THE ARSENALS GREATEST NIGHT

The 1st arsenal game i was ever at was on the day of the hillsborough disaster but i cant remember who we played that day. I was wondering if anybody could tell me who we played.I do remember hearing somebody who was listening to a radio saying there ws something wrong at the lpool game.I also remember turning to my uncle who had brought me to the match and telling him lpool fans were at it again causing trouble. How WRONG WAS I.

We played Newcastle mate and won 1-0. Think that was the day Kenny Sansom played against us and nearly scored.

Very very good - a unique insight, I always wondered what was said after Smudger's goal, particularly between the ref and his lino :-P :barscarf:

There was a longer extract of the same book published in the Observer on saturday. was going to start a thread about it today. It seems like an excellent read.

Using such a memorable day / date in football as a marker for its change in mainstream media. Looking forward to the interview in the gooner.

I was there with my brother-in-law. Very strange/subdued atmosphere with rumours circulating that something bad had happened - but not much in the way of real information. We only knew the true extent of the disaster once we went into a pub at Finsbury Park and saw it on the TV.

I was there too by the large pillars under the clock end.

I game (or moment) I'll never forget.
As MK said rumours were starting about Liverpool fans being on the pitch and typical scousers etc....
Soon the news turned to casulties on the pitch and match being abandon.

The rest of the Arsenal game was very VERY subdued. Not in a Highbury library way but most of us knew the seriousness of Hillsboro miles away at the same time but in a different football ground
