Arsène Wenger in talks with Fiorentina over buying midfielder Felipe Melo

• Emmanuel Eboué has been proposed as a makeweight in deal
• Brazilian could still be too expensive for Arsenal's budget

David Hytner guardian.co.uk, Tuesday 7 July 2009 19.16 BST
Arsène Wenger has opened talks with Fiorentina over the purchase of the midfielder Felipe Melo, and the Arsenal manager has proposed to use Emmanuel Eboué as a makeweight in the deal.

Melo has a release clause of €25m (£21.5m) in his recently signed contract, which Arsenal deem to be too expensive, but Fiorentina are open to player-plus-cash offers and they have indicated that Eboué, who fell from favour at the Emirates last season, is a possible option, although the Ivorian's value of around £4m would still appear to put Melo beyond Arsenal's means.

The Brazil international's release clause, however, does not apply next month, with Fiorentina reasoning that they might be able to generate an auction for his signature the closer that they get to the summer transfer deadline and end up with more than €25m; Juventus are among the other clubs to have registered their interest. But Arsenal hope they might be able to force Fiorentina down next month, as a game of brinkmanship looks set to play out.

"Wenger wants to talk to me," said Pantaleo Corvino, the Fiorentina sporting director. "I have no objection also because Eboué seems a valid swap."

Wenger has already signed the defender Thomas Vermaelen from Ajax for £10m and, given his transfer budget stands at around £15m, he must generate additional funds through sales. He is keen to cash in on the defender Philippe Senderos who, despite his disappointing season-long loan at Milan, has attracted interest from the French champions Bordeaux.

Arsenal have also channelled their energies into tying key players to new deals and the striker Robin van Persie has signed until 2014. The club is preparing to announce the encouraging news, which follows Theo Walcott committing himself towards the end of last season and the young players Kieran Gibbs and Jack Wilshere agreeing new long-term contracts more recently.

"We are embarked on a journey that we believe will result in us having a truly world-class team, winning trophies over the next five years of Arsenal's history," said Ivan Gazidis, the club's chief executive.

I hope we can manage to find the funds or deal to get melo, and then use the money from the dead wood we manage to get rid of, to get better improvements. We currently have 6 center halfs, 5 center midfielders and it looks like we ae chasing another.

'Melo? Speak with Arsenal "
The ds of Fiorentina is the situation of the Brazilian, "I have no appointment scheduled with the Bianconeri, the fact that we have sold Marchionni not mean anything. The player can go to a specific figure, and I know that I want to talk to Wenger "

FLORENCE, 7 July 2009 - No meeting scheduled with Juventus. But the situation Felipe Melo is constantly evolving. So, here's Pantaleo Corvino, ds purple, ready to intervene again. She does it during the presentation of Cesare Natali, neo purchase Fiorentina: "The conditions for the sale of Felipe are always the same: it is necessary that a club is the agreement with the player and then we are willing to give us the figure of rescissoria clause, ie twenty-five million. Meetings scheduled with Juventus? No, there is no appointment required. Also because, until now, no company has submitted to me as specified. Marchionni first step in a supply of Melo in bianconero? No, there has never been offered in these terms. We have an agreement for the ownership, now try the one with the player. "

UNTIL WITHDRAWAL - Here are other details revealed by ds viola, yesterday at dinner in Florence with the manager of the Brazilian, Rodri Baster: "The clause Felipe Melo, like the others that will be included, will have value until the day in which the player join the team. In the case of Melo until 28 July when it expected its arrival in retreat. If you are bothered by his attitude? No, he knows that he can leave. I put in his head: Fiorentina, economically, is not a top club. If the bid will be important but I expect that from me to tell me. " Other details: Here comes the Juve scene. Log in and hand Arsenal Corvino added: "Wenger I want to talk. I have not foreclosed, but I like Eboue in the chat may be other situations out of interesting techniques. And speaking counterparts to repeat that must be to the liking of Fiorentina. It is also another thing: all that enters through the supply will be entirely reinvested in the market. Melo goes away if we take another player from the similar characteristics. "

COME 'N GOK ME

7th July 2009 By Tim Gray

[quote]SWISS international Gokhan Inler last night urged Liverpool and Arsenal to battle for his signature.

Anfield boss Rafa Benitez has earmarked the Udinese midfielder as a replacement if he loses either Real Madrid target Xabi Alonso or Javier Mascherano, who is wanted by Barcelona.

And rival manager Arsene Wenger, who has long been on the trail of the 25-year-old, wants him at the Emirates.

Udinese rate Inler at £15m, but will accept a compromise deal – with the player keen to quit the modest Serie A club.

Inler said: “They play very good football in England as well as in Serie A.â€

Marchionni wrecks Melo move?

Wednesday 8 July, 2009

[quote]There are shock reports that Marco Marchionni could wreck Felipe Melo’s proposed move to Juventus, letting Arsenal back in.

The Bianconeri reached a deal last night to hand over Marchionni plus cash for a total £21m to bring in Melo from Fiorentina.

According to violanews.com this evening, the move has hit a major obstacle, as Marchionni is unhappy with the contract he has been offered.

“Unfortunately we won’t be doing anything,â€

Report: Arsenal Close In On St. Etienne's Matuidi

Arsene Wenger has reportedly held talks with Blaise Matuidi, and is ready to wrap up a deal...
Arsenal are close to wrapping up the signature of Blaise Matuidi.

The 22-year-old French midfielder is ready to leave St. Etienne, and recently expressed his admiration for Arsenal's style of play.

Now, according to The Mirror, The Gunners are closing in on a deal, with Arsene Wenger having held talks with Matuidi yesterday. It is believed that he will cost in the region of £2.5million.

Matuidi has also attracted the interest of Tottenham and Everton, but he has made it clear that Arsenal is his first choice.

That will not be the end of Wenger's midfield signings, however, as he weighs up a move for Udinese's Gokhan Inler.

Sky News reported on Tuesday night that Matuidi was in London for talks with Wenger. He is a typical Wenger signing so I would believe this story has some legs.

Melo story is more smoke and mirrors I'm afraid.

BORING........ :goingtobed:

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sp ... b-bid.html

BARCELONA will launch a £40million bid for Arsenal star Cesc Fabregas — but only if they offload Samuel Eto'o to Manchester City.
Reports in Spain suggest the European champions are willing to sell the Cameroon hitman for £25m.
However, the three-time African Player of the Year is reluctant to join Mark Hughes' Eastlands revolution unless they make him the highest-paid player in the world.
But if Barca succeed in selling the striker it could pave the way for a mega offer for Gunners captain Fabregas.
The Spaniards have long been linked with a move for the 22-year-old, who left them to join Arsenal in 2003.
Earlier this summer, Fabregas admitted he was disappointed with Arsenal's failure to win any silverware since their 2005 FA Cup triumph over Manchester United.
And now, Barca's vice-president Jaume Ferrer has claimed the Spanish Treble winners could offer him an escape route out of North London.
Ferrer said: "We are confident we can land someone we want and everybody knows what players we are after.
"They have been constantly mentioned in the media."
Barcelona could include Ivory Coast international midfielder Yaya Toure as a makeweight in any potential offer for Fabregas.

Incredibly though the Sun speculated the Ross Turnball move to Chelsea. They mentioned it 3 or 4 weeks before the deal actually went through but i thought that was nonsense at the time of reading but actually they got it right...
...still think that transfer is up there with Owen to Man U cos what are Chelsea, who want to win the Champions League for the first time and looking to bring in the likes of Ribery etc doing buying a middlesbrough substitute goalie!!!???
