Non-Football related internet connection question.

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Non-Football related internet connection question.

If you live in a non-cable area, is it possible to get an internet connection without using BT, because I tell you what I've more than had enough of them.

you can get other providers through your BT line, but the bottom line is this. the distance you are from the exchange influences the speed it is possible to get. BT might say they can improve the speeds if you pay more, but it might not in reality be possible. type speed test into google and you can find out exactly how fast your online signal is. come to an agreement with BT that if this does not improve after an upgrade you won't have to pay anymore than you do now. but make sure you check the speed at the same time each day for a few days as it does vary depending on the number of users.

and this from a luddite. there are forum users much more savvy than me on this stuff. long and short of it though is that as long as your connection is through the phone line, there's little point in changing provider unless they are significantly cheaper.

hope that helps

It is possible to get someone other than BT. It will mean not using BT for both telephone services and internet (a double bonus :-))

What you need is an LLU provider. A non-LLU provider is one where you have to keep paying BT the 9.99 a month line rental. An LLU provider is one where you pay BT nothing, and instead pay the LLU provider for line rental, phone calls, broadband etc.

go here:

http://www.samknows.com/broadband/checker2.php

and enter your postcode. It will come back and tell you which providers you are able to get services from. Look for the LLU providers and pick one of them.

From what I hear, I'd stay well clear of Talk Talk and Sky. I think Tiscali and Be are meant to be OK. I used Bulldog for a while, and they were OK once it all got set up, but it took a while...

Hope this helps.
