Historical facts

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Historical facts

Post by Chippy »

Reading all the stuff on here, as well as reminding me what an old fart I am, has also made me realise how much I have forgotten. EG My first game was Ipswich at Highbury in 69. It was total crap. Anybody know where I can find out who was playing? Got loads of questions like that but can't seem to find a site with all the data.
have I missed it on the official site?

I checked every site i could find,all i got was the reult 0 0.

Plenty about Arsenal and Swindon, league cup final, one of the darkest days in our history
What i found amazing was the squad photo, only 16 players and 2 of them were goalies, there was no fatigue in them days or a rotation policy.

A lot of bad days far outweighed by the large amount of great days

I remember 0-0. the squads were unbelievable in those days. Have you not seen Frank McClintock boring on about how we won the double in 71 with 13 players.

We won the league, we won the leagiue at *hite hart lane....

As for losing to Ipswich in 78 at least we beat the Mancs the following year. I nearly died as i lived in Manchester at the time and went out on the lash that night. Could i keep my gob shut????

I am still amazed that there is nowhere on the internet with all the results teams etc

It's amazing what you can find in the magnificent (earlier) editions of Arsenal FC The Official History!

Oh, I've got much much more than you can find in there!

At the moment I am cropping and re-sizing my 1914-15 handbook that I scanned in this afternoon.

Now that really is impressive. Respect where it is due. I thought I was doing well with my copy of Forward Arsenal by Bernard Joy!

With the help of the book "Arsenal A Complete Record 1886-1988 by Fred Ollier and not from my memory  the team was 1, Geoff Barnett, 2, Peter Storey, 3, Sammy Nelson (fuck, he must have been young then), 4, Frank Mclintock, 5, Terry Neill, 6, Peter Simpson, 7, Jimmy Robertson, 8, Jon Sammels, 9, Bobby Gould, 10, George Graham, 11, John Radford. It was played at Highbury in front of a massive 22,458 crowd on 25th October 1969. This game holds no memories for me whatsoever but I remember the following saturday very well, we beat Palace away
5-1 and George Graham scored the ITV Big Match goal of the season with a diving header
PS. I only know it was the following saturday coz it says so in the book, honest

God I love you guys............. Not in a Cashley sense you understand, my mobile is quite old and therefore large!

So it was pretty much the double winning team. How come they were so crap? The 71 season was my first as a proper Gooner and my memories are of a resilient team that could still play some football (George Graham could pass the ball, ironic really).

Goonerak, why don't you find some way to share all this stuff with us. perhaps as an add on to the Gooner? it should be accessible on the internets (TM G W Bush).

Pretty much the double winning side, minus Neill, Gould and Robertson but don't forget we actually won the Fairs Cup that season (69/70) which paved the way for our double a year later.
