Should Arsenal Cash In On Gilberto?

Post by stearmaster »

Rumours regarding Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva's future have been hovering around The Emirates like a bad smell for some time now.

It's true that he was one of, if not the best player at Arsenal last season, putting in a string of brave display's for The Arsenal, scoring 11 goals along the way.

That would seemingly make him an invaluable player to Arsene Wenger, but is £10Million too good to turn down for a player approaching the twilight of his career?

I'm not going to try and convince you wither way.

There's is no doubting that he is a fantastic player, probably one of the best defensive midfielders in Europe last season, so surely we shouldn't sell him?

Or should we?

as it stands we have; Fabregas, Diaby, Denilson, Gilberto, Diarra and Song who play in centre midfield. Rosicky and Hleb can both play there while Toure and Djourou can easily slot in there.

That's 6 players that are competing for 2 places, and another 4 players that can slot in there. Surely that's far too many?

As much as I don't want to see it happen, I think that Song will leave Arsenal in January or next summer. Not because he isn't good enough, but because the vast majority of Arsenal fans have climed on a rather large bandwagon and have decided that he isn't good enough to play for Arsenal before he's had a decent run in the team.

Diarra will be at Arsenal for a long time yet, of that there is no doubt.

So what will happen with Gilberto? I think he'll stay. Wenger knows that there is prescious little experience in the team as it is, and ditching a player that has won countless trophies, including the world cup, would cost the team dear in that sense.

But should he be allowed to leave if the reported £10Million offer comes in?

I have my opinion, which I wont share with you just yet.

Thoughts? Opinions?

It had to be a poll
Do it before the stock market sets his value down & he goes for peanuts
I hope he will be around for the rest of his carrer & in so & so years turns out to be a legend who meets & greets fans in the Arsenal extra time lol
His pace will soon go & for some reason an injury is going to come :(
He is a strong player & is very useful at the back which will be his place in the /a team towards the end of his footballing time
With the future of Cesc in a doubt for a long carrer is a reason that the Chelsea player came ere
Gilberto at the moment along with Cesc is my fav player & blowing me away with the games he played last season as i gave him stick for playing shite (in my view) in 05/06
Diaby i rate & i can see him easily replaceing Gilberto as that strong link we have had in the centre of midfield for a good few years now
If Gilberto has a last season at Arsenal it will be this season with a growing team & thinking that 30 year old men are somewhat too old for football
Lets hope insted of going on about who leaves we get along with the football & get into the quest for winning some prober trophies

my heart says no but my head says yes.
however with arsene's reluctance to spend big in the transfer market would it actually make a differance selling him, if the moneys not to be used we may aswell use his experiance and calming influence until he decides he would like to move on

Not in my opinion, no way!

We need his experience, his mentorship and his ball-winning ways for another full season at the least.

It's not like we can fetch 12million pounds for him or anything...selling Anelka and Overmars was cashing in...selling Gilberto would be nothing in profit really.

The fact that he scored 11 goals last season doesnt hide the fact that most were penalties. While I like bert and appreciate his commitment I do become frustrated at his unwillingness to put in a crunching tackle at least once in a while which given his position I would have thought it would an absolute must. I dont really care if we sell him as such except that yet again it would be interpreted that we are a selling club and this image will seriously hinder the progression of the club as a big club worldwide. The only way to defy that image is to use the money to make a big signing to replace the high profile player leaving - some chance of that ever happening

I voted no because i don't think we shouldn't cash in on him, however if a bid over £10m did come in for it how could Arsene say no? After all he is nearly 30 years of age so might be good business.

I don't think a bid for that much will come in so no i don't wan't to 'Cash in on him'.

A definite NO! He is one of best midfielders and we'd struggle without him. I know Denilson and Diaby etc are good but not good enough to take Gilberto's place so soon.

Anyway, he's not even that old for a footballer

No way we wont know what we will have lost until he's gone! He should be like bergkamp for us and be here until he retires.

His experience will be useful and we don't yet have a player as good as him, even when he does get usurped, he can act as cover for the new holding player

We've talked about this subject a lot over the summer, and it seems its pretty divided .
Personally, I say (again) that we should not sell him. World cup winners are a very rare breed indeed, even if he is pushing 30. His experience alone is a valuable thing, and although he's not the greatest player ever, he's not exactly crap is he ?

Even at 30 years of age Gilberto Silva would make a perfect squad player in ANY team on the planet !

Contrary to popular belief, I don't think we're in dire need for the cash, so I don't think we should cash in on him. I also don't think we will cash in on him either. Still, if an offer of over £7M comes in, then maybe we will. As I've said many times before; I for one wouldn't be too devastated about it.
