The western powers, mainly the USA and UK secret services were instrumental in seeking out stirred up muslim fanatics, co-ordinating them, funding them and training them because it fitted well with their cold war aims at the time.
There was a progressive government in Afghanistan in the late 70s, which based it's principles on post-enlightenment western ideals and toward secularism and away from the religious fanatics. Though we decided to back the Taliban.

The sad and depressing fact is that, however disgraceful the Taliban are with their lack of freedoms, their religious intolerance, their disgraceful treatment of women and their lack of rights, despite all of that if the Taleban had:
(a) 100% control over Afghanistan from regional rival warlords, and
(b) were agreeable to US/western aims with the resources of the Caspian Sea there would be no war and Afghanistan, like the human rights abusing regimes of Nigeria and Saudi Arabia would be an ally of the US/UK and hence no long drawn out conflict.
This is a Wall Street war and the perpetrators will fight to the very last breath in someone else's body.
