In the league game we were 2-0 up and cruising and it precisely because we didn't just try to hold on that we conceded and almost surrendered 2 points.... Not conceding on Tuesday is even more important that scoring, so the crowd will need to give undying support....but also show patience. Going into the final 20 mins with the score at 0-0 would not be the end of the world!

Wenger says on official site that fitness test will decide his formation and tactics, surely we must go 4-4-2 no matter who is fit! do I sense an excuse in his comments before the game even starts.

Why 4-4-2?

Anyone remember thinking GG had lost the plot playing 3 centre halves when we had to win by 2?

We don't have the quality defensively to play 3 at the back, and our best defenders are the 2 full backs. My worry is he will go 4-4-1-1 despite it proving disastrous twice already.

I am not saying play 3 centre halves I am saying there is more than one way to skin a cat.

Playing 5 in midfield is not neccesarily negative.

We are at our best when we play 4-4-2 so why change, especially when changing our formation never seems to work.

I know that you aint suggesting playing 3-5-2 percy/wayno but personally I have thought for a long time that it is the system that would suit our players the best 8) Sagna, eboue, clichy and gibbs are all wing back type of players anyway and the system would also allow wenger to play 3 in the middle of the park as he seems to prefer that. Anyway like I said before, I know wenger wont go with it but every so often he should consider throwing a curve ball at our opposition and this would do the job for me :barscarf:

Its funny, but I'm nowhere near as nervous for this match than I was for the first leg. I kind of know in my mind (but not heart) that we're the underdogs. That for us to get through will be one of the achievements of all time. And that makes me less nervous than if we were already a goal up - and could just be on the verge of blowing it.

Hope the players feel the same way and that they can, as Wenger hopes, just go out there and enjoy it....

Agreed Percy. The formation at OT wasn’t necessarily all that bad, the no. of players being asked to play out of position was. As you yourself (well, sort of yourself ) have said in the past there’s not all that much difference between a 4-5-1 & a 4-4-2 if the right players are in their right positions.

RVP as the second striker would drop deep & make it a 4-5-1 when they’ve got the ball & a 4-4-2 when we have it. If he’s not fit then it may well have to be Diaby in that role  but at least he should be better there than on the wing. And too high up the pitch for his constantly getting caught on the ball to hurt us too badly.

As for 3-5-2 augie you could argue we do anyway. What is a 3-5-2 other than a 4-4-2 but with the full-backs overlapping & the wingers cutting inside? I would be a bit wary of our full-backs pushing too far forward too early tomorrow though given a) Ushtd will be looking to hit us on the break & b) we don’t have a DM with the nous to make sure he’ll cover when Gibbs or Sagna bomb forward.

Whatever the case let’s just hope to fuck that Tony Saunders is on here tomorrow night starting an I Told You So thread for saying it would be better to lose the first leg!
