOT - I too, like everyone else was initially surprised at the news but when you look at it from as business point of view it actually makes perfect sense!
The fee reflects the fact that he was not getting the 1st team football that he wants and definately deserves, because of the competition for midfield at Chelsea from players who are at the peak of their career, he was going to be out of contract at the end of another year of seeing very little action for them but still being on their payroll and then they'd lose him at the end of the season anyway for nothing and it would more than likely have still been to us as apparently there was nowhere else he wanted to go
(good sign???) so when you look at it that way it's not that hard to see why this deal was actually inevitable!
