In the past you dug me out for taking an anti anthem stance and here you are now taking one yourself are you not ,or is it the choice of song that puts you off.

ED a question for You. what feedback did u get from edelwise about about the Gooner Poll for the Anthem ?????????

Im of the opinion he encouraged this as he always intededf t6o put the wonder of you up there . Its probably the record they played at his wedding .

the feedback i got from the club is that they actually went through the threads about possible tunes suggested by forum users, but were never going to regard our poll as the deciding factor. wonder of you was proposed by donaldo if i remember rightly, and it missed making the poll we had as there was another elvis tune which had a bit more enthusiasm behind it - can't help falling in love with you.

i think the one thing that has indisputably come out of all this is that there was never ever going to be one tune on which everybody was going to agree upon. and that isn't going to change. another thing that isn't going to change is the playing of 'wonder of you' as there is a belief that if it becomes a habit, there will be less reistance to it. i have to confess i rarely get in in time to hear the thing, but from what i have heard it is going down better than i had expected at this stage.

and one thing about the tune which i do believe - as it's an elvis song, we are not going to get as much stick for it as we would have if 'somewhere over the rainbow' had been chosen, although many liked that one.

I WAS NEVER AGAINST THE IDEA OF AN ANTHEM, I JUST WANTED IT TO BE ONE GENERATED BY THE FANS AND NOT ONE FOISTERED ON US BY THE CLUB.

AS IT HAPPENS, I WAS AGAINST THE EVENTUAL FORUM POLL WINNER, 'IMPOSSIBLE DREAM', BECAUSE I DIDN'T FEEL IT WAS APPROPRIATE. MY THOUGHTS ON THE CURRENT ONE ARE THE SAME - I DON'T BELIEVE IT'S THE RIGHT ONE FOR ALL MANOR OF REASONS, WHICH I WON'T GO INTO AGAIN HERE, BUT HAVE ELUCIDATED IN PREVIOUS POSTS ON THIS SUBJECT.

i can see the anthem working but as alot of people have said it will take time. the best way the club can get everyone to sing this is by getting the words put up on the big screen and or get gunnersaurus or someone like this to stand out in the centre circle and sing and dance to it. it needs to be mad clear to everyone that this is what the song is for as at the moment i dont think people do.

mirror was just saying the kids come out to it and played like 'elvis the king' and entertained the fans.

How about gunnersaurus dressed up in the centre circle as elvis with either the words on the big screen or song sheets given out/left on the seats.

As ive said before i think an anthem is a good idea but will only work if people know what is going on and at the moment i only think people on this forum and a few other people who have heard from people who go on here know about it.

i think the idea is that rather than make a big thing of it, the club just play it at the same time and it becomes a habit without people really thinking too much about it. so it kind of gets into the subconscious and a part of the matchday routine. then before you know it, half the crowd are singing along. and let's face it, how hard is it for people to find out the lyrics if they want to? try googling 'elvis wonder of you lyrics' and hey presto!

if the club did make a big thing about it, then there would probably be more resistance. so gunnersaurus as elvis is something i don't think you'll see anytime soon. i think it's gradually taking off - quicker than i expected - and part of the credit for the song goes to the discussion thread we've had since april which mentioned the song as a possibility. i know for a fact that people at the club were monitoring the thread for suggestions and donaldo suggested 'wonder of you'

hi all

i agree we need an anthem and we need to start it now!!!

despite all the shortlist personally i like the wonder of you, i have a couple of suggestions.

firstly - green green grass of home sung like the stoke boys with delilah.

secondly - the who's the kids are alright, catchy known by most very apt given the present team and roger dltrey is a gooner.

what do you think?

Still has to be Streets of London for me lovely tune, great lyrics and a real traditional feel about it, sorry but TWOY doesn't do anything for me and a really can't see why it was chosen, I must admit I was disappointed when I heard the final choice, it's just not a heartfelt song and therefore unsuitable for an anthem - unfortunately
