MICHAEL OWEN has sealed his sensational move to Manchester United.
The out-of-sorts England striker has signed a two-year deal with the Premier League champions after completing a series of stringent medical tests this evening.
It is believed Owen has joined on a pay-as-you-play deal which will involve a basic weekly wage enhanced by bonuses.
Owen's Newcastle contract expired on July 1 with only Stoke and Hull expressing an interest in the 29-year-old.
But Old Trafford chief Alex Ferguson has made his move, convinced he can revive the former Liverpool star's fortunes.
Fergie said: "Michael is a world-class forward with a proven goalscoring record at the highest level and that has never been in question.
"Coming to Manchester United with the expectations that we have is something that Michael will relish."
Owen revealed he did not hesitate to join the club once Ferguson came calling.
He said: "I had just begun to talk to other clubs when, out of the blue, Sir Alex phoned me on Wednesday afternoon and invited me to have breakfast with him the next morning - during which he told me that he wanted to sign me. I agreed without a moment's thought.
"This is a fantastic opportunity for me and I intend to seize it with both hands.
"I am now looking forward to being a Manchester United player and I am fortunate that I already know so many of the players here.
"I missed pre-season last year and am pleased that I will be starting at Carrington from day one.
"I want to thank Sir Alex for the faith he has shown in me and I give him my assurance that I will repay him with my goals and performances."

Why would we want Owen, we have Eduardo, who doesn't get enough starts as it is, if Eddie was allowed to play as far forward as Owen does he would score just as many goals, plus he is far more capable outside the box than Owen.Mikegooner87i wrote:i was actually talking to a mate of mine about owen a couple of weeks ago! i was saying wenger should take a gamble (as if) on him. A fit Michael Owen will get you more goal then the greedybarndoor will, even if a fit michael owen is ait of a myth....
I think he will come good up there.... and im affraid its another one we missed out on!
Danny WellbeckMan Utd have 2 strikers + Macheda left at the club. It's a slightly different situation from ours.

I read the story on here yesterday minutes after it was posted and was well ahead of the game over here when I told a few manc fans and they were gutted at the news and a scouser fan was equally gutted - was great to see a single piece of news piss off two different sets of fans at the one time
Am not sure what my views of this deal is but I know if we signed him I would have been gutted

I think they all should be on that type of contract, it would certainly make sure they buckled down and put the effort in every week and we would see a lot less of the player egomania we currently do, bring a bit more power back to the managers.donaldo wrote:I wonder if a certain Rosicknote would like a pay as you play contract :finger:

owen is top of premier leagues scoring charts when it come to chances to goals ratio 29%, that basically 1 in every 3 chances he scoresSwale_Gooner1985 wrote:I dont think he is any good, simple as that, another player who has completely declined and people just wont admitt it, he prefers golf now anyway doesnt he?Karel wrote:People may knock it and laugh, but I think this is a shrewd signing. Ok, so he's no Benzema or Ronaldo or Tevez or Aguero etc, but with the chances Utd create, he could do a good job. I hear people say he lacks speed, but Van Nistlerooy wasn't fast either. I reckon Ferguson will manage to get at least 10+ goals out of him next season, to be honest.
I hope they sign him, dont think he will do anything at all
Nistelrooy wasnt slow, i remember him roaring past a couple of our defenders in 2003 and scoring, he was just a player whos game didnt rely on pace, but he did have it if need be, Owen is completely clapped out!

in contrast tevez was 11% thats 1 in 10

cant remember barndoors but think they said 18%
I think we should have given him a go, anyone who says owen is crap is talking out of their ass imo
and i just heard merse saying he is the best finisher in the pl, exactly my opinion for years, suppose merse knows fuck all too

He flew through a stringent medical, doubt eddie or rvp would to be honest.
he will bag 20 goals this season at least imo
Most of us on here will agree with you leftfoot when you say that he is the best finisher around but, and there really is no getting away from this, he is hugely injury prone in the last few seasons and you simply have to take into account the physique of the guy and the amount of milage on the clock plus the hardship he has received. Given that we already have rosicky and a few others that fall into the injury prone grouping then it would have been absolute madness for us to sign him.
Have to say that I also doubt that greedybollix's striker ratio is 18%
I know that it is still less than one goal per 5 chances but looking at him I thought that it was even worse than that

i agree his injuries at newcastle were pretty lengthy but if you had been playing for that pile of crap wouldnt you rather stay at homeaugie wrote:Most of us on here will agree with you leftfoot when you say that he is the best finisher around but, and there really is no getting away from this, he is hugely injury prone in the last few seasons and you simply have to take into account the physique of the guy and the amount of milage on the clock plus the hardship he has received. If and if is a big word but if he can stay fit for the majority of the season i expect him bag a shed load of goals.
and if he was on a pay as you play contract there is very little risk, what we should do is put eddie and rosicky and maybe even rvp on that type of contract.

Edit: yeah i thought that was a bit generous for barndoor too

roonies was crap too, about 12% although at least he puts in a decent shift
