Jeeze, I missed all the fun last night .. and left 2smooth to take defend our corner all by himself ...
folks, the point here for me is that:
-- there are two types o clubs: those who buy finished articles at high prices, and those that buy non-finished articles and shape them to be great.
-- AW's style is the later.
-- From a personal point of view, if a player is making this journey towards being as good as they can be, and (cery importantly) is being selected by le boss for matches, the least one can do is back them up and not add to the problem by slating or publically booing them when they most need our support.
-- Senderos was very good in the run-up to our champions league final two seasons ago. Along the way, he dropped a clanger or two, and is yet to recover from the loss of confidence that ensued. I still believe he is a skilled defender and can pull through, but whether he actually does is what we will need to wait and see. Until then, I will hold back from slating him at every opportunity, even when its not deserved.
-- 2smooth was spot on about TA being dreadful in his first season or two. I read an article on sunderland website recently, where one ex player was commenting on how they beat us at home (thanks to TA), and they were not expecting to see him again in an arsenal shirt .. well, TA went on to become an arsenal legend and won quite a few titles with arsenal.
-- Cygan won the player of the year at villareal last season ..
-- Flamini was being similarly slated .. em .. just a month or so ago, now he is the flanimal.
-- Finally, I am not in any way suggesting folks should not hold a contrary opinion to mine. Without debate, this site might as well be dead. We just need to be more tolerant of differing opinion, and less aggressive when tackling those differing opinions.

so true,,, wasnt a great performance and steaua are a bad team,, but we won and thats 10 wins in a row i think,, so nowt to moan about at the momentEdgeOfTown wrote:We were due a subdued performance and we got it, but nicking the goal was really important last night..
Wasn't great to watch but VP is always capable of a moment like that and 1-0 away from home looks very nice. And another clean sheet...
Hope everyone had a good trip, report back when possible..

imagine if we were sp*rs fans,,

Maybe I am being picky but there are aspects of last nights game which dont please me. I know all the usual phrases will come out like "it was a professional performance" and "we got the 3 pts" but the doesnt quite do enough for me. I accept that the team was maybe due a small blip but what concerns me is that we appear to lack in drive for want of a better word. Lets be honest here if we believe that we are a good team then we would be expecting to beat a team like this but we are nowhere near positive enough. With 20 mins to go & the game scoreless we brought on a defensive holding midfielder which is not radiating confidence and belief in the players to go and get the win.
If we accept that some players were below par last night(eboue, hleb & ade imo) then why not make a change or 2 when the subs have a chance to make a positive contribution ? Why not bring in theo for the clueless eboue or bedtner for the tiring ade ? In my opinion wenger is not ruthless enough in looking to get the 3 pts on occasions and this has to filter down to the players and affect their mindset. I can be well sure that teams like barca,ac milan & the likes would have been more ruthless last night and it concerns me and I feel that this negativity is 100% on le boss.
On the senderos debate I am firmly in the "give the lad a chance" corner at least until he screws up. To say that he is no better than song is an almighty insult to any player(I even think at 38 years old that I am better myself than song) and he does not deserve that pasting. Big phil played a big part in our run to champs lge final 2 years ago and I believe that the ability is there however his confidence took an almighty battering last season(mostly due to didier dogbreath) and like many others I fear that he will not be able to recover that confidence enough to ever establish himself at our club. He has however contributed more to our cause to date than players like gallas and should be afforded some respect for it and I happen to think that his partner last night(kolo) looked woeful in the air which could have caused us problems against a better team.

Good to see Senderos playing well, he needs a confidence boost, I know he is a good if perhaps too little pace a defender when he is on form and he played his part in breaking two defensive records, our CL and at the world cup. Tonight, he seemed far more solid then the rest of his team mates at the back.
We got lucky, the opposition deserved at least a point, we didn't create that much and we were lucky for an offside flag (correct yes but another day, that goes against us) and a shocking miss when clear on goal by one of their players. I would have been happy with a point beforehand and am certainly pleased with three. Hope we can pick up our performance against Sunderland

But you do have a point .. we should have rushed them and cored one or two early goals to take the fight out of them .. Generally, any great team will always be reviewing their performances and be seeking for ways to improve. So, its important not to lose that in the euphoria of a win.
I reckon the backdrop to the performance, was that it was always expected to be a very cautious game (as AW would say, 'played with hand breaks on') mostly due to our poor record in eastern europe, and b/c AW realises the importance of our remaining on a good run until we meet manure and liverpool ...
